Jeremy Nygaard Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 We've reached the halfway point of the 2022 MLB Draft, which will conclude with 10 more rounds later this afternoon. The draft will resume at 1:00 pm this afternoon and figures to be all wrapped up between 4:00 and 5:00. After starting off at a snail's pace on Sunday night, Day 2 moved significantly faster. Here's to hoping for more of the same tomorrow. One big change in draft coverage at Twins Daily this year is the introduction of the Twins Draft Tracker. If you feel like there's less draft coverage on the front page and in the forums from Twins Daily staff, it's because you're right. The length of Day 1 provided us some time to do other things (like record a video or push out an article after a pick), but the swiftness of the rest of the draft keeps most of the activity over in the Tracker. That's where new scouting information and signing information will go. It's a neat feature that Brock put together if you haven't checked it out. Round 11: Andrew Cossetti, C, St. Joseph's Round 12: Nate Baez, C, Arizona State Round 13: C.J. Culpepper, RHP, Cal Baptist Round 14: Omari Daniel, SS, The Walker School (GA) Round 15: Ben Ethridge, RHP, Southern Mississippi Round 16: Jankel Ortiz, SS, Academia Presbiteriana HS (PR) Round 17: Alec Sayre, OF, Wright State Round 18: Zachary Veen, LHP, Point Loma Nazarene Round 19: Garrett McMillan, RHP, Alabama Round 20: Korbyn Dickerson, OF, Trinity HS (KY) Of course, keep the conversation going in the comments below. It was fun to read through the comments as I was able yesterday and try to interject as much as I could. I hope to do the same tomorrow. Here again is the quick recap of the first ten rounds with bonus information. Player Round Slot Brooks Lee, SS, Cal Poly 1 $5,439,500 Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama 2 $1,621,900 Tanner Schobel, SS, Virginia Tech CB $1,001,500 Andrew Morris, RHP, Texas Tech 4 $533,100 Ben Ross, SS, Notre Dame Coll. 5 $398,200 Jorel Ortega, SS, Tennessee 6 $301,000 Kyle Jones, RHP, Toledo 7 $235,400 Zebby Matthews, RHP, W. Carolina 8 $187,700 Cory Lewis, RHP, UC-Santa Barbara 9 $164,000 Dalton Shuffield, SS, Texas State 10 $153,700 What did you think of Day 2 now that the dust settled? What do you want to see later today? Shots on guys who might have higher price tags? All pitchers? All catchers!? View full article
Dman Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Honestly I am not expecting much from day three. If the Twins can find some more guys like last year: Fedko, Festa, Nowlin, Parades, Perez and Ohl then that would be pretty darn good. If I had my wish it would be to find some younger guys at the high school level or JC and develop them in the system. They get a chance to mold them that way and they have the equipment to help them develop faster IMO. Still finding a few guys that might make difference in those rounds would be good enough for me. We all know that unfortunately about 90% of these picks are not going to make it. Some will get very, very close and more than half will wipe out fairly early. It is a hard long road to become the best of the best and then get privilege of playing Major league Baseball. I hope they all make it but will be happy to get two or three good player out of this draft. Karbo, prouster, IndyTwinsFan and 3 others 6
Bctwinsfan Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Very interested in seeing the bonus $ the top 2 picks require to sign. We either had to save a bunch of money for them, or we're going to make a splash today. Either way, I love the approach and draft so far. Karbo, operation mindcrime, Dman and 2 others 5
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Yeah, we're kind of in the dark here since we don't know if the Twins needed to save all the money for the top of their draft, or if they saved money for today. I'd imagine we'll know after the next pick. chpettit19, Karbo and Dman 3
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Agree the draft ultimately comes down to the first couple of picks, and with that in mind, I doubt anyone selected on day 2...or the impending day 3....has been or will be selected for much of an over-sign. But let's not forget day 2 the past 4 years, (can't really count 2020 draft), has brought in Sands, Winder, Gipson-Long, Hebdrick, Holland, Encarnacion-Strand, just to name a few. Day 3 has brought in Ober, Helman, Mooney, Julien, Isola, and Festa. Again, just to name a few. Hard to believe that Isola, probably the top catching prospect at the moment, was selected in a round that doesn't even exist any longer. So even day 3 can be very important. It's not like the Twins are just drawing names out of a hat to just take their turn and move on. I think you'll see college seniors, smaller school kids with athletic talent that just didn't attend a major conference for whatever reason, and very likely a couple guys who's last year was hurt or wiped out due to injury. nicksaviking, chpettit19, wabene and 3 others 6
SGL Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Are there any decent players left that the Twins could draft and sign with higher bonuses
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 6 minutes ago, SGL said: Are there any decent players left that the Twins could draft and sign with higher bonuses Well there are still plenty of 'ranked' prep players but most of them wouldn't take any reasonable bonus at this point; college is their landing spot with the hope of getting the big bucks in a couple of years. Most will probably still get drafted just in case they change their minds, and some even may sign, but that seems to be knowledge that's kept between the teams and the players themselves. James Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 I just hope that the Twins get their guy. HrbieFan 1
Ryan_K Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 I think we take a prep player in 11. We saved money on day 2, two sign our top two of one of them doesn't sign then while we lose that bonus money we can take our day 2 savings and use it for prep player.

Musk21 Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 We got a catcher! Andrew Cossetti - St. Joseph's (PA) Karbo 1
Dman Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 And we all can be happy as they finally picked a catcher. Another player with a good eye at the plate and good power. Looks like a smaller school though. Still I like the hitters they have been selecting. They all seem to have a good eye to start with so that should help them early on. Just not sure how well those small school players translate though. bunsen82, wabene and DocBauer 3
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Awesome looking numbers too! Put him on the 26-man! https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=cosset000and bunsen82, Dman, wabene and 1 other 3 1

2wins87 Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Senior sign, so it seems they are still in the mode of taking guys they definitely expect to sign. I do think it's pretty likely that at some point they will take someone who will likely demand above slot, maybe a couple hundred thousand dollars. Jaylen Nowlin was sort of that guy last year in the 19th round out of Junior College. I think the money saved yesterday was pretty much just to sign their top two picks, but it makes sense to take a shot at one or two slightly tougher signs on day 3 in case they do end up with a little extra money saved up. Dman Verified Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 The Twins doubling down on catchers. When are they gonna pick some toolsy outfielders? Baez looks like a good pick here as well. Has some power but might need some work on the eye at the plate. Still a very nice pick at 12 if you ask me. Keep'em coming Draft team.
