Rumor: Twins among teams 'seriously in play' for Rodon

After they didn't buy Verlander, I don't really care. This FO likes to wait until the main course has been taken off the table and nibble at the cold sides. My bet is that Rodon has had his light shine as bright as it ever will, and he will tank from here on out. Maybe one good year left. But he has not proven he is a durable starter at all. Verlander would have been better to have than Correa last year (for the $ especially) and the next 2. I bet the contract Rodon signs will be a total albatross for whoever.

That said..... SPEND JOE SPEND!!!!! Get the best pitching you can, and sooner than later.

I mean....was there even ever a slim chance that Verlander ended up in MInnesota?

Sure! Just as much of a chance that Judge was. Let's see........... how many zeros do you need to put in front of that 1%?

I guess, in some minds, there never is............ until there is.

Kinda like the dog that never bites anyone... until it does.

Verlander only needed a one year and then a two year contract. Kinda like the high dollar for Carlos Correa. In fact, the new 86.7 million (vesting option for a 3rd year) and last years 25 million contract for Verlander is only about 7 million more than the Correa contract was for 3 years, and he could opt out after one and two. Certainly if Correa was worth it, Verlander was and is worth it and maybe a bit more to outbid.

So even though it was a condescending rhetorical question, I would actually say the answer, and say it is yes. Certainly always...... at least ........ a slim chance.

Mauer wasn’t a free agent.

No one’s throwing, or asking for a pity party for Minnesota.

Neither was Buxton, but that's beside the point right? Just like Judge, those two had a preferred destination and turned down more lucrative opportunities.

We're irked about a hypothetical because it's the Yankees, but whatever.

Dan Hayes of The Athletic went as far to imply it's likely the Twins will end up with "one of the Carlos", whether that ends up being Rodon or Correa.

I read that tweet as "the Twins will pursue one or the other," not that they're destined to sign one of the two, which is basically a giant nothing burger. Nobody needs to be informed that MN isn't signing both players.

Who leaks that the player prefers Team One but Teams Two and Three are in play? Not Team One. Not the other two teams.

The player's agent? Why do they want to tell Team One to keep lowballing them?

Because the gambit is so much fun?

Seriously, though, so many people are playing high-level chess in this situation that it's just fun to sit back and watch.

$20 says it Silva. The Twins love a good “reclamation project.”

No, it isn't likely at all. Still it could happen if the budget moves to $160 million. Could but doesn't seem prudent looking forward is one thought or there is a ton of money coming off the books is another thought. We need to let this play out.

I heard a rumor today that Rodon is now looking for a seven year deal.  If that is true then NO THANKS!!!

Also, the 1956 Sci-fi classic was about Rodan, not Rodon.

I doubt he'd have come here if the Twins doubled the Mets offer.

The roster is pretty much set. They’re not (and shouldn’t) sign Rodon to a 7 year contract. Anyone below that is a marginal upgrade at best. Sign a reliever or two and an outfielder.

So, he prefers the Yankees ... does that mean if he doesn't go there, he's going to have a piss poor attitude a la Lance Lynne from a few years ago when he doesn't get what he wants?

That said, he'll be going to the Yankees.

Interesting take...I might have gotten my BANK but I'm not truly happy type of deal.

How about Carlos Gomez

Sorry, but I don't want Rocco catching any more bad habits; we need him watching the game, not sniffing bats.

I guess he just does not want to face Judge and Stanton for many years to come like everybody else.

From MLBTR, the Cardinals are "unlikely to meet" Rodón's asking price:

The Yankees "at one point reportedly hoped to limit any Rodón deals to four or five years in length," but Rodón and Boras were looking for seven years:

Could offering six years get a deal done? I'm trying to believe the Twins are still in it, which may be folly.

Anything more than 4 years is not terribly smart for a guy with his injury history. So if you really want him, just give him the seven years he wants. There’s no negotiations with the top salaries anymore, it’s a blind auction and the minimum bid is the player’s initial asking price.

Sellers' markets can be like that.  Look at real estate just after the worst of the pandemic.

Lol.  No they’re not.  After dozens of reports like this over the years, and only winding up the rotting corpse of Josh Donaldson for peanuts….these reports should be met only with ridicule.
