Mike Berardino Moving On

One of the better beat reporters for the Twins. Gonna miss him.

Too bad.  Both in terms of getting facts out and developing the personal and emotional aspects of a story, he was the team's best beat writer in my memory.

After Lou Holtz did good things with the Gophers and moved on to Notre Dame, so will Berardino.

In addition to that delicate positive/negative balance, he also seemed pretty adept at working about the right amount of stat-based material into his writing, keeping the eyes of the casual part of his audience from glazing over but not giving it a dumbed down vibe for Fangraphs weirdos like me.

 

Wish him well in his new endeavor. Despite his destination.

The Star Trib group leaves much to be desired in this regard. LEN 3 is very comfortable in his role with the team, and won't challenge authority. Phil Miller is just a guy. Never read or heard anything remotely controversial from him before.

I suppose that might depend on who you ask. You might get a slightly less favorable opinion from people who are no longer there, including four sports writers who left for greener pastures within a month of each other, although that was awhile back and local management may have overcome Gannett and righted the ship somewhat.

The Pioneer Press has its own issues, but whether one or the other paper is of higher journalistic quality might be tough to argue either way. Like asking which of the cat lady's cats is more obedient.

 

Congrats, Mr. Bernardino. Steer clear of the kool-aide in South Bend.
