Why on earth is he starting multiple games for a team that is currently in a playoff spot of the season ended today?

That would be a question for the front office and/or coaches that have continued to try to make this work.

But seriously, is there anyone out there that believes this is a good move? If so, would love to hear a convincing explanation.

They need to get rid of more chaff than just Turley. This starting pitching rotation has been a revolving door all season. Turley should never have even started todays game. Especially with the rain delay. Should have just made it a bullpen game and optioned Turley before the game even started. I would DFA him, as I doubt anyone claims this guy.

If someone claims him, so what?

The Twins signed Dillon Gee yesterday and Santiago should be back soon, so Turley will be off the roster before you can say "bip." I bet you can say that pretty darn fast, mind you.

Sadly, Gee and probably Santiago are more than a week away, so someone MAY have to start between now and then. I vote for giving Fernando Romero a one-day looksee. Give him a taste of the majors!

Either way, the Rochester Express will be moving bodies again tonight...probably Rurley and Busenitz both being exchanged for fresh arms...but can Pressly or Wimmers come back? Has it been 10 days?

Or Turley off the 40-man and they add someone else...probably another temporary -- Matt Tracy!?

Whatever the reason, having this guy start multiple games for this club in a playoff spot?

Total failure by the front office. Ditto with this disaster of a bullpen. Not very impressed with them so far.

Castro? Solid move.

And a whole lot of nothing after that...

Because he throws 95 from the left side with a good breaking ball that he hasn't had a feel for up here. There's no denying that he's been horrible up here, but there's a ton of talent in that left arm.

Plus the whole "team currently in a playoff spot" talk is hilariously early. You can't talk about all the flaws the team has and still bring that up. It's June. They aren't making moves with "oh hey, we're in the playoffs if the season ends today" in mind.

Yeah.  This is the team that had the opportunity to go 6 games up in the division, but got swept by the team they trailed at home.

"Playoff" (sic*)  mode?

Laughable.

(*) There are no playoffs in baseball.  There are play-ins if necessary to get a team in the post-season.

How is it early? It's mid june. The season is already 1/3rd over.

They are in a playoff hunt, make no mistake about it. Losing stupid games like this by tossing out guys that have zero reason to be on a big league club is a total failure by the FO.

Throws 95? Who cares, major league hitters (and AAA hitters) can hit that all day long (as they have done so far)

Wimmers was optioned on June 13, and tomorrow is June 23, so that might work. (His 26th man appearance doesn't count.) Wimmers could be safely DFA'd too if a different arm is preferred.

Pressly was optioned on June 17, so he has a few more days to wait.

There is no fight in this team, the coaches, the offense, or even the fans, when our starting pitching comes in like Turley did today, and blows up the game by the end of the 1st.

There is no fight in this team when the front office makes bargain bin roster acquisitions during the offseason and corresponding moves during the season, instead of putting money down for real pitchers.

There is no fight in this team when they are apparently reserved to the fact to send out starters like this as if we aren't playing competitively enough to be in the playoff hunt almost halfway through the season.

The end result is the offense becomes deflated and gives up when they see that the rest of the organization has given up when we throw out starters like Turley.  Look at how hard they fought for both Santana and Berrios to win games these guys start in and look at tonight or any of the Cleveland games.

Completely different team on the nights we send out real starters.

It was Turley's turn. 3/5 of the projected opening day rotation is on the DL.

Let me know what MLB team has 8 or more MLB starters.

It sure is easy to complain. What's your alternative? Specific. Or it's meaningless.

I think Turley deserved a 2nd shot after his first performance. However, if it were me, I would have sent him down after his second start. This performance in his 3rd start only proved the point.

It should also be pointed out that the offense didn't exactly show up when Turley pitched. He received exactly 6 runs of support while on the mound. 5 of them were in his first start. The Twins scored 1 run in his last two starts.

Lets get real. We came into the season looking at Santana, Santiago, Hughes, May, Gibson as the starting rotation with Berrios and Mejia in the minors. In case of emergency we had Wheeler who put up decent numbers for a couple years at AAA but didnt project well, and Gonsalves hopefully would be ready by mid-season. None of that counted AAAA filler we have also thrown at the wall.

From that list, we lost May all season, Gonsalves lost time and development, Santiago and Hughes also went down injured and Gibson was so bad we sent him down for a while. Really? You're calling the FO inept because they threw Turley out there when he had been tearing it up in AAA for us? I would a lot rather give him three rips at it then see the likes of pitchers like Wilk anymore. I guess now we will send him down and Heston is next? Hopefully Santiago is ready to come back and we dont have to see that yet...

Getting behind so far so fast....... this team tends to take the day off - like an NBA team behind in the regular season by 25 toward the end of the 3rd quarter. As many runs and as horrible as he was, even if they did give him 5 runs of run support a game, they would have lost.

I guess I don't know what some expect at this point. They didn't sign anyone in the winter for the rotation. 1 MLB contract was offered with Belisle. They're going to have to keep throwing darts at the board picking up random pitchers off the waiver wire, or trade a couple of prospects to acquire an MLB caliber arm.

Posted

Turley's best gambit would be to play in Korea or Japan, Make some money, and hope he really can cross the line into the MLB. Regardless of how he does in AAA, he is not there yet. It was painfully obvious after the first two starts. This one was on the FO. My cat could even tell.

Everyone knew coming into the season the Twins rotation was a rather large question mark, injuries happen, it sucks but it happens, the twins had he worst rotation in baseball last year and added......literally no one.

What did they think would happen? The lack of depth was a joke, and even when injuries started piling up the lack of real solutions was a joke.

Sorry, but IMO the new twins regime are in completely over their heads.

Didn't fix the pen

Didn't improve the rotation

Didn't trade any assets for anything of value

Other than inking Castro, name one positive thing they have done?

The Twins have been winning in SPITE of the front office. Make no mistake about it.

Santiago made his rehab start last night, he should be ready to pitch as soon as Monday, and go 75-80 pitches.

Man, the Twins added such stellar names as Seth Rosin (now with Saints), Jim Miller and Ryan Vogelsong, who didn't make it out of spring training. They they added Yohan Pino, Matt Tracy, Drew Rucinski, Nick Tepesch, Nik Turley who did, plus bring back Nick Greenwood and Jason Wheeler (both gone) and such bullpen arms as Alex Wimmers. Throw in pickups like Kevin Chapman (from the Braves for Santana and now gone) plus Kam Mickolio and Tim Melville, plus Mr. Wilk and Mr. Heston. And now Dillon Gee.

Sure the rotation is a mess because of no Santiago (did we not all say NO to his arbitration) and Hughes (you can eat contracts, you know, and move on) not to mention injuries to May. The bullpen got hit with no O'Rourke, Perkins down, Chargois somewhere.

And we waste a roster spot on Rule 5 Justin Haley (should we have just kept Miguel Diaz?).

Until we can advance folks like Reed and Bard and Burdi (injured) and Jay (was injured) and Curtis and Melotakis, we have to run thru still more fringe guys, including Baxendale, Hildenberger (who may be the next coming of Anthony Slama in the eyes of the front office) or even Raul Fernandez.

I imagine we could call up Huribut to start, or even push Eades or Slegers, as we wait for Jorge, Romero, Gonsalves to "be ready." What happened to Kohl Stewart and please advance Lewis Thorpe!

Sometimes a lowly minor league guy can surprise you! Give them a chance, especially if they are already on the 40-man, folks!

What is pretty amazing IS that the Twins, weak division aside, have been in first place or close for soooooo long.

Somewhere we still have Michael Tonkin and Ryan Pressly breathing for a major league job, again!

Man, what a list of names. Like law school grads looking for a firm to attach their name!

Further evidence that minor league statistics in a partial season sample are poor indicators or major league readiness.

The eyes of a skilled staff are critical. I hope we have those skilled eyes.

Actually, Wimmers was the 26th man during the last doubleheader, not Wilk. Wimmers is eligible to come up now.

Update: Darren Wolfson is reporting that Wimmers is getting called up again.

Looking back, Vogelsong should have pitched in AAA and shouldn't have asked for his release, as he'd probably get plenty of starts in the majors by this point. Who knew guys like Tepesch, Wilk, and Turley were going to get starts in the first 40% of the season!
