Sano Enters Camp Injured

I'm not sure anyone has touched on this yet at TD, but mods should feel free to delete this if I'm wrong.

Following an off-season that Miguel Sano finally seemed healthy and in better shape, he enters camp today with a lower right leg/heel laceration he received while in the Dominican Republic, per Do-Hyoung Park. [twitter]

Sano's inability to stay healthy throughout the past two seasons has blurred this FO's visions for the future. The Twins just cannot afford something like this to happen, especially early in camp where he can easily fall behind. Here's hoping that the cut is relatively small, but heel lacerations and blisters can take awhile to heal and are usually tough to manage without pure rest. It's a very delicate location; the Twins should treat it as such to prevent long-term problems.

What are your thoughts on this news? Could you see the Twins signing a 3rd basemen soon as insurance due to the fact that no one is pushing him in the pipeline?

Great. Just great. Reminds me of Wartman waiting until spring training to deal with his wart.... even though it isn't even close to the same.

Not that I haven't been wrong before, but if this just a cut on his heel, he'll be doing full baseball activities reasonably soon.

I know intellectually you are correct, but I can’t help but think to Ervin. Sano will get an infection, amputate just below the knee and then make a comeback with a prosthetic leg in 2022, and be the first MLB amputee to hit 40 homers in a season (2023)

Nice! If him and Gibson start the year on the DL that opens a couple spots on the 25 for the likes of Austin and Mejia to get a couple weeks of MLB paychecks and to showcase their talents in hopes of catching a whol years or more worth of checks.

The extent of the cut wasn't really described, so hopefully you're right

Laceration sounds a lot more intimidating for some reason    :D

Sano just needs a healthy spring training with no distractions or setbacks which is why it concerns me

According to the Reusse article: "Sano has a laceration on his right heel that will be checked fully by the medical staff during Monday's physicals. It's not official, but presumably he was spiked by a teammate as Miguel's Estrellas team celebrated its Dominican playoff championship after a 4-0 victory on Jan, 23."

Another note on Sano here includes "....the consensus was clear: His body looks good."

I can't imagine a month after being spiked during a celebration that he's still going to be hurting too badly. Let's hope this random issue doesn't spoil Spring Training for him. I don't think it will....

Apparently happened about a month ago and was the reason he was not in the Caribbean League finals.  This might have been an answer to a question asked on that subject.

I think it's no news.  If Sano had issues walking, there would be reports about it.

Laceration is one of two medical terms for a cut. When the cut has sharp edges, as when you cut yourself with a knife, it's termed an incision. When the skin is ripped open, even if it's only a fraction of and inch, it's termed a laceration. So try not to stress too much. It's just medical terminology.

Incision is a cut made on purpose, like by a surgeon.

Puncture wound is the term for a cut with defined edges vs. a laceration.

I'm aware and was messing around. I was a pre-med major at one point (lol). I've seen large lacerations that have taken awhile to heal, but it sounds like that isn't the case here thankfully.

I'm going to decide not to worry about Miguel Sano's health this season. He got a cut...so what? Cuts heal. The bigger issue always will be his approach at the plate. Like most young players, Sano needs to do a better job recognizing out-of-zone pitches early enough to lay off them. This may result in more standing K's, more walks, and longer at-bats, but eventually it will force pitchers to throw pitches in a smaller window.

That's.

When.

Boom.

Until Sano shows some plate discipline, his health issues don't really matter.

Reusse is never this kind. I’m worried about him (and Sano.)

He's always a different writer during ST. I find him readable at this time of year.

(Or maybe I'm just in withdrawal.)

That's how I feel about it too... at this point, at least. Obviously that's not seeing it or knowing anything more...

Cue the Monty Python "It's just a flesh wound."

A “laceration” that’s not healed after nearly one month? Yah, I’d be a little concerned! Do they have a medical people in the Dominican?

If it's on his heal, it could keep reopening due to rubbing on his shoe/cleat.  I know I've had wounds like that.  He just needs to be put on regiment so he can heal completely/ or given the gear to allow that healing while playing..  He's got a week before games, so hopefully he doesn't miss much, if any, time.

After reading all the comments, I am considering ending it all. But I can't decide if I should slit my wrists, cut my wrists, or lacerate my wrists? :)

Sigh. Every time I hear about one of these "minor" injuries, I get paranoid and wonder if Buxton is next and will suffer from another nagging injury again. Please,  please, please let these guys be healthy all year.

Isn't the winter off-season for slashing payroll and spring training for making player cuts? Sano's just a little ahead of the process.

But then there's that "blowing up the team" thing that involves both slashing and cutting...

I guess baseball is a violent game.

Today's Strib article on Sano states that he was a DH in the Dominican League, going 10 for 45 (.222).  One HR and 12 SOs.  So, i'm surprised at all of the exuberance over nutrition and weight.  .Let's see some results in the field before we get too giddy!
