The Beckham DFA clears a roster spot

That's what I thought too.  But I checked the Twins 40-man roster on their mlb.com site, and there are 23 pitchers and 17 hitters on the 40-man (majors, minors and IL-10/15).  I apparently somehow lost track of someone in and among these most recent roster moves.

Because of this post I looked at the 40-man roster and saw that Jake Jewell is listed twice....

Indeed he is, but there are still 23 pitchers and 17 hitters on the 40 man

I just counted twice and got 22 both times.

LOL, I counted noses and failed to notice that a couple of nostrils were repeats. :)

Does Jewell even need to be listed once?

Interesting. That means Moran is on the roster as of 9/1 and playoff eligible while Smeltzer is not?

No. Anyone on the 40-man or 60-day IL as of that date is automatically eligible for a postseason roster, and the Twins don’t have to submit their postseason roster until just before each round.

And anyone in the organization on Sep. 1 can be named as a replacement for a postseason eligible injured player too — so Billy Hamilton could possibly find his way onto our postseason roster this year, even if he doesn’t get added to the 40-man until after Sep. 1.

Twins just claimed lefty Austin Davis from the Red Sox. He will be eligible for post season roster. I don’t know if he has any options or if he must be put on the 26 man roster, or if they can wait until tomorrow to officially add when we can add a pitcher and a position player. I believe there was already a spot available on the 40 man.

Still one corresponding move will need to be made to free a space on the 40 man to add Hamilton. Other moves coming in the next week or two as Ober (60 day), Larnach, Winder, Buxton, Jeffers, Mahle, Sands all become available to come off the IL.

I guess a fresh lefty reliever and a fast guy for defensive replacement and pinch-running are useful enough for the next few games. It's hard to see why either of these players - especially a reliever who was just DFA'ed from a worse bullpen than the Twins' - would be a priority to have on the roster once the players potentially set to return from injuries start coming back in the next couple weeks.

So maybe they intend for these guys to be reinforcements just for the very near future?

Unpopular take here, but the Twins are playing the White Sox and Yankees next, neither of which have a left handed starter. I'd have rather called up a left handed pinch hitter than a pinch runner for the extra spot. Wallner, or even better, Edouard Julien who's an on base machine.

The extra-man moves were about what I would expect. With several big leaguers expected to return this month, some guys on the active roster might be DFAed or optioned. Last reports I have are Winder and Sands along with Dobnak are pitching at St. Paul. Ober is supposed to be ready for his rehab assignment in the coming days. Jeffers and Larnach are supposed to be playing at Fort Myers this week. Buxton should be back too.

Interesting Larnach was moved to the 60-day ... does that mean they don't expect him back this season?

No, he's already been on the IL for 60 days. Just delays another move, in which time an injury could occur or something.

They still have a roster spot with an absolutely disposable position player (Hamilton--unlikely to stay on the 40-man after this season) so if they want someone else that can hit, they could certainly bring them up and designate Hamilton.

You could argue that they have two Hamiltons that don't need to stay on the roster, even.

So Mahle is pitching this weekend, Winder and Ober have already started rehab and Sands should be ready soon unless his elbow is more than bruised. What's the pitching staff going to look like when/if they all are ready to roll?

Austin Davis seems like the obvious target to remove first and the Twins like to yo-yo Moran, but they won't kick BOTH lefties out of the pen, will they? Megill has had a rough stretch, but could we instead  finally see the end of the road for Pagan?

My prediction will be Sanchez gets released for Mahle. Cole Sands is ready before Winder and Ober and is called up to replace Moran. When Winder is ready he'll go to the pen and replace Sands and at the same time Davis' welcome will have worn out and Moran will take his spot. When Ober is ready, Pagan will finally get the boot. Ober will piggyback with Winder who'll be bumped back to a starter and they'll go with a 6 man rotation the rest of the way.

I really don't need to see Dobnak again, but they may run him out there some time too.

I like your thinking, and wish I was as optimistic about Pagan as you. I agree on Dobnak, btw.

Isn't this Moran's 5th callup? If so, I don't think he can be sent back down.

I also agree but they can't option Moran. I think he's been called up 5 times this year and that's the new limit for callups. If he gets sent down again this year he will have to go through waivers and undoubtedly will get claimed and lost. More likely they lose Austin Davis for Mahle, and then it becomes a very interesting choice between a DFA for Sanchez, Pagan or Archer, or a demotion for Megill to create room. Injuries may tell the tale. My guess is Mahle replaces Davis and then if or when Winder or Ober is brought back, we will se either Sanchez or archer go DFA or to the IL.

Seems to me that the claim of Davis was made to provide a bullpen arm for the Chicago series, while Sanchez would be designated as soon as Mahle was deemed healthy. The White Sox (and Yankees) are mostly a right handed hitting rendering Davis pretty inconsequential, and Davis has pretty extreme platoon splits. A host of guys seem close to ready to provide multiple innings out of the bullpen (Dobnak, Winder, Sands, Ober, Smeltzer) with Smeltzer unable to be promoted for another 10 days unless there is an injury.

Sanchez could be DFAed, Megill could be optioned or maybe the Twins could bid farewell to Pagan. It will be interesting to see what happens. As I type this, I wonder if Gray is headed to the IL. We shall see.

I guess the use the addition of Moran as an "injury" add to get around the call-up limit? ANyone explain?

What does Jovani have to do to stay up. Pitching three innings had to be a plus. He's a lefty. Right now, would ratehr see him in the stretch than, say, Pagan, Megill or Sanchez, especially if he can pitch multi-innings.

Hoping the Davis signing doesn't backfire.

You can be optioned 5 times. This is the 5th one so when he comes back he can't be optioned again.

EDIT: I just double checked his transactions and I think the confusion is that he's listed as being sent down on both 8-3 and 8-4.
