gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 A couple tweets from Chip Scoggins - New GM can do anything but fire Molitor. Gad.
mazeville Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Anybody paying any attention to what media members are saying about Pohlad's comments should be highly discouraged. I like Paul Molitor and think he's fine. But you have to give the new GM the ability to hire the manager. In addition, the team will look at both internal and external candidates. This tells me they're going to give the job to Rob Antony. It's just more of the same.
SF Twins Fan Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 This is something I don't understand. Molitor hasn't done anything to prove he's the right man for the job and his position should be up to the new GM. The Pohlad's are going to scare away potential GM's by putting rules in place.
Intramural Legend Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 A couple tweets from Chip Scoggins - New GM can do anything but fire Molitor. Gad. I've heard that Ryan wasn't the biggest fan of Molitor. I think we just figured out what was behind the timing on the firing
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Well, I guess that settles the debate whether Molly was a TR or Pohlad hire. For an owner who normally stays out of baseball decisions, it's strange to put that clause in for whoever's interested in the position.

Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Phil Mackey also tweeted out a bunch of useful info... but I'm not sure how to post tweets here. @PhilMackey (I can't figure this out) I find it interesting that TR was told a month ago that he was a goner. The Pohlads really do see this as Terry's mess and not Molly's fault at all.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I wouldn't take the job if I couldn't hire the manager.....can't imagine one of the top candidates doing it. This sucks.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 The Pohlad's have a point that this mess is on TR, but Molly's done his fair share of damage too with the quick hooks on Chargois, Meyer. And letting Polanco, Kepler the first call-up rot on the bench.

Our GM pool just a got a lot smaller when the owner won't let his new GM fire Molitor (unless he says that Mollie is only guaranteed to be safe as manager for the 2017 season only).
sorney Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Sigh....clueless owner putting restrictions on the new GM.Most likely limits those interested.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Well that's disappointing. That might narrow the GM pool, and oh yeah, Molitor does not appear to be a very good manager, especially for a young team,
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Those tweets from Mackey would be depressing if I allowed sports to do that to me. Awful.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I wouldn't take the job if I couldn't hire the manager.....can't imagine one of the top candidates doing it. This sucks. If there's any positive out of this story, Molitor's contract is done after the 2017 season. Could be a financial thing for the Pohlad's not wanting to pay for 2 managers the same year.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Pohlad said that Ryan is "the right guy" and he can be the GM for as long as he want to, about a month ago. He said, he unsaid. Can do the same about Molitor. Unless it happens, do not believe it. Words are just words, and Pohlad's particularly (based on what he did to Ryan after he said that for Ryan) are apparently pretty cheap...
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 Mackey's tweet rant was pretty rough on Pohlad. I bet he's not getting a Xmas present this year.

It's mid July, the decision on the 2017 manager can still be months away. Because this would be an insane requirement of the new GM, and hopefully once the smoke clears Pohlad will come to his senses. Mark Rosen certainly made it sound like on KFAN he believes there is no chance Antony is a serious candidate, which is encouraging
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 chipscoggins @chipscoggins I asked Jim Pohlad if he has studied other team's organizational structures. He said he's looked at every team's media guides. Not kidding.

We'll see if Pohlad sings the same tune if a qualified GM blows him away and tells him why Molitor is wrong for his particular vision. It's a foolish thing to say unless it's posturing. It might not have even been said for Molitor's sake but simply to prevent the players from quitting.

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I don't get this one as much. The team wants to go with the kids... by all means do so, but Molly has been pretty adamant against that approach. I can live with the boneheaded moves up to a point (presumably if he's improving in that area), but I don't like the idea of Polanco getting a call up and then rotting on the bench. That's not how a prospect is handled. Those are the types of things that worry me, and if I wanted the job, that's the type of crap that gets stopped. I get that the mess starts and ends largely with TR, but this strikes me as the kind of meddling that will make problems worse before they get better.
jimmer Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 After "you can't fire Molitor", that was the worst.....unreal.Between those two things, I think the only way an owner could look more clueless is if he actively tried to be more clueless.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I wouldn't take the job if I couldn't hire the manager.....can't imagine one of the top candidates doing it. This sucks. This rather strange quote from Pohlad confirms that this organization is rife with both bunglers and meddlers. That concept of "hands off" ownership now strains credulity- it's like Pohlad is pulling a Rip Van Winkle act- waking up from 18 years of slumber and feeling unjustifiable urgency to keep Molitor on board no matter what- Hey Jim! Molitor retired in 1998- there's nothing all that special (besides being "St Paul's own" for whatever that's still worth) that suggests that keeping Molitor in place is non-negotiable! With all of the high potential prospects just beginning to inundate the roster, why would you make the GM job less attractive by restricting the new GM's ability to implement his vision for how best to use his assets?
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Between those two things, I think the only way an owner could look more clueless is if he actively tried to be more clueless. Ya, I think the total system failure starts at the top.....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Interesting tid bits in Phil Mackey's tweet rant:I can't say I'm surprised that they allowed TR to craft his exit plan after being loyal to the organization for so long. I AM surprised that he chose it to be a firing. Can't say I'm too thrilled learning more about Dave St. Peter's power in the organization. A GM working "under" him doesn't sound promising at all to attract top candidates. Re: Researching org structures via "Media Guides" - You're kidding, right? We all had an idea that this team was behind the times, funny to read a quote about it that Mackey tweeted. Now, who knows if it's a real quote, or a "source close to the situation told me" to create his narrative.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 After "you can't fire Molitor", that was the worst.....unreal.Brutal. Just brutal. You wonder how much owners can screw things up but they can really screw things up.

This sucks. On one hand, Molitor is only guaranteed to be around one season. On the other hand, if the new GM isn't allowed to get rid of him when they want to, what's to say that they'll be able to do so when Molitor's deal is done - assuming Molitor would want to re-up anyway. One step forward, two steps back.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 One step forward, three steps back. No other org in sports would insist a manager on a 100 loss team stick around no matter what. Just sell the team for Petes sake!
