Cory Engelhardt Verified Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Carlos Baerga on instagram is reporting that Ohtani to the Blue Jays is done. I don't know if that is enough of a report, but it might be close. And it sure would be cool to see him in Toronto
AceWrigley Verified Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 I was thinking the Giants were going to sign him. He would own SF, but then again, SF has become a pile of poo, literally. RpR and weitz41 2

AceWrigley Verified Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Actually, this Ohtani secret free agency trip is a drag. Could have been a lot of fun for baseball fans. Mike Sixel 1
tony&rodney Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Toronto is a beautiful city, but I'm not a fan of that park.

AceWrigley Verified Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Ohtani Shmotani. Now for some real news. The Rays acquire Jake Mangum as the player to be named later from an earlier trade. Whoah, didn't see THAT coming. MMMordabito, Oldgoat_MN and CRF 1 2
CRF Verified Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 I think it would be pretty surprising if he signed with the Jays. I figured LA or SF would be the choice. Even Seattle. No matter who he signs with, the money is going to be off the charts, but aren't there tax implications for players in Canada? Why pay taxes in both countries?
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Yesterday was amusing and disgusting all rolled into one. People tracking a random plane. I'm laughing. People making public Yusei Kicuchi's restaurant reservations. I'm laughing so hard that I can hardly breathe. His dog is named after a baseball team? I'm laughing so hard that I've fallen on to the floor. However... the reality of it all... All of it... The reality of how something like this happens... I'm not laughing. Nothing is more important than an informed public. Unfortunately this is how we are informed on nearly everything... not just baseball. This is how we demand to be informed because we ain't waiting for facts. We created this Morosi who is busy apologizing today. Journalistic ethics, integrity... Gone... we have no use for it. If signing with the Jays, Ohtani would own a country. Having seen rabid Toronto hockey and baseball fans, might well be accurate. B.C. folks flood Mariners park, we are inundated with " 'eh?" speakers when Jays are in town. Might be appealing to Mr. O.

Rigby Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Will be interesting to see if Manfred allows the deferred payments to impact the luxury tax threshold the Dodgers just obliterated.

AceWrigley Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Wow, $70 mil a year, makes Aaron Judge look cheap.
Rod Carews Birthday Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 What do you suppose the upper limit would be for payroll to start to really hinder teams like the Yankees and Dodgers?
Nine of twelve Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 The Dodgers have cleared a major threshhold that I thought never could be cleared. I now think less unfavorably about the Yankees than I do about the Dodgers. DocBauer, Rod Carews Birthday and RpR 1 2

Whatever the limit is, the tax rate should increase exponentially once the it has been exceeded. The further above the limit a team is, the higher the percentage of the overage that they have to pay.
