nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Sounds like the Mets owners may veto a Syndergaard trade if the GM presents them with a return they deem insufficient. Which, yeah, sounds about as backwards as expected with this bizarre hire.

Good to know that things are still going strong over there.

Darius Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Thor couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Minnesota. A guy nicknamed Thor belongs in Minnesota (the Scandinavian heritage runs deep). It’s a marketing dream. The amount of money the Pohlad’s could leverage from that could very make a steep salary worth it. Sort of similar to why they were willing to pay Mauer. Besides all of that stuff, pairing Thor and Berrios with this offense takes this to a totally different level. Now we’re talking about legitimate World Series contender shortlist. If we can get that deal and still be left with one of Lewis or Kirillof, along with Larnach and Graterol, I’d be over the moon.

The other story out there is the Mets don't want to trade with the Astros, a team they deem smarter than themselves analytically. So yeah, they are still the Mets

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 The thought that came into my head the other day was that the Mets have a really strong young offensive core, a strong bullpen and two front of the rotation type arms, why would they sell when they should be contenders next year? Now the thought that comes into my head is, I bet Syndergaard wants out of that flea circus and has said so behind the scenes.

The story is Wheeler is a free agent and would likely be walking if no move is made. So you could sign him to an extension now, and use the pieces from the Syndergaard trade to improve that core and still have Wheeler/DeGrom at top of rotation
Puckett34 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 If I remember right, a hot young pitching prospect named Kershaw was also possibly on the table. Perhaps that was bad reporting or I'm misremembering, but if he was, that's an awful miss.I don't remember Kershaw being an option/rumor. He very well could have though. I do remember either of Lester and Ellsbury being the headliner from the Red Sox. But that's the only one I can recall. Don't remember what the Yankee package might have been

Don't remember what the Yankee package might have been Kershaw was part of the rumors, but I think most of the trade talk centered around Red Sox, Yankees, Mets. Not sure how much Dodgers really were involved. I think Phil Hughes was a big part of the Yankees talks. Seem to remember the Twins wanting Ellsbury and Lester but Sox not willing to offer both

Don't remember what the Yankee package might have beenKemp, Kershaw, and LaRoche. But to be fair, those were the names floated around Twins circles. But they never contacted LAD... Johan said no to that. He wanted to go east coast. Made it hard when at the end of the day, only 3 teams were an option. To me, that was probably the reason he should have been kept. Hindsight was 20/20 of course, but we were hamstrung there. May as well have let him walk for the picks... other than a year of JJ Hardy, that trade netted us absolutely nothing.

The best were the Twins fans proposals for a Dodger trade. We were gonna get James Loney, Clayton Kershaw, and either Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier. Good times.

alarp33 Provisional Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Then my question to you both would be: Would you consider including someone currently on the 25-man roster in a trade? I'm not sure who they would want off the 25? We aren't trading them any of the outfielders (personally I would include Rosario to get the deal done but that seems unlikely) and don't really have pitching to trade that's MLB ready (I'd include Thorpe if necessary). Kiriloff is probably closer to the majors than Lewis. I'd trade him, Graterol, and a lower level prospect or two.
JW24 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Then my question to you both would be: Would you consider including someone currently on the 25-man roster in a trade? Absolutely. I think the biggest concern is what impact within the clubhouse trading a member of the 25-man roster would have. Additionally, who would the Twins trade away for Thor in a legitimate offer? Rosario? He is maybe the only guy who would have the amount of value the Mets are looking for in return that the Twins would put into a trade (I don't think Buxton is on the table, but maybe Kepler is?). Marwin and Adrianza could fill in the corner OF spots. I wouldn't love that if I am the Twins.

I don't know why they'd rather have Wheeler than Syndergaard though, even with the prospect return. Wheeler is three years older, also has injury history, and will cost a boatload more to extend.
SomeGuy Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Whats up with his slider? He is throwing it half as often as he used to (From over 20% 3 years in a row down to 12%) and it is getting lit up. Fastball velocity is right in line with career but slider is down 3-4 MPH compared to last 2 years. jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Give the Mets a pick 2 Kirilloff or Lewis (or any position player prospect) + any pitching prospect. Who can beat the deal? The Astros possibly with Whitley and Tucker. The Yankees can’t. The Padres won’t. It will hurt to lose Kirilloff but they have some depth on the corners. They have Kepler long term in RF. The free agent cost for a bat on a corner or DH is reasonable.

I think the Mets would take Rosario or Kepler in an instant but I don’t think the Twins would consider it for even a moment.

He's too valuable to the Twins over the next couple of months to trade away.

The Twins probably never even contacted the Dodgers. But man, we had some dreams, didn't we?? Still believe they'da been better off keeping him, putting another 230 innings on his arm, and taking the picks.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 I'd sweeten the pot on the prospects at the back end of the deal if the Twins can include Kirilloff instead of Lewis on a deal like this. Let's put all the corner bats in a bucket, Kirilloff, Larnich, Rooker, Raley, Wiel, Blankenhorn and Davis. What are the odds that Kirilloff will actually turn out to be the best of that bunch? 25% tops? The odds are probably even less than that. And it's not like Kepler, Rosario, Sano, Cruz and Cron are giving them much room this year or next.
