I’ve been noticing a lot of players wearing the extended “jaw protector” flap on the batting helmets. Used to be that only guys with an injury there used them.

Is that going to be the new normal?

That would be nice and long overdue, as are pitcher helmets

Injuries have hurt, but that can't explain all of it.

I think back to 1997. After 1996, there was a ton of optimism in Twins country. Cordova had built on his ROY with a 111 RBI in 1996. Becker broke out hitting between Knoblauch and Molitor. Stahoviak looked primed to break out. Todd Walker was the trendy preseason ROY pick. Improvement was expected from Frankie Rodriguez and Rich Robertson. Aggie was back to the closer role after starting in 1996.

 

It was a disaster from day one. Stahoviak got hurt stealing a base (of all things) and literally none of the up and comers showed progess other than Radke.

 

Tom Kelly famously said “I guess we overated some people”.

 

IMO, that is exactly the case in 2018.

I just finished a trial where hunters were very interested in the outcome. A bunch of them came to court in camouflage every day (10 days), and they were easy to spot.
