Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 I think the Twins need to be prepared to offer that sixth year, if that's what is needed. The team will look so different by then that Darvishes last couple years will be an after thought (hopefully). It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

My personal threshold was 5/$140m before considering six years and it seems we’re not even close to that number.

Might even work better for Darvish to get to free agency sooner?
twinssporto Verified Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 At this point I’ve lost interest in how it ends up. I once asked a girl in high school to a "formal" dance. I got turned down....If Twins don't land Mr. Darvish I'll take the blame "again". Get it? Thread Title: Twins give Darvish a formal offer. I thought this was funny...
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 Given the numbers that are being thrown around, I’d stick to five years and increase the money. My personal threshold was 5/$140m before considering six years and it seems we’re not even close to that number.Yeah, I'd do that as well. I know it's not 'my money' but I would rather overpay for Darvish and NOT lock in the next Blackburn, Hughes etc long term if that makes sense.I want to see this team go for it for once. The Wolves got aggressive finally and they are fun to watch. It looks like the Vikings are going to go aggressive and will continue to be fun to watch. The Wild have been super super super aggressive, unfortunately they blow it in the playoffs every year, but you know what? Hell, at least it keeps things fun throughout the season all year long. The Twins are the one team of all of those without a cap, go get Darvish and give us some REAL hope to win a title in the next couple years, if we don't win it all we can at least have some fun seasons.I still think Darvish prob ends back up in LA though, he LOVES the Dodgers and LOVES the LA community...people often forget that Darvish is not only 50% Japanese but 50% Persian as well, and LA is one of the few US cities with a large Persian population and Persian culture etc. So I get where he is coming from. Hopefully the Dodgers are still a bit soured by a couple bad games and more importantly can't get under any sort of threshold. Is Darvish perfect? No. But most teams don't let perfect pitchers go! (Unless you are the Twins and wanna give him up for Gomez, Humber and Mulvey jk)The beauty is none of 5/120 5/130 5/140 6/150 will really 'cripple' the franchise anyways!
twinsfanstreif Provisional Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 5/85 or the Twins look elsewhere Where do I sign?!
twinsfanstreif Provisional Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 I wouldn't. The standard contract contains language pertaining to ability to perform at minimal levels that I would be in violation of from Day 1.Define "minimal levels," I'm sure I could do "something"
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 And I don't think that ERA is sustainable. I don't want to be the guy buying stocks right before the correction.Perhaps he'll be one of those guys destined to outperform his FIP. Ok, then I'd be wrong. But, that's my opinion at this time. The guy is 27, he's been in MLB since 2013. His career ERA against tough hitting team is 3.83. His career K rate is over 8 and his career walk rate is under 3. He suffered a bit last year with a spike in his walk rate. I get that. He also spent some time rehabbing an injury and I'm not sure how much those are/aren't related. I don't think the guy is trash, and if he can be had cheaply, he's fine. He's certainly a decent bet to be better than Gibson and possibly even Berrios. I get the concern, that's why he's cheap, but the guy isn't garbage... that is my point. Yes, if I'm trading Kepler, I'd want Archer, but no, I wouldn't be upset if the Twins got Ordozzi for a reasonable price.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 I'd suggest not giving sports owners (who have proven time and time again to be some of the worst humans on earth) the benefit of the doubt.Yeah, salaries are rising, but owners are making more and more and more and more and more money then they ever have before. I think it has more to do that the evidence for collusion is circumstantial and pretty weak at this point. You're right not to give them the benefit of the doubt because of history, but it's also fair to acknowledge that the case thus far is pretty weak. Big contracts have been signed. The bigger problem right now is that the teams with the deep pockets have all bowed out. That's an issue of economics 101 when the teams with the most money aren't driving up the prices like they usually do.
ashbury Verified Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 Define "minimal levels," I'm sure I could do "something"I'm getting way off onto a tangent now, but in trying to research some funny response I actually located a copy of the boilerplate portion of the MLB player contract. It's at MLBTradeRumors.com so I take it to be likely legit.https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/files/mlb-contract.pdfSome people might find it interest to scan through, in its own right. Troublesome for me would be: "The Player agrees to... keep himself in first-class physical condition and to obey the Club's training rules." Deal-breaker from the git-go. There's also this pesky word, "skill", that keeps popping up. "The player represents and agrees that he has exceptional and unique skill and ability as a baseball player." I'd also have to claim to have no mental defects. Right there in writing.

Yes, if I'm trading Kepler, I'd want Archer, but no, I wouldn't be upset if the Twins got Ordozzi for a reasonable price.I'm not terribly interested in his ERA. Too much of that is out of his control. His career FIP is actually only about 2% better than Gibson's, so they're more or less a wash. I don't want another Gibson in the rotation. Again, perhaps he's destined to be one of those guys who will always outperform his FIP. I admit those guys exist. If he is, then I'd be wrong. I never claimed he was "trash", I would never say that about a person I don't know. I just don't view him as enough of an upgrade to justify blocking a Mejia, or a Gonsalves, or a Romero.

bustedstuff88 Verified Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 I apologize because I haven't backread but has any discussion been had about the fact that the twins have offered Darvish a 5 years and he has not taken it? Beyond that it was widely reported yesterday that Darvish TURNED DOWN a 5 year offer...id place a bet that was Minnesota. Guys, I dont think he wants to play here. Its not our fault...we are offering otherworldly money and hes not biting. It just really sucks that the one time in the teams history that we actually open the checkbook and our wanted man wont take the check. Sad but lets go prove them all wrong.
bustedstuff88 Verified Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 I think the FO has done a really good job this offseason. Looking at all the free agent signings, Pineda and Reed are the two best deals league wide as of yet. Rodney is a fine deal, and Duke has real potential. The Twins are still in the markets, both trade and free agency, for big additions to their weakest link. By the time this all plays out we’ll get one of Darvish, Lynn, Cobb, Arrieta, or Archer, optimistically. True Statement
Twodogs Verified Member Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 Probably should stop blaming the player on this one as he isn't the one going in and negotiating. I feel that most of the responsibility lies on the agents with all of these drawn out negotiations. JMO

That's how we will know if he turned down the Twins. Again JMO

It is THEIR fault, though. They have shown no desire to make the move that will put them over the top... ever. Even signing Darvish isn't going to make them the favorite. At some point they need to go all in or in 50 years we'll be talking about the glory days of winning 85 games and sneaking into the play-in game every couple of years. Even when they don't go all in they are still prone to long rebuilding projects so what is the point of not trying to win?
