Jeffers

I've seen a few comments on Twitter about Ryan Jeffers. One I just saw is he's allowed 65 SB since the beginning of 2021, which is 6th most. Coupled with his batting struggles I'm starting to think maybe the Twins will look for a veteran to complement Sanchez at some point so Jeffers can goto St. Paul and work on stuff.

When Randy Arozarena steals 3rd with 2 out that tells you all you need to know.

If I am opposing teams, I would steal every opportunity.

Jeffers framing and sequencing yesterday looked really good and has been good. I thought his play behind the plate was critical to the win. I would keep playing him and expect the bat to develop.

Jeffers has been in a deep slump. He’s due to warm up soon. Yes, I’m somewhat concerned about teams running at will against him, but most SBs are on the pitcher, not the catcher. At least half the time, there is no way to throw out the runner given the pitcher’s slow time to the plate.

Yes the pitch framing is really good but you can't have 99% of baserunners stealing on  a catcher at will.

Ironic this is coming from Lecroy fan. The catcher that brought F-Robby to tears.

When robo umps call balls and strikes and the bases get bigger, Jeffers will be what we thought Sanchez was going to be defensively. He better get his hitting going big time by then.

He hasn't brought Frank Robinson to tears yet...

He leaves a lot to be desired.

3 for 19 this season = 35 games.

13 for 46 2021 = 84 games.

2 for 14 2020 = 25 games.

You do have to lay some blame on pitchers.

BUT LET'S LOOK AT GARY SANCHEZ:

2 for 14 2022 = 26 games

10 for 50 2021 = 110 games

5 for 13 2020 = 41 games

11 fore 36 2019 = 90 games

Definitely not putting all the blame on Jeffers here. If he was hitting a lot better I wouldn't think the SB were a big deal. But there is 2 big problems with his game right now.

I'm not saying it has to happen but if the 2 issues don't start turning around they have to look for help.

LeCroy is not playing, Jeffers is, tacky analogy.

This comment cries out for context.

Near the end of his career, LeCroy was inserted at catcher in an emergency situation by Washington manager Frank Robinson, one of the best baseball minds in history. At that point LeCroy could do everything that was required of a catcher and do it well except one thing. His throwing arm was shot. Consequently the opposition ran him ragged, which is what everyone knew would happen. Frank was indeed in tears, but it was in sympathy with LeCroy, knowing that he gave it everything he had in spite of being placed in what was essentially a no-win position.

Please don't diss LeCroy. He's one of my favorite baseball people.

While I'm at it, let me say that Frank Robinson would be my all-time favorite person in the history of baseball had it not been for #34 on the Twins.

I don’t want to be defensive but I do want to say, I wasn’t dissing Matthew Lecroy or Lecroyfan24. I merely pointed out that it was ironic that someone who (by his moniker) is a fan of a catcher noted for his inability to throw out base stealers should criticize Jeffers for the same thing.

100% agree! Mr. Jeffers bat is still on no hit savings time. While we had all thought that Mr. Sanchez was going to be a defensive liability, it seems as though that is placing the fear in the wrong location (catching talk). While Mr. Buxton flirted with .170 for a bit a week ago, he has the skill to hit and bring up the batting average. Additionally, his throws on steals appear to take forever to leave his hand. Not bashing here, just going on what I see. Professor Baldelli appears to love the guy. I long for the days when Garver was in the game and he was not superb on the defensive side. GO TWINS!

Garver can't even play as a catcher this year so that trade is working out in our favor right now.

Pitch framing isn't the secret art that it used to be. Most catchers are highly trained in pitch framing these days, all younger C's in most systems are good framers. Even if Jeffers is better than most, it's not enough to make up for his incredibly terrible bat and horrific arm.

The Twins have had lots of offensive drama: Buxton, Correa, Arraez, Larnach, Gordon, Kirilloff, Celestino...just about all of them have had articles devoted to their offensive contributions.  Jeffers' horrific season has been hidden for the most part simply because there are other stories that are more interesting. But at some point the Twins are going to have to do something about a guy who plays half your games hitting .150 at the back of the lineup.

The time for Jeffers to go down to St. Paul was 2 weeks ago. Anyone, literally anyone in St. Paul deserves a chance to prove he can do better.

I am wondering, all the brouhaha about pitch framing and all the weeping and moaning about umpires creating their own strike zone, which is it?

both. It is all laid out there, if you actually care.

Glad he was in the line up today. He came up big when no one else had done anything.

I was thinking Rocco should pinch hit and lose the DH. I was wrong … again.

I take full credit as I'm sure he saw this thread.

Taking credit as well for his 0-3 (2 SO) outing yesterday, I hope? :)

Is he? His hitting woes seem to be an issue of mechanics/approach rather than luck.

He was in tears not because of how poor LeCroy did, but that he subbed him mid inning because of the stolen bases.  It was an emergency roll, but they needed the second emergency guy to fill in.  I have nothing against LeCroy, other than he was the guy that replaced Ortiz, because he hit right handed, and we all know how that decision played out.  Again, not his fault.  I really like LeCroy while he was with Twins.

My issue with Jeffers throwing guys out is his throws are not where they need to be.  I am sure much of the stealing is both him and the pitchers, but you watch the throws to second and so often the guy covering comes off the bag the catch it.  One of the throw outs he has had was at third, and had the Rays still had a challenge it would have been overturned, but that would have been on the third baseman.
