Let’s Remember Some Guys: Twins Players with Short Stints

There’s a thread on the Baseball Reddit going on about players who played short stints with teams. Ken Griffey Jr. in a White Sox uniform started things off. There’s nothing to talk about right now, so let’s remember some guys! I’ll kick things off with Twins legend Sidney Ponson.

Matt Fox was called up for a spot start in September 2010, tossing 5.2 scoreless inning getting a no decision in a win. DFA'd the following day and claimed by the Red Sox.

Shades of Drew Maggi, and Tomas Tellis. Chuck Schilling was the first of five players before this season that made the roster but never played a game for the Twins.

By the start of the 1966 campaign, Chuck Schilling had become a utility player for the Boston Red Sox. During spring training, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins with catcher Russ Nixon for left-handed pitcher Dick Stigman. Schilling began the season on the Twins' 28-man roster, but never played a game for manager Sam Mele and retired just before the rosters were cut to 25 on May 15 rather than accept a minor league assignment.

We're doing Spring Training too?  Okay, how about this:

I'd say Anibal Sanchez qualifies as a short stint.

Twins legend with 1 GS. I’m amazed there is a pic of him in a Twins uniform.

Fast shutter speed was necessary before he donned his Yankees uni.

Is that a catcher's mitt or an umpire's balloon chest protector he's holding there?  He must have given up a ton of stolen bases - first you have to find the ball somewhere in there, then patiently dig it out.

Same type, or same glove, Earl Battey used to get a Golden Glove in 1962.

Rick Dempsey. Played 41 games in a Twins uniform 1969-72. Obviously just a fringe prospect he was traded to the Yankees for the immortal Danny Walton. Of course Mr. Dempsey went on to have a 4-decade 24 season career and anchored the Baltimore Orioles pitching staff for over 10 years. Played 1633 games at catcher, good for 21st all-time. Batted .303 in 3 postseasons and won the World Series MVP in 1983 for the Orioles. Was also the best rain-delay entertainer to don pin stripes.

ALEJANDRO MACHADO, listed in the Twins Media Guide as a player for the 2007 season. He was picked up in the Rule 5 draft, got injured and staued on the in jured list all season. He started 2008 in the minors and the Twins must have offered him back, because he managed to stay a Twin (in the minors) for 2008/2009. Never made it to the majors again.

He appeared in the most MLB games ever for a pitcher.

The last 8 in a Twins uniform.

Yikes.

Bad as he was with the Twins (5.79 ERA in 4.2 innings over eight games), his career was even less illustrious in his preceding stint with the Yankees, where he served as a LLTOOGY (Lefty Less-Than One Out Guy) with 4.1 innings over 15 games.

FREE Anthony Slama!

Had some pretty good minor league #'s, but only appeared in 7 games for the Twins over the 2010-2011 seasons.

On August 29th, 1984, the upstart Minnesota Twins held a 3 game lead in the AL West division. In a bid to shore up their bench, the Twins traded a PTBNL to the Seattle Mariners for 30 year old PH/DH/1B Pat Putnam, who had a paltry .532 OPS for the Mariners.

Well, Putnam's OPS in 43 AB's was almost half that for the Twins (.268!).  As we all know, the Twins proceeded to lose the division to Cleveland and Jamie Quirk.

Chris Speier.  The F.O. pulled off the trade to bring in a veteran at the trade deadline in 1984 to help a young, overachieving team.  Unfortunately bad heel limited him to just 12 games.
