John Kelsey Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I'm sure Molitor will go to Rogers first, but I think Hildy is the best guy for the job right now. Thoughts?
Aaron Cross Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 By committee. The way its should be.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I wouldn't be surprised if it's Belisle, but I'd like to see someone that could be a future closer, like John Curtiss, come up and get a shot. I don't see Hildenberger matching the profile of a closer.

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Pick up another castoff free agent and turn them into the next Brandon Kintzler. Maybe this time get someone who misses bats, the return will be a bit better.

Aaron Cross Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 The cookbook sure worked good on Sunday. Heaven forbid you ask Belisle for 5 outs.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Young players, please. If you are going to punt on the season, go for it. Call up the young RPs (and Garver ). I would guess Belisle.
Aaron Cross Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 So we take our current best reliever and make him closer, and he sits there for a week because there aren't that many save situations. But he's the closer!
Aaron Cross Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 The way current day bullpens are used is downright blasphemy. They gotta have roles! Yesterday Belisle couldn't get 5 outs because Rogers is the 8th inning guy!
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I wouldn't be surprised if it's Belisle, but I'd like to see someone that could be a future closer, like John Curtiss, come up and get a shot. I don't see Hildenberger matching the profile of a closer. I bet it's Belisle also. The Twins should send him through waivers right away, then if he picks up a half dozen saves before August, you got yourself another "closer" to trade. Closer, such a silly title that carries some tangible value.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Young players, please. If you are going to punt on the season, go for it. Call up the young RPs (and Garver ). I would guess Belisle. Rogers has thrown more innings than Kintzler though. If the Twins stink it up in the second half, the "closer" might not be getting as many appearances as the guys in other roles.
Aaron Cross Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I was sure Molitor would be more old school. I was wrong. I was sure he'd be more of a disciplinarian. I was wrong. Ended up being the second coming of Gardy. Alike in every way
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Belisle is the obvious choice. Perhaps pumps him up and makes him an August target, and gives the younger guys some reps in roles they may actually be used in next year.
Tuba Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I like the Belisle in August to pump up trade value plan, then Hildenburger/Curtiss in September.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 If it's Belisle that will be disappointing. I'm with Mike... If they want to punt the rest of the season, then punt with young players.
drock2190 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Belisle being a closer for a month won't change his trade value. He's a known commodity and I bet no contenders will want to rely on him in a close game.
bighat Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Like our Whine Line Host and Mike, I think Belisle would be a disappointment. I like Hildy! Give 'em the rock! Trade Rodgers tonight too, and if they can get Duffey outta there, why not also.
Pius Jefferson Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Yahoo Fantasy Baseball seems to think it will be Matt Belisle. He's the third most added player today and that would only happen if people expect him to be the new closer.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 No one really saw Kintzler as a closer. He was a fine setup man. I would keep Rogers and Duffey and Belisle as set-up guys. I would let Hildenberger close for August and then look at it again. I would not put into the closer role ANYBODY who will not be with the tem next season, unless you want to give it to Perkins and just let the season happen.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Based on what I have seen from Molitor (not what I would do) :Belisle until Perkins will be activated. For the ones who do not keep tabs, Perkins Pitched 2 shutout innings at the GCL, moved up to high A where he faced 5 batters, struck out 2, walked one, and allowed 2 hits and a run
gman Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Let Rogers close for now. He's due for some time off.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 I absolutely agree on auditioning the young guys now! Hildenberger, Busentiz and even Curtiss. It may be the minors, but they have closed before. (This is where I tend to agree with a committee approach possibly). I know I'll get a lot of cross-eyed looks here, but what about Pressly? I know he's had a bit of a nightmare season but the arm is there. He can get SO. Used like Kintzler was, starting an inning, could he find his confidence and a role with an opportunity? Just a thought. And I see the way you just looked at me! Lol
BenB Provisional Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Gimenez, he's their most reliable strike thrower.
Twodogs Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 I say give Pressly the first shot, his stuff grades out as a closer, he hasn't done a bad job lately, he might blossom in that spot and if he doesn't bring up Curtiss in September. But I'd say no to Rogers, Belisle, or Hildendinger, keep them in set up roles.
Major League Ready Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Young players, please. If you are going to punt on the season, go for it. Call up the young RPs (and Garver ). I would guess Belisle. Yes ... Let the auditions begin. It will serve the future and give us something interesting to watch the the remainder of the season.
Shaitan Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Belisle...just so none of the young pitchers gets an arbitration raise. Because that's the only time when saves matter.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 It'll be based on matchups. Belisle when it's mostly righties, Rogers when lefties.
