rico7961 Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 IF the Twins make one trade for pitching, which would you rather have it be. Trade Rosario and whatever prospects it takes for a SP along the lines of Robbie Ray, Matthew Boyd, Chris Archer, Caleb Smith, David Price, or Chris Sale. Or trade whatever package necessary to aquire Josh Hader. Either supplementing our rotation, or going the route of making a very DEEP and talented bullpen. Which way would you go? Either way still leaves some question marks, but really enhances the team and pitching staff also. If you follow MLB, any trade like this MIGHT be possible with the right package. And the Twins undeniably have what it takes to GET it done. So are they willing?
Whammy Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Why would a team willing to trade a front line starter want an expensive outfielder with 2 years of team control left. The only exception might be the Red Sox, but I feel like the Sale and Price ship has ummmm.... sailed, with the big money signing of Donaldson. Probably going to have to be a pitcher who’s making less than $10M
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I'd rather have a starter but the Twins might not agree.
bighat Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I don't think Eddie's going to be included in any deals. Someone posted on TD a while back about Rosie and made a good point: 1. Teams who think they can compete this year aren't going to give up any front line starters2. Teams who are rebuilding have zero incentive or need for a guy like Eddie Eddie is a guy who hits 30+ home runs per year and has basically zero trade value. His highest value as a player is sticking right where he is, like it or not. If the Twins get a front-line starter (ie: Jon Gray), they're giving up Larnach, Kiriloff, or Lewis - or maybe 2 of those 3 guys. Personally, I'd like to see the Twins find a way to get Gray, as his numbers in mile-high Colorado aren't bad and they'd likely improve outside of Denver.
dex8425 Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Most of those teams are not going to want Rosario/Cave. Brewers certainly don't; they have Braun, Avisail Garcia, Lorenzo Cain and some guy named Yelich there already. I don't want the Twins to give up a lot of prospect capital to get Hader. He was bad half of last season. We would need to give up a lot to get him. I'm not worried about the bullpen. I'm intrigued most by Sale or Price but I doubt the Red Sox will sell either of them now, and probably not at the deadline either.
RaoulDuke Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Rosario isn't going to bring back more than a 5th starter. I think if they are going to spend prospects (and they should) it needs to be for a starter. I do think Arraez may be the most appealing piece to trade if possible, considering his redundancy with Polanco.
Cap'n Piranha Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 All things being equal, the rotation is where the trade capital should be spent. Our bullpen is already in pretty decent shape with Rogers, Duffey, May, Romo, Clippard, and Littell, which doesn't even account for Stashak, Graterol, Duran, or Alcala (should any of the latter 3 be converted exclusively to relievers). Berrios/Odo/Bailey+Pineda/Hill when available, filled in by Thorpe, Smeltzer, and Dobnak should be enough to get through the regular season, but a guy who makes Odo your game 3 starter (and possibly Berrios the game 2 starter) would be huge for this team. I also concur on the Rosario logic--the only team I can see actually wanting him is the Fightin' Gardy's, and even that is a long shot. Offloading Rosario would probably require taking a bad contract back, so what's really the point? Plus, since Rosario seems to be very popular in the clubhouse, I'd leave him alone, and hope he had an epiphany about his current career trajectory in the offseason.

Dman Verified Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Most teams aren't looking to unload [pitching in the off-season unless they get a huge overpay. As others suggested Rosario probably doesn't fit well for most teams. The Marlins seem to be the only ones interested in him probably because Rowson knows what Eddie can bring but I am not sure the Marlins have what we need to move the needle on starting pitching. The other thing is I think Rosario provides more value to the Twins than any other team. While i am not as high on Rosario as some I still think he is an important part of this team this year. I still want to see if he can control that swing and take some walks. He is a wild card up there so pitchers have to be careful. If Kirilloff or Larnach look ready then maybe they do something with Eddie next year. If Eddie has an All_Star year then let's ride with him next year as well. I think keeping makes the most sense right now.

Jon Gray is my 1st choice too but Colorado won`t let him go because they still think they have a shot at a wild card hopefully near the dead line. Robbie Ray is a good choice, Arizona has an abundance of starting pitching but they still might want to keep him until dead line. I don`t think Detroit will let Boyd go cheap if at all. I think Archer is our best shot, I think he`d thrive here in MN, & he should come reasonable even though his stock has double since Christmas. A lot of teams are looking for catching, we might have to give up a catching prospect if other than Archer. We could have chance at Chris Sales if Boston would pay down his salary

We trade Rosario and "whatever prospects" for a one year rental? No thanks. I am not particularly impressed with Matthew Boyd. It's not like he's got a history of success. He isn't the "impact pitching" so many here are chittering about. Pretty ordinary guy with not a lot of durability. Chris Archer has been freakin pedestrian for a while. He's turning 31 and he isn't already losing steam. Caleb Smith? Eh? No thank you on David Price. If our goal is to get past the Yankees in the playoffs one day then no way in the world should we sign him. His numbers against the Yankees are BRUTAL. He is going to be 34 this year. He tossed just over 100 innings last year. He is in decline. Chris Sale? He had his worst year last season. He had an elbow injury. No. I give you points for trying but there isn't a starter you mentioned there that I would want. If we are trading for a pitcher we ought to go big. We tried last year with Sndergaard, but the Twins inexplicably balked when the Mets inquired about Buxton. I would have done that deal in a NY minute
Twodogs Verified Member Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Trade Donaldson for Ryu.Honestly, I'd rather have Donaldson a guy who is an everyday player vs a guy who goes once a week.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Why not do both, but with prospects, instead of getting rid of the guy who let them in WAR in 2019, and can be a positive contributor for 2020. Why open a hole to close another? The other thing I would do, is looking for 2021 and try to convert Hader back to a starter after this season, as he was in the minors,
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 I won't speculate on who the Twins should offer. However... to answer your question. The Twins would have to change course to maximize the value of Hader. The Brewers are not your traditional 5 starter rotation ball club. They created Hader to fill those gaps created by not being a traditional 5 starter rotation. Unless... the Twins are going to tailor the game plan to what Hader does, it would be better to trade for someone who will fit into what they do. Go for the starter.

tony&rodney Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 The Red Sox would give Price away. The Twins would never pay $32 million per year for him. The cost in any prospects to reduce costs doesn't help Boston unless they get rid of a large part of the contract. It's a Catch-22.Sale has been hurt and his injury removes any interest the Twins have with his contract, plus the cost of prospects would be high.Buehler, Castillo, Paddock, Snell and other really good pitchers are not available. Thor - not available now. Teams that are intent on entering the season with any idea to be competitive for the postseason are not trading good pitching. No Ray or Minor. Maybe later. This brings us to Gray and Colorado. The Rockies missed the playoffs last year but were in the postseason the two prior years. I think they want to get back to October this year. It is possible they might listen, and many on TD have raised a cacophony about Polanco and shortstop. So what would it take? The Rockies would want at least one pitcher to put on their current team and an every day player. They are not interested in matching contracts, so forget Rosario. The will also want prospects, especially a catcher and pitchers. Off the top of my head: Thorpe, Arraez, Graterol, Balazovic, Jeffers, and maybe Javier. We get Story and Gray. Does that come close, according to value simulations? I have no idea. This would be a blockbuster. Are the Twins better with this trade? What would we want for Berrios and Kepler or Berrios and Polanco?I'm hoping some surprise trade occurs but not thinking or waiting for anything to happens now. Patience.
Twodogs Verified Member Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 I think the only thing the Twins realistically would or could do would be to bring in Tajuan Walker on a one year deal. Wood went to the Dodgers for 4 mill, so something like that. Just to add depth and then roll with the best 5 until the deadline and then maybe go and get someone. If he avoids blisters Hill could be real good in October. He has proven to be lights out before. So they are going to roll with what they have while they develop Grateral, Balazovich, etc... I think they are looking at these guys as our Bieber's and Cleveinger's, etc.... Hope it works out.

ChrisKnutson Verified Member Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I’m guessing the FO finishes off the offseason by signing or trading for another mediocre starter with some upside (Elieser Hernandez or Andrew Cashner). However, I wouldn’t be disappointed because I’m also anticipating the FO to finally unload some of team’s high end prospects for a frontline starter and a shutdown reliever at next year’s deadline (Archer, Giles, Doolittle, Gray, etc). Furthermore, I expect this new trend to continue for atleast another 3 seasons.
