howieramone2 Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I wonder if isn't his bat, but his glove. No reason he couldn't be an average defender if he put the work in. I had that same thought. I've read 3 or 4 minor league scouting reports when he was younger, and there is no hint he can't be an average defender.
beckmt Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Big problem is playing time. Do not have a feeling on this, but think that until one of Rosario, Hicks, or Buxton have to be sent back to AAA, he will not see time here. Tori Hunter is having a good year, so Arcia may see AAA until something changes or Sano needs some AAA time. If front office feels that they are OK with Kepler and Harrison coming, Arcia then become a trade chip that needs to be cashed before it totally loses value. This probably means this winter.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 He's out of options, right? So he's either on this roster next year, or traded........

The Twins of course could recall him and then later option him, but next year he would have to be exposed to the rest of MLB to be sent to the minors.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 He's out of options, right? So he's either on this roster next year, or traded........Which seems like all the more reason to keep him in the minors a bit more this year to work on his contact ability/pitching selection.

The option isn't triggered until he is demoted, correct? My understanding is that they could start him in the minors in 2016 but once he was called up to the Twins, he's there for good or the Twins have to expose him to 29 other teams.

Thus bringing Arcia back up and sending him down again doesn't cost anything. But once guys are on the 40-man, each year they must either be on the active roster (25-man) as of Opening Day, or else be optioned, or else DFA via the waiver process. I don't think they can do in 2016 what you are proposing.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 They need an option to send him to the minors following spring training. They won't have one. I believe Arcia will develop more with 10-15 major league plat appearances a week than 25 in AAA. He isn't going to learn how to hit major league pitching in AAA. He has recovered his swing and timing following the hip injury. Every time Escobar, Nunez or Robinson is in LF is an opportunity missed. Plouffe will be on maternity leave. Mauer and Hunter will benefit from days off.

Easier to be successful having a guy like Arcia being a minus defender is he is swing a plus bat and the other guys in the outfield are doing so as well and the other outfielders are plus defenders as well.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I go back and forth, but right now I'd roll with Rosario. I don't see a clear weakness to his game, does anyone else? (besides a general overaggressiveness). Until one shows itself I'd probably let Arcia mash in AAA where hopefully he is working on his weakness (inability to turn around a belt high heater). But having him up next spring should be about a 1:1 replacement for Hunter or maybe better. With Rosario/Hicks/Buxton taking up the other two spots the defense should be fine overall. Those 4 should make for a solid OF rotation with the ability to left-right matchup, etc.

So far he's been able to mask it somewhat by being a really talented hitter, but I don't know how long that will last.

Bulldog Provisional Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Huh? Eddie Rosario and Arcia have virtually identical K-rates. And Arcia has a BB% of 6.2% vs Rosario's 3.9%. Buxton and Schafer were much, much worse on strike out rates. ok but eddie rosario is a much better all around player arcia is a one dimensional player hitting
Bulldog Provisional Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I think the Twins are taking the same route they took with Hicks last year in AA/AAA and with previous players I forget. Arcia has proven he can hit MLB pitching, but not consistently. He has proven he can hit AAA pitching, but not consistently. He will get called up when he proves he can hit consistently, period. That, and Rosario (who looks good so far) is already starting to falter. It happens. Most prospects go up and down. Wait 'til there's a need. Arcia's problem feels like Morneau's in Year #2. He's used to destroying the opposition without the homework, so he doesn't put in the extra effort. Whenever it clicks that he can improve his game through additional effort or a different routine, it's going to be a good thing. By keeping him frustrated in AAA, the Twins are trying to force his hand.Since when do we compare justin morneau to arcia im sorry but i dont see him as a twins starter beside as a backup

I'm not necessarily in disagreement, though Arcia has been maddeningly inconsistent during his time in the majors, and I'm quite glad he's heating up. I think the big issue is that this is something he COULD do, and there's no reason why he cannot be a plus bat with an even glove. That said, I think he should get another shot at some point soon. They can send Santana back down and move Escobar to SS and upgrade two positions.

Part of the learning curve.

They can send Santana back down and move Escobar to SS and upgrade two positions. I've endorsed this position, and sure enough, Santana comes back from the dead, going 5-11 in his last 3 games. If he could continue showing his bat has regained semblances to his 2014 season, he suddenly becomes the best of the 3 SS options. And Molitor has displayed public confidence and devoted extra behind the scenes work towards Santana in the hopes and expectations that he can be the guy he was last year. If last weekend wasn't a fluke and can be sustained, this would make SugaShane as the new "most expendable" candidate, followed by Nunez. It would seem that Arcia has to, and deserves to, come back at some point, but the Twins recent history this year though, has been promotion-due-to-injury.
ashbury Verified Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Wow, that would be one for the medical journals.60-day DL at a minimum.
twinssouth Provisional Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Arcia has been up for couple of years now and he still plays lousy D. He seems to be too 1 dimensional. Can't believe Molitor would have much confidence sending him out as a late inning replacement. My guess is they keep him down as long as possible to clean up his D.
joethastud Provisional Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I was at Fogo De Chao last night for restaurant week and Oswaldo Arcia was there with family. Not sure if that means anything or not considering Rochester is on break too.

If Santana's still here in 2 years it means he's come around and hit closer to what he did last year. If Escobar's still here in two years it means other guys have NOT come around.

They started the year with Santana, and despite ample opportunity for someone to grab the position, Escobar hasn't done so nor been given an extended look...he hasn't started three consecutive games there yet this season. They keep looking for opportunities to return Santana to the position. FWIW, I tend to agree. I don't see Escobar as an everyday SS, and I think Santana has the best tools to be one.
