ewen21 Verified Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 It is a bit early to judge how it turned out. Plenty of pitchers lose a year of a contract due to injury. As do plenty of non-pitchers. If he puts together 4 or 5 solid years for the rest of the contract, do you think the Cubs are going to be that upset about the one year they lost? He was absolutely dreadful last year, he was grossly overpaid and he turns 33 in August. It was an atrocious deal, in my opinion.
ewen21 Verified Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 It's what they did last year, and all but Cruz this year. So, what is the other alternativeI asked you what kind of terms you would offer Machado. I will attempt to answer your question if you answer mine, Thanks

ewen21 Verified Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Let's move this to the correct thread....In all honesty, I lost track. The long and short of it is I believe the Twins brass are in a holding pattern this year because of the developments last year with the purported "young core"An article was published today in the Star Tribune where Falvey said:"“We have talked about this young core. We still believe in it and we think it is a group that can propel us forward. Having those guys under control for longer than what they presently are would be a good thing, in our minds.”" They believe in them, but I think last year completely upended them. I have no problem with the deals they made this year because they are not in a position of strength in the market. Had Buxton hit somewhere near Andrew Beinentendi and Sano hit 250-36-105 (or some facsimilie thereof) we'd have better footing in the market for bigger names. Not sure how this can be dismissed as poppycock. If they are doing this I certainly understand it.

amjgt Verified Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 I've never been to Minnesota, let alone Minneapolis, but friends that have been there have said it's an awesome city and state. I would assume it would be more about taxes and what not that would make it an unappealing destination, but I can't imagine the city having worse restaurants, clubs, bars, and other entertainment than other mid-market cities. At this point, Kimbrel and Keuchel would be willing to take a high value one year or two year deal. Why not offer three year deals with an opt out after this year. 3 yr/60 mil for both with opt outs after year one. I guess if I'm thinking about that then management has already offered something like that and they declined or are keeping it on the table until something better comes along.Nobody ever talks about the taxes with California and NY. CA is higher and NY is comparable.
beckmt Verified Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 We shall see how this plays out. If the Twins sign 2 - 3 of their core to longer term contracts, some of the angst will die down. However if they do not sign some of the core and then sign no more free agents, I feel this board will explode by the end of spring training.I can understand why they have not been in on many free agents, needing to know what the core timeline is (plan A). But there seems to be no plan B, having enough vets in place if some of the youngsters fail.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 They did beat Oakland that one time... Gather round and grandpappy will tell you a story...Unfortunately, Oakland's single playoff series win since 1990 was also against the Twins, so I think they officially cancel each other out and both should consider their postseason losing streaks intact.

Scouts think there is too much effort in my delivery, but man I throw a lot of strikes.Kiley McDaniel1:24 Not that much effort, just not fine in terms of command and we think he should lengthen the stride some, but the super easy arm speed is beyond elite

King Theo wanted Harper in the worst way, but couldn't clear enough payroll room. Also, Perez is projected to have one more win than Darvish next season. Our pal Yu is very unpopular on the Cubbie fan board and the King is starting to lose his lustre.

He was in charge of WS winners and participants. Way more success than anyone here in decades. We'd be lucky to have his success
amjgt Verified Member Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Some GMs are judged on Championships, but the vast majority are judged on not messing up. This, moreso than collusion, is the reason the high-priced FA are not finding long-term Landing spots

Sure, Cubs fans are probably upset with him at the moment. If he puts together 4 or 5 good years for the rest of the contract, they won't be. And whatever projections you're looking at don't mean anything to me, and neither do the opinions of some upset fans on some random forum.Perez career:::: 4.63 ERA, 1.479 WHIP, 97 ERA+, 4.44 FIP, 5.1 WAR in 7 years.Darvish career: 3.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 124 ERA+, 3.38 FIP, 10.7 WAR in 6 years.Who cares if Perez is projected to have 1 more win?

Johnson had already broken down some of Parker’s old film and had insights about his delivery ready."— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark)

Dman Verified Member Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 He replied..... I totally agree with you. At first I was surprised as well and then I started to think more about it. Rooker's power is elite but but his K rate isn't good and he isn't a great defender either. Javier had a lost season. You could put him in the list but it seems premature at this point. Gonsalves\Gorden stock has fallen after flaws in their game being exposed. You would have to be a believer to put them in. Enlow didn't pitch many innings and his K rate wasn't great. He was young for the level but probably would need to see more to make the list. According to Fangraphs Thorpe only has average pitches so even with a great K9 they are not believers. Arraez has a great hit tool but defense is only OK. He might have made sense to make it but I guess he just didn't make the cut. They apparently aren't believers in Duran either. Balazovic Should have had the best case to make it. His K9 and WHIP are great. He was young for the level not sure what they don't like about the season he had as it was pretty elite. I guess there are lots of guys to choose from and they liked other guys better. In short although I believe as you stated we have plenty of solid talent on our farm. Some of these guys just haven't quite proven themselves elite enough to make the list.

howieramone2 Verified Member Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 I like this move, but I have no problem with Adrianza either. With this move, another extension or so, presto changeo and we're nearing last year's payroll.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 This is probably worthy of its own thread. Marwin would add more talent and flexibility but there's not an open spot in the line up for him, and I imagine it would end any chance of Astudillo making the opening day roster.
