strumdatjag Verified Member Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 I’m going. Interesting to see if Buxton returns against lefty Ragans - I suspect he will get more rest , or maybe DH today. His MRI on his hip was NEG. AND he’s day to day.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 The only surprise is Larnach. He didn’t start against the righty yesterday, so he’ll get a chance against Ragans—not good duty, but better than sitting two days in a row. Doctor Gast and SwainZag 2

Or is it just component of a Larnach surprise... A sub-surprise or a subprise in short. Well... actually not in short.... Willi js already there. Mortimerkenny21 1

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 I'm a Varland-to-the-pen guy, but I'm kind of curious to see if the hot starts by the other young pitchers can push him to another level. BH67 1

Brandon Verified Member Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 I just don’t get having Margot bat lead off. A sub .300 OBP with no power and ok speed. It’s like having Gladden lead off for us again without the stolen bases.

LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 Varland's biggest problem is showing up again. He just doesn't throw enough strikes. Even if he can get through trouble, he has to throw so many pitches that he has trouble getting through even 5 innings, much less 6.

It was ruled a hit but should have been an error.
CRF Verified Member Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 Ok...let's put some runs on the board for Varland...we'll probably need them.

Too many bad strikes.

Yep, that's why most people here believe his only chance to be successful in the mlb is as a relief pitcher.

Putting Buck on the IL is tough only in that finding a replace would create a 40-man issue. The only position players at St. Paul on the roster are Julien and Camargo as well as the injured Severino and Rodriguez. They could recall Julien, I suppose, and move Castro to the OF. bighat and gregens 2
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 Garland did a good job getting through a tough first inning, especially one where Farmer should have made the play on the first "hit". Having said that, the huge difference between he and Matthews is jumps out at you. Matthews consistently throws strikes, Varland does not. I don't know if the answer is to back his velocity down a mile per hour or two so he can have more fastball command, or whether he just isn't going to get there, I like his stuff but until he throws more strikes he is a bullpen pitcher. I suspect the plan here is to give best at another start against the Rangers in Arlington, and Matthews another start in San Diego against a very good team, and see how they do. Maybe Varland gets one more start in the second game in San Diego depending on whether we can last that long with the seven man bullpen. Hopefully at least two of them perform well. Then we go back to the five-man rotation and one of the three is either in AAA as the sixth starter or in the bullpen. My bet is that Varland will be the odd man out.
