tobi0040 Verified Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Left field is where a major league team's least skilled defensive player plays. (Recall Delmon Young and Troy Willingham.) I don't recall a Troy Willingham. I think you were mixing Josh and Troy Williamson, who by the way would have covered a lot of ground in left field. Of course he would have dropped the ball every time.

It's been a long time since I thought about Troy Williamson.... In case your organization needs a motivational speaker, he's available for hire.... And a proud owner? of a Which Wich. http://abouttroywilliamson.com/

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Other than it being an easier position? Maybe, but let's be honest - that isn't why it happened. Not passing judgement but let's not be naive about it.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 ok but eddie rosario is a much better all around player arcia is a one dimensional player hitting Yes, and that's the one dimension that is clearly missing from the Twins attack.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Maybe, but let's be honest - that isn't why it happened. Not passing judgement but let's not be naive about it. Of course it wasn't the reason, but let's also not pretend that this is the reason he continues to be bad on defense. People never tire of excuses for young players not performing other than the player himself (not saying this is you, just the context of the entire conversation).

It's not going to help a bad defender to get better, but I agree - he was slow footed and had poor instincts from the get go. (Something I've been plenty vocal about, even while loving the kid's potential with the bat. He's a DH, plain and simple)
Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Other than it being an easier position? Really? At Target Field are you sure this is the case given the amount of ground to cover? Also, you know that it was all because of Hunter, right? Also, Arcia had played RF almost exclusively in the minors and in the majors up until this year.
Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Also, no one is "pretending" anything. What I actually wrote was that the move to LF couldn't have helped him any. Good god.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Really? At Target Field are you sure this is the case given the amount of ground to cover? And the Twins are a better team with Hunter in RF than without, for that matter.
spinowner Provisional Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Really? At Target Field are you sure this is the case given the amount of ground to cover? Also, you know that it was all because of Hunter, right? Also, Arcia had played RF almost exclusively in the minors and in the majors up until this year.Barring a trade the most likely scenario is that the Twins' four outfielders next season and for a few seasons to come will be Arcia, Buxton, Hicks and Rosario. So who plays where?First, you want to put your strongest arms in right and center. That means Buxton in center and Hicks in right when they are both in the lineup and Hicks in center when Buxton is out.Second, since Rosario appears to be a more skilled defender than Arcia it makes sense for him to be the one to adapt to alternating between right and left and have Arcia play one position consistently. That would be left field.Third, it hardly matters at all whether right field or left field is larger. There are three outfielders and the same amount of area to cover no matter who plays where. Since left field at Target field is a bit larger, the center and right fielders simply shade that way a bit to make up for it.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Not sure if I agree with the assumptions above. I think Arcia is a right fielder, misplaced this year as a left fielder this year. Secondly, all four listed have good arms and it wouldn't surprise me if Hicks played a lot of left field if his bat proves to be legitimate. Rosario has already moved back and forth between left and right, so it would figure that he would pivot back and forth if the four outfielders are indeed Rosario, Hicks, Buxton, and Arcia.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I really don't know what to say about Arcia. It does seem that our memories are very short. The first month of the season our OF defense was awful and to add on to what I just said, that was a humongous gripe all of last off season, especially after the Hunter signing. I thought people were making too much of a deal about... I was dead wrong. The outfield defense is damn important, especially for this club after surviving the experience of April, 2015. What we have going on now in the OF is working damn well and since they called up Sano to be the regular DH, the offense has improved. I get it that some of you don't like some of Rosario's peripherals, but you can't be disappointed by the results. He strikes out a lot and doesn't walk all that much, but the guy looks as cool as a cucumber at the plate and he delivers, it most definitely appears that his confidence is that of a ballplayer who is not overwhelmed and feel he belongs. Certainly, I am not an expert on the development of players as I surmise most who post here are in that same boat. Rosario has some pop, and in 2 years time, he could be a 20HR hitter with an .800OPS. (it's not out of the realm of possibility). Certainly his book has not been completely written as of yet and I can envision some good things happening for Rosario. I hope it turns out great. If it is not broken right now, why fix it? As for Arcia, sure, he still has tremendous hitting potential, but the young man is going to be waiting in line for a while if our current outfield remains healthy - which Arcia has had trouble doing.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 While Rosario is more of a multi dimensional player, let's not kid ourselves here. Arcia's hit tool is superior and it's not particularly close. There isn't anything Rosario does at the plate that Arcia can't do better.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Rosario is a multi dimensional player but let's not kid ourselves here. Arcia's hit tool is superior and it's not even close. There isn't anything Rosario does at the plate that Arcia can't do better.I am going to assume that was meant for me. I am no where near ready to surrender my flag on this topic. I certainly admit that Arcia has skills that are very attractive, especially his power. I certainly respect your opinion and in time we will find out who takes the prize. Either way, I hope they both succeed and deliver the goods.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 It was more of a general statement, Bark. I like Rosario's overall ability quite a bit but Oswaldo's bat is on a different level. Much of this board seems to have forgotten that.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I have not forgotten, I Iove his flamboyant style, he reminded me of a Matador playing baseball. When he gets into one it is awe inspiring! I love his Bravado and passion for doing something excellent on the field. But I really like what is going on in our OF right now, it is working. The only guy I could feasibly see him replacing is Hunter and that is not in the cards for the obvious reasons.

I think Arcia getting everyday reps in AAA and waiting for an everyday spot is not the worst situation at the moment. He will get his chance. And Robinson is perfectly fine as a defensive guy, pinch runner and occasional starter against lefties. Pretty much the exact opposite of what Arcia brings to the table. Ruesse brought up a good point a couple of days ago that if Molitor wanted Arcia the front office would bring him up, but I imagine Molitor values the various skills Robinson (and others) bring to the table over the better bat at this point.

When Buxton is ready, this is who should replace Robinson. Plus Nunez can provide the PR and occasional starts against lefties, what he lacks on defense vis a vis Robinson, he makes up for it with the fact that he's a major league hitter. Up until last weekend, Santana was the obvious choice to be flipped for Arcia... as of now, it's not so clear who Arcia could/should replace.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 But I would add as well that when Plouffe goes on paternity leave that Arcia will likely get the call with Sano playing 3b. Maybe he'll hit enough to force them to keep him up.

Where is this Plouffe paternity leave issue being reported? ARe there any published projected due date parameters? The scenario you propose would be a splendid dilemma, indeed!
Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I feel like I have said this a dozen times in the past week: there is room for everybody at least until Buxton comes back. Even after Buxton, it would be nice to actually have good players to fill the roster. Imagine the Twins actually having not one, but two legitimate bench players! Oh, the humanity!

Assuming they are facing right handed pitching at the time of the leave, I hope they would bring up Arcia.
