drock2190 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Yes, call him up. 39 year-old Torii Hunter does not need to play every day. Arcia can take a couple starts a week from him. Rosario also does not need to play every day, and can spell Hicks once a week in center. It won't be that hard to get Arcia 3-4 starts a week against RH. Not to mention, Mauer and Plouffe can get a breather every now and then, pushing Sano to the field and Arcia to the DH. Plus that would mean one nice bench bat. I miss those days of a pinch hitter that could actually do something once in awhile.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Arcia has been playing well for 10 games and this means that he needs to be called up to sit on the bench for at least 1/2 of the games? Yes. If not now, in the midst of a pennant race, when runs have been increasingly harder to come by, when? Having bench depth for late game advantageous ABs, and expanded breadth of L-R power options in the lineup. Especially with a super-rangy guy in CF who can cover for Arcia much of the time. What's not to like?
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Or, put him in Left and hope no one hits it to him. Which honestly is basically what we do when Escobar is out there.
mudcat14 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I'm in the 'trade Plouffe' corner. It's gonna happen in the off-season at the latest. Pittsburgh is ripe for plucking. Let's see who we can get.
jimbo92107 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Until Vargas gets back up, Arcia is the best power-hitting lefty bat in sight. He's okay to play RF, passable in LF, and can DH or pinch hit against RH pitchers. That's a pretty valuable thing to have, plus he may be the closest thing to "that guy" to bat behind Sano, who had his first O-fer today. Big hat tip to David Price, who pitched like Cy Young material. Detroit is a very good baseball team, even without Miggy.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I like the thought of calling up Arcia for Santana following the break. 7 guys for 6 spots around the diamond, with Nunez and Escobar at SS (and Escobar spells Dozier if needed), 2 catchers, and Robinson as pinch runner and defensive replacement that is DFAed when Buxton returns.
darin617 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 6 hr in the last 9 games for arcia what does he need to do to get called up #arciapowerDid you see how many hits he has in the last 9 games? 13 hits, one 4 hit game and a 2 hit game. The all or nothing approach might work in AAA and will not translate in the majors. I would love for Arcia to make it back to the majors.

Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Here I go with more incredulity: On what planet is it justified to have Shane Robinson on this roster instead of Oswaldo Arcia? Prove something in AAA? Uh, he did that quite awhile ago . . . it started in 2013 . . . then again in 2014. Do you really need to see him get to .900 OPS again in AAA before switching him with Shane Robinson? Do you know how many question marks I wanted to use for all of the above questions? I get the immediate intuition about having a full lineup, but since when isn't it a good idea to have 13 position players who are good? Oswaldo Arcia no longer needs to "play every day" somewhere to develop. Neither does Aaron Hicks. Or Eddie Rosario. Etc. There is a way to juggle Sano, Plouffe, Mauer, Hunter, Rosario, Hicks, and Arcia around so that 6 of the 7 are starting and then there is one actual weapon on the bench to use when X sub-.600 OPS catcher strolls up into the box. Or it's Danny Santana. Or Eduardo Escobar.
jun Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 There are only 12 pitchers on the roster. I think Arcia can help. He can start against a righty for Hunter once a series in attempt to keep Hunter strong throughout year. He can start for Plouffe with Sano at 3B once every couple of series. The Twins don't have a threat on the bench with the bat to pinch hit for Suzuki. Arcia's return would give them that option. He might be more useful than Robinson or perhaps Santana.Well, I haven't seen Molitor pinch hit for Suzuki all season.

Ok, I think I see the above then . . .Yes, you are right. This is clear. There is room on a good team to *have good players fill the roster* or at least 23/25 of one if you want one position player like a backup catcher or a speed/defense only guy, and then one mop up/long relief guy. A bench of Fryer, Nunez, Santana/Escobar, and Robinson is just horrific.

What's not to like? It's awesome how a hot 2 weeks magically fixed the complete mess that he was for almost 3 months (minus injury time). I wouldn't be surprised if he returned to a complete mess if was called up and got inconsistent playing time again. Let him play for another month and then call him up. Perhaps he will take this as a message that he can't be Pedro Cerrano and try to kill every ball when he come back up. It's easy for everyone to say Hunter needs a day off, Rosario needs a day off, Plouffe needs a day off, Mauer needs a day off and magically Arcia has playing time. That is very, very unlikely to happen. And frustratingly it will be Nunez that gets the spot starts if it does.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Hunter is getting worse and worse as the year goes on. Adrenaline, or whatever it was early, only carries you so far. He needs something.....maybe some rest. IMO, Santana should go to AAA or AA (Polanco to the other), and Arcia should come up. Arcia should move back to RF, and Hunter should rest some. You can rotate Hunter, Arcia, Rosario in the OF, and rest Plouffe a day a week and have Hunter or Arcia DH that day...... There is room for all the actual decent hitters to be on this roster. Santana, Robinson, Escobar, Nunez? Only three of those* should be on any roster. *well, maybe none of them should be, but you shouldn't have 4.......

As Mike said, there are plenty of ABs for everyone to avoid giving Nunez, et al, too many of those available ABs. Arcia might not start every day, and he shouldn't be hitting against most LHP regardless, but he can be inserted into most every game to PH in which he's not starting. Here's how the "magic fix" has gone for Arcia the past 3 seasons: Arcia's 12-game July demotion to AAA in July, 2013: .375/.490/.725/(1.215) Arcia's first 12 games after MLB call-up in Aug, 2013: .298/.353/.660/(1.013) Arcia's last 11 dates before MLB call-up in 2014: .317/.378/.756/(1.154) Arcia's first 11 dates after MLB call-up in 2014: .378/.378/.733/(1.111) Arcia's last 11 dates at AAA in 2015: .354/.392/.771/(1.163) Perhaps there's a possible pattern worth pursuing here?

Rosario .689 OPS. On pace to be around a 0 WAR player defensively according to BREF. UZR is 1.3 in 52 games, I believe that would be about +4 runs over a season. Arcia was -1 in just 19 games this year. I would leave in Rosario for now in the corner. Hunter will be in the other. And Sano is my DH. Arcia is first guy up if someone gets hurt or struggles. I think Arcia hurts the pitching staff.
GACbaseball Provisional Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 He should be brought up with the caveat that he'll be sent back down once Buxton gets back if he doesn't play defense, strikes out too much, etc. Make it known that he's not being given a role, he has to play for it.He doesn't need any more time in the minors. He needs some defensive work but I'd rather have him get it while contributing at the plate at Target Field. We don't need to see Escobar or Robinson in the outfield anymore, that is not productive for neither now nor the long term

Optimally, two of three, Rosario. Buxton and Hicks are in the OF at all times. Arcia would be a lower liability in RF and spell Hunter 2-3X week (he turns 40 soon, and it's showing a little bit), but he could also play in LF with Rosario in RF. Not perfect, but the Twins main problem right now is scoring runs, Arcia can help solve that and provide another power bat in the middle of the lineup when he starts as well as a late-inning PH option.

I think Molitor can pick the right combination of Twin starter and opposing starter to get Arcia a few starts in the OF every week. I am would avoid starting him with Hughes pitching or against an opposing lefty. Late innings with the lead they can sub him out. From there, his performance earns him more time or return to AAA.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Arcia would certainly help more than Robinson. He's out of options next year. Either get him up to help, or trade him for something that will help. Him playing in AAA does no good.

I think we view him as our DH for the next five years but that tenure may not really commence until next year. I see either trading Plouffe, Sano to 3B as one route, the other is Sano moving to RF or LF. If that is the case he isn't helping right now but we should not sell low either. We would be approaching teams at this point from the position that we don't trust him in the OF or think he is our best option at DH, why don't you pony up something real nice for him?
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 If one of Sano/Arcia is in the OF, you think it will be Sano? I'd bet a lot of money against that.
jimbo92107 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Oswaldo Arcia right now is the closest the Twins have to a dangerous lefty hitter to place behind Miguel Sano. They should call him up specifically for that reason. Arcia, for all his otherwise mediocre tools, is a legitimate home run threat. Put him in the order behind Sano, and RH pitchers might think twice about throwing so much junk to Sano on 3-ball counts. If they "unintentionally" walk Sano, here comes Arcia, ready to bash out anything near the zone, with Sano on first to increase the damage. Arcia plays only when the starter is an average rightie. You either DH him and let Sano play 3rd, or you DH Sano and let Arcia play LF or RF. He can also pinch hit on a RH reliever, most of whom are fastball/slider guys that attack the zone. Arcia can handle that. He's not a major puzzle piece, but as a lefty power hitter, he's the closest thing to protecting Sano from that side.

I think he comes up IF Mauer, Sano, or Plouffe get hurt. Molitor IS a huge fan of going with the hot bat. As I've illustrated, Arcia has a history of coming off of a hot streak at AAA directly to a hot streak in the majors. You touted Rosarios .689 OPS.... but failed to note that In his last 17 games, Rosario (predictably) has slumped badly: .210/.246/.306/(.560). It doesn't hurt to take your chances with Arcia as an alternative hot bat while Rosario regroups, the drop-off in defense would be negated if Arcia comes in and does what he's done after previous call-ups coming off of a hot streak in AAA.
