The Minnesota Twins announced the signing of infielder Ronald Torreyes to a Major League contract. Jon Heyman has reported that the deal is believed to be for about $800,000.

 

The former Yankees and Dodgers utility man puts the Twins at 39 on their 40-man roster.Torreyes is a 26-year-old from Venezuela who spent most of the last three seasons with the New York Yankees. The utility infielder is diminutive in stature, but he has a good glove around the infield.

 

Torreyes spent eight games with the Dodgers in 2015.

 

In late November, the Yankees DFAd Ronald Torreyes, and two days later, they traded him to the Cubs for cash or a PTBNL. They DFAd him two days later.

 

With Ken Rosenthal reporting that the Twins are working on a one-year $7 million deal with Jonathan Schoop, Torreyes will likely compete with Ehire Adrianza for utility infield time around the field.

 

In 229 career games, Torreyes has hit .281 with 30 doubles, six triples and four home runs.

 

Quick Update from Dan Hayes. The fact that it is a split-contract and he has a minor league option remaining makes it make a lot more sense.

I don't understand signing Torres to a major league contract.

I had hoped to have some really meaty transactions to mull over for the Twins this year, but Cron, Schoop, and Torreyes have not moved the meter.  I wish them all luck, but I wonder how much has Cron improved us over Austin?  How much better is Torreyes than Adrianza?  Is Schoop the player we need?  Schoop's fielding is replacement level according to what I saw on Baseball Reference, his hitting is not.  Now we will continue to have Polanco at SS which is certainly not the best fielding situation.  How strong are we in the middle with these two playing there?  

 

So far we are filling the roster, but have we improved?  How many wins will these player give us?

But it does show that the Twins aren't going after the big-big money players, and if I must say, still looking hard at what they do have. Be interesting to see the arbitration settlements with the likes of Sano and Buxton and if they do extend Berrios and Rosario.

 

Yes, they can still add a bullpen arm.

 

They might pull off a trade.

 

I hate to see them just jettison players from the current 40-man with nothing received in return. But we will see.

 

Hope they don't see the need for a Rule 5, especially a bullpen arm.

I will have to research him more before I can make a fair assessment. But he provides seeming depth and competition. That's a good thing. And we also need that depth at Rochester.

Seems like a good deal to me. Last year we had zero depth at AAA when it came to infielders, now they have another body there who should hit better than Motter and Petit. He's got a high batting average but an awful OBP, this dude never walks. He ranked 32nd out of 82 guys who played at least 100 innings at 2B according to UZR. DRS has him 21st/82. So he's good defensively, mediocre bat, only 26 years old...  I'd just rather keep him at AAA, but we'll probably need him at some point due to injuries.

You do have an open spot on the 40-man roster.  He is not on it.   After he was DFA'd he became a free agent and signed a minor league contract

Wrong. He's on the 40 man, it's a split major league contract, meaning he'll make less money during the time he's in the minors than he will during the time he's in the majors.

It doesn't show anything... These are individual moves and doesn't stop the Twins from doing more moves. I'm not saying they will do a ton more, but they will certainly do more.

He could compete with Adrianza for a utility infield job in 2019, and if he wins, Adrianza's contract isn't guaranteed. Also, one more year of Adrianza as a utility guy might make him a $2 million guy, in which case they can non-tender him and Torreyes does the same job in 2020 or $1.2 million instead. Also, Torreyes has hit a bit in the big leagues too, so there's certainly some talent there.

He's listed on the 40 man at the team's site, and I count 40 guys on there. Did you forget to subtract Grossman?

Signing Torreyes with Adrianza on the roster suddenly makes me feel a little better about Cron and Austin on the roster. 

 

My guess is that the boys are acquiring talent and setting up options. Nothing is in stone.

it shows that the Twins have made moves to fill out the infield. There’s still more work to be done, hopefully 2-3 pitchers and maybe an outfielder with a big stick

We now have 19 batters and only 21 pitchers on the roster. I found it so strange the past year or two running with 24 or 25 arms and barely enough bats for just the 25-man roster.

Like I said on another thread, they need to have players that are MLB capable on their roster with options available so they can move them on and off the roster as they need to adjust the size of their bullpen throughout the year. The same thing applies to some of the bottom options in the bullpen.

By no means a big bat, but decent milb BA and OB with a few SB tossed in. And yes, he has actually hit some at the ML level. Reminds me a little bit of picking up Adrianza on the cheap. With Gordon, Arraez and Schales, provides some depth. Not excited, but OK with the move.

 

Fully expecting further moves, either FA or trades, and the 40 man to still be in flux the next couple of months. (Duh, right?). But I'm wondering if this doesn't turn out to be a 40 man removal at some point and a milb signing.

Austudillo's a nice story.  But if you're counting on him you might as well pencil in another 90 loss season.
