Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Wednesday afternoon, the Twins announced that they have claimed left-handed starting pitcher Adam Wilk from the New York Mets. The move puts the Twins roster back at 40. UPDATE: Following the announcement that the Twins game in Chicago on Wednesday night was postponed to August, the Twins announced that Drew Rucinski had been optioned to Rochester to make room for Wilk. There is speculation, maybe an assumption, that he will start for the Twins on Saturday. He made just one start for the Mets this season. He made five starts for the Mets AAA affiliate in Las Vegas where he went 2-3 with a 5.91 ERA. Wilk is 29 years old. He made eight appearances for the Detroit Tigers between the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He did not pitch again in the big leagues until 2015 when he pitched two innings for the Angels. He spent 2013 in Korea. His one start for the Mets was an "emergency" start on Sunday when he pitched in place of the suspended Matt Harvey. He gave up six runs (5 earned) on eight hits (including three homers) and a walk in 3.2 innings. Maybe it's just me, but this feels like a move completely meant to be a stop-gap. Maybe it's one start on Saturday. Maybe it's a couple of starts before Jose Berrios, Adalberto Mejia or Kyle Gibson are ready to come back to the Twins. bluechipper Provisional Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Say what? Why exactly? I just hope this is for the bullpen and not to keep Berrios in Rochester but it sure looks like that's the case. If he's going to the bullpen, I'm fine with it, but he's basically only started in his career. d-mac 1
gmarais66 Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 There is absolutely nothing in this guy's history that even hints he could be an effective major league pitcher. He has been awful. Oldgoat_MN, Jerr, d-mac and 5 others 8

How is this move necessary when we have Berrios or Gibson can come back up to make the start Saturday? Gibson may not be on schedule for a start Saturday, but I'd take him on short rest over this guy. Mike Sixel, Jerr and Doomtints 3

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 I think it almost goes without saying, but this is definitely an "old front office" style move... What kind of plan is in place here, when with only 1 starter injury (Trevor May), 40% of the rotation in mid-May is Nick Tepesch and Adam Wilk? And we're only a game out of first place... Wasting starts on a guy who is almost guaranteed to be bad instead of giving Berrios his chance is just so disappointing. Dozier's Glorious Hair, Dantes929, Oldgoat_MN and 5 others 8

If Wilk does start Saturday it speaks volumes as to what Falvey thinks of Berrios specifically and the Twins pitching prospects in general. At least two should be promoted to AAA.

Maybe it's a couple of starts before Jose Berrios, Adalberto Mejia or Kyle Gibson are ready to come back to the Twins. There's no need for a "stop gap" here. Nobody is hurt. Gibson was just demoted with full knowledge that he would be down for 10 days and probably more. Berrios and Mejia don't have some sort of magic switch that will get flipped in their next few AAA appearances. This is a deliberate plan to use lousy pitchers in games that matter, for no discernable gain... mazeville Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 What is the point of handing starts to older players who are barely replacement level? We've been waiting for a winner for six years. And if we can't see a winner, we sure as heck would like to see guys who have potential to make this team, and make it great. Jose Berrios has proven all he can at AAA. Aldaberto Mejia is a young starter with upside. Why are we giving starts to Nick Tepesch and Adam Wilk? Why??? This team deserves its declining season ticket base. This is just trash. pbrezeasap, Hosken Bombo Disco, gil4 and 9 others 12
John Bonnes Site Manager Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 The most entertaining thing about this move is why they Mets released Wilk: they had to make room for Tommy Milone. At least two should be promoted to AAA. I feel like Terry Ryan would have called up Jason Wheeler to make a start if that's what they wanted to do, rather than claiming a Wheeler-like guy. It does make me wonder what they're (Falvey/Levine) are seeing or not seeing from Berrios. I get that they want to make sure the mechanical changes he made stick, and if he's still doing the things that he was doing in the big leagues, I get it. But this is just a guy who (like Tepesch) can make 1-2-3 starts while we wait for something from Gibson, Mejia and Berrios. DocBauer 1
