Donaldson contract discussion - 4/100? 4/110?

Perfectly timed leak. The Nationals have sent that message with their acquisitions. The Twins are reportedly moving on. It might be in Donaldson’s interest to take the best current offer before he only has the Braves left and loses his leverage.

Going by past history, they are likely not the high bidder. In fact, with what has gone on all offseason, I’d venture to guess they are the lowest of all 4 year bids.

 

It’s fine for this one IMO. But this sets the stage for the mass exodus once our boys are ready to get paid. Don’t think for one minute they can’t see what’s going on.

Strib is reporting that the Twins think Donaldson has no interest in playing for them and they are now moving on. Just a wonderful off-season.

He always wanted to sign with Atlanta so I figured it would be hard to get him.  We aren't a team that tends to overpay anyway.  I never thought 4 years was a good idea either.  Three seemed like a decent deal four seemed like a likely waste but who knows maybe he is one of those guys that does well till the end.

 

The odd thing is he really seems to be putting the screws to the Braves.  I mean if their contract is similar to what Washington has on the table and he isn't taking it that says something.  If I was Atlanta I would let him go. They might be better off in the end anyway.

Actually the article said the Twins’ pursuit of Donaldson was a reaction to its failure to sign a pitcher. Meaning their interest in Donaldson was recent, I guess.

Not that recent. It's been at least a few weeks. It's absurd to only now say "he has NO interest in playing for us."

I always figured he would use us to get Atlanta as high as possible and then take their offer. But in that case, we shouldn't have waited around. I get the feeling Falvine calculate what they think is a "fair" offer, make it and then just wait around on someone to accept it. Hence their being "shocked" about the Stroman trade, and every pitcher going elsewhere.

Thing is they have now been wasting time waiting around for all these guys to take what they feel is their “fair” offer. Work on trades and forget about it. Do they not realize players won’t come here on a discount? Too many years of cheapness even if their offer is fair or market value the damage has already been done. One way to get a free agent you want here. Blow their doors off with more money than everyone else. Either do that or just stay away and quit wasting your time and getting people worked up.

 

I shouldn’t even ask for trades anymore either. It’s the same thing. Won’t give up anyone of value, shot in the dark token offers.

One thing I will say in their favor—at some point you gotta just move on. I don’t know if this was that time for Donaldson or not, because he was not one of my top wishes. But generally I think the team should be set in late January around the time Twins Fest starts, late January, or spring training at latest (unless a nice trade is made, like Odorizzi a couple years ago, or if some other opportunity presents itself).

Piecing together a few things that have been reported or that we think we know:

 

1. The Twins have made Donaldson a four-year offer.

2. Donaldson played in Atlanta last year, enjoyed his time there, is from the south, and wanted to give Atlanta a chance to field a competitive offer after he tested the market.

3. The third main suitor, the Nats, have moved on, signing several other infielders and relievers, using up roster spots and resources they were saving for Donaldson.

4. Atlanta has now made a four year deal.

5. AFTER reviewing the received four-year deals, Donaldson has indicated that 4/110 would be a contract offer that would get it done.

6. Twins front office staff, who have indicated they have made a competitive / the highest offer, are commenting that Donaldson doesn’t want to sign with Minnesota.

7. Atlanta is currently $7mm over their highest opening day payroll ever.

8. He hasn’t signed yet.

 

From all of this, it seems clear that the Twins have an offer (4/95?) that is the top offer, and decently more than the Braves’ offer (4/80?), yet a fair amount less than 4/110. But since he hasn’t accepted their offer, the Twins are frustrated he won’t just sign with them already. They could raise their offer, but they’d be bidding against themselves.

 

My point is that this is still a fluid situation. Donaldson could relent and take the Twins’ offer. The Braves could increase their offer to the acceptable range. Another team could swoop in. Or the Twins could relent and add a bit to their offer (4/100, 4/104?), which would give Donaldson cover to say “I was interested in staying in Atlanta, but Minnesota made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

 

If those four outcomes, the Twins sign Donaldson is two of them. This isn’t over.

I don't even think I care so much if he signs with Atlanta. Just either take the better offer, Washington or Minnesota's. Or sign with where you actually want to be and be done with it. 

 

Been stringing all 3 teams along for coming up on a month. I'm all for a guy getting every dollar he can, for the location you want to be, but c'mon man.

I honestly don't really care if the Twins get him. But if they are truly offereing 100 mill(for the record, I don't believe they are), and you really want him here? Then just up it to 110 and get him signed. Make him turn you down at the price he has said he will sign for. 

 

My guess is that the offers are a fair amount below 100 million. Why else would that 110 number be a big deal to him? Unless, as has been speculated, the Twins and Nats are around 100 and the Braves are sitting there around 80-85 and he really wants back in Atlanta.
