Cory Engelhardt Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I saw this link from baseball America today on some of the top prospects in the rule 5 draft. The Twins have the 1st pick in the rule 5 draft (Thursday December 8th) so their top pick may be potentially listed here. Thoughts? http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2016-rule-5-draft-preview/#u0B7V3DXrMfrwflH.97 On first glance; Weiss, Guillon, Fernandez and Brasoban look interesting. I can't say I know anything about any of the players, but it is fun to read.
BK432 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Yeah, these aren't top prospects or anything, so I am ignorant as it relates to who these guys are. But I agree that for this team, Brasoban and Fernandez sound like decent fits for a shot in the dark.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Brasoban looks interesting. For a team lacking in upper minors 3B prospects, a guy like Wood might not be a bad gamble.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Wood and Evans had breakouts last year in AA and continued this fall/winter. Is there any way the new FO could convince Molitor to release DanSan and go with a AA lotto ticket all season instead?Probably easier to just draft a reliever.
Homer Hanky Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 And the first comment is about how awesome DJ is... i sure wish we could have added him.
Gagne Fan Provisional Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I'm afraid that Baxendale will go off the board pretty quickly. He could be used in many ways.....long relief, spot starter, 7th inning guy.I think we are going to regret not adding him to the 40 man.
Cory Engelhardt Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 I was curious why Zach Vincej, reds ss and almost triple crown of the Arizona fall league winner, wasn't listed. Supposedly solid with the glove. Must be a reason he wasn't protected
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I need to look at a more complete list (and will do this week,) but I think that the gem here is Venezuelan LHP Ismael Guillon. His changeup is up there with another Venezuelan pitcher of yore, and you cannot really teach the feel of changeup. Has been mired with injuries (TJ and a torn lat) that made him lose a couple of seasons. His control is a step better than Pat Light's and his FB out of the pen will play big. Definitely worth a chance because lefties with a plus plus change do not grow on trees, plus the Twins do well when they have lefties with plus plus changes. Hard to see them pick anyone else, to tell you the truth. The old regime would have gone after either Jimmy (Brasoban) or Johnny (Chirinos) and called it a day, btw...

Beg to differ. Same age, same level, Goodrum (another mistake to be left unprotected) was better (.275/.352/.464 vs .249/.339/.443 last season) and has much more positional versatility.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Drew Muren is the older brother of Twins minor leaguer Alex Muren (who missed the 2016 season with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome). Drew was the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks leadoff hitter and centerfielder the previous two seasons.
gSutter Provisional Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I just wanted to throw out 5 names NOT on the list that I find interesting, and since our new FO hails from Cleveland and Texas I think there is a chance there is a player from 1 of those organizations that they really like.Cleveland- Nellie Rodriguez 1B, Luis Lugo LHP, Anthony Santander 1B/OFTexas- Jario Beras OF, Pedro Payano RHP

A big opportunity to upgrade.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Not much comes of this draft, like it did back in the day......I'd pick the pitcher most likely to be a good/great RP.
King Provisional Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Not much comes of this draft, like it did back in the day......I'd pick the pitcher most likely to be a good/great RP.You still get gems every once in awhile. Odubel Herrera comes to mind. Joe Biagini is another.. Luis Perdomo was raw last year but held his own. If the talk of rosters being expanded to 26 players, we could see even more players taken than recent years.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Sure. Last year 5 teams took 2.The Twins also can pick first in the Triple-A and Double-A phase if they choose. A big opportunity to upgrade. Ryan Pressly has been pretty decent in the Twins pen. Pressley's career WAR is 2.5. Of all the Twins 1st round Rule 4 picks since 2007, only Kyle Gibson has topped that. Maybe the Twins should petition to change the CBA so they can trade all their 1st round picks in the Rule 4 draft for Rule 5 picks.
Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Hmm, Yimmi, or Yonny ... Yonny or Yimmi. Tough choice.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Baxendale or Boshers? Ask yourself that question.
theBOMisthebomb Verified Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 This is a good year to roll the dice on a Rule 5 pick, it might be a catalyst for a brighter future.
DJSim22 Provisional Member Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 So we want to add another Pat Light? I bet they select a player from Cleveland's minors that Falvey knows.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 So we want to add another Pat Light? I bet they select a player from Cleveland's minors that Falvey knows. At the same time, Falvey probably knows their flaws too, and participated in the discussions that led to those players being left unprotected. I'd be rather surprised if the first overall pick came from Cleveland or Texas (unless there is some obvious consensus candidate from one of those orgs). Too many interesting guys on the board at that point, familiarity just isn't going to be much of a factor. Maybe if we try making a second round selection, although that might be pretty unlikely too.

Good counter point, although Cleveland's 41st player is better than some on our roster. The reason I think it's possible is no one really blows me away as the top prospect to pick first. A bunch of guys with no control, a couple guys who had career seasons, a few that are far away from the bigs and would sit at the end of the bench collecting dust.

old nurse Verified Member Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 The discussion should be what player has a significant chance to be your 12h or 13th best pitcher or utility/position player. other opinionshttp://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/katohs-guide-to-the-2016-rule-5-draft/
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 So how do people feel about taking a higher upside guy who is further away? Will people be disappointed with "wasting" a roster spot for a guy who's clearly not ready? How about if the rosters are expanded to 26 players.

ShouldaCouldaWoulda Verified Member Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 I prefer that we take Tyler Heineman, another Astros defensive catching framing wizard. Switch hitter, who started out cold, but hit well the last several months. No power, but good contact and obp. Probably has been around Castro some, so could maybe continue helping mold him? Think it would be good for our pitchers to always have a good glove to throw at. Personally think non of the catching prospects in our system seem likely to be considered upper tier defensively, while still being able to hit some, or vice v. Think Heineman would naturally fit in behind Castro and possibly a long term solutions as our catcher or backup catcher. *take best available pitcher, if any are worthy after that.

Will people be disappointed with "wasting" a roster spot for a guy who's clearly not ready? How about if the rosters are expanded to 26 players.Very much in favor. Here's my suggestion for a high-upside guy: Angel Perdomo, LHP, Blue Jays: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa658084&position=PHe started at high A last year, struck out 11+ hitters per inning. Here's the fangraphs writeup last year, when he was the Blue Jays #9 prospect...and he made real strides in 2016, including better walk rates (under 4 per 9):Perdomo’s story is still relatively unchanged: he’s a hard-throwing left-hander with command issues and physical projection left in his 6-foot-6 frame. He continues to pile up strikeouts at lower levels, but the command hasn’t stepped forward yet, and it’s looking more likely it moves him out of the rotation. Both his slider and changeup could be average offerings, but it’s his fastball that’s going to keep him moving forward. There’s interesting upside here in the almost 22-year-old that will start to flesh out more over this season and next. Some big-framed pitchers take a bit longer to control their bodies, but he has a ways to go before looking like a big-league starter.
