diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 He once could have been the corner piece of trade for a difference maker. I'm trying to figure out which season in the last 7 would have qualified as needing a difference maker.

Shaitan Verified Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I agree that this year's team is disappointing and selling makes sense logistically. But if you're complaining about the product on the field and you want to watch quality baseball, they'll only be worse after selling.

But if you're complaining about the product on the field and you want to watch quality baseball, they'll only be worse after selling. This is my main issue with the trade deadline phenomenon. Most of the time a team officially tanks afterwards, and for a bunch of C+ A-level prospects.
mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Are we selling to just get rid of one year contracts that won't deliver anything except relief to the Polad's bankroll, or are we selling to get more talent in the system? There;s a big difference. If you want more talent in the system, you will need to trade the Dozier's, Escobar's, and Gibson's. I get people are frustrated, myself included, but the notion that players are "tanking" is laughable to me. They are not performing, but they are not "tanking". Huge difference. To even say they are "tanking" is an attack on the character and work ethic of those players. I don't buy that for a second.
akmanak Verified Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I dont think anyone on this team is tanking. That doesn't fly in baseball. Dozier obviously hit his plateau last year and as the Twins usually do they wait to long to pull the trigger on a trade. They need to dump Esky because he is the only player that would get any major league starter in return and not just a bunch of maybe prospects.
The Wise One Verified Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 When they sell the rental players off this team I would hope for 2 things to get in return. One is players that in their first full season of baseball this year and the right to spend IFA money. Two, I hope the guy that picks players is as smart and lucky as the guys who picked out Graterol, Rosario and Berrios. The other way would be if they could sell Gibson and Pressly to the Padres for the catcher.

Unless some team really wants to gamble on Erv in July rather than August the Twins are looking at a rotation of Berrios, Gibson, Odorizzi, Erv, and Lynn for at least the next month. I'd much rather see Mejia and Romero soaking up some of those innings and Gonsalves can do the same when rosters expand if not before. Same goes for the bullpen. Curtiss, Busenitz, Moya, Reed, ect. should all be getting a look. The Twins don't need Rodney, Duke, or Belisle taking innings from those guys. It'd be nice to go into 19' having an idea of what some of these fringe 40 man players are capable of before they're slashed from the roster or drafted by other teams after being left unprotected.

But Molitor will NEVER EVER do that. He's calling the shots on bullpen usage as the front office has stated repeatedly. That's one of many reasons he shouldn't be manager next season. He just isn't willing to go with he young talent.

twinsguy45 Verified Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Sell, but be selective about it. There is reason to expect Buxton and Sano to be healthy and productive next year. We will have 162 games of Polanco. The current outfield of Rosario, Cave, and Kepler are unlikely to regress next year. We have a number of young pitchers in the minors who are showing signs of improvement. May and Pineda should be ready to contribute. In short, I'm pretty optimistic about 2019. The players who should be sold are ones who we think we can do without next year, ones who have expiring contracts, or both.

How did that turn out?

So, not sure they waited too long to pull the trigger. More, they didn't get what they thought was fair value.

laloesch Verified Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 agreed. And like I've said and I'm sure others feel as well, it's nothing personal with Paul I just don't like him as Twins manager same with Gardy.

This was another time they should of pulled the trigger and the reason why I have mentioned in previous posts that Dozier is not going anywhere now due to his performance this year.
clone52 Verified Member Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 You're right about Kepler, 'tanked' doesn't really apply to him. But as Dick Bremer was alluding to during the broadcast, when a player reach's the 1,200 AB threshold, you either expect to see some improvement or is that all he is. Max's splits are certainly different from previous years, but overall he's no more productive than ever. Whether it's coaching, player development or scouting, Max and the players listed above along with Lynn & Odorizzi are all having the worst years of their respective careers by almost every metric. This can't just be coincidence or hard luck. Stop lumping Kepler in with the rest. He's not having his worst season by any freaking metric. He's literally having the same season he's had the last 2 years. Blame scouting all you want on Buxton and Sano, but I'm guesisng every other team would have handled them both about the same way. Morrison is having a bad year, but at least they were smart enough to give him a 1 year deal, not a 3 or 4 year deal. Dozier has always been streaky.

He's slightly worse than he was last year at this time. 50 points of OPS at the 100 game mark isn’t trivial or SSS. He had a slightly down year last year, even if he does go on a binge, it’s very likely he’ll be under .800 for this season Dozier doesn’t field well enough to get a longer term contract hitting .750 -.775. Most teams have a Gordon type SS who won’t quite hack it at SS in their upper minors. If he doesn’t pick it up, he could be looking at a 1 year make good contract this offseason.

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Hopefully tonight's start gave the Yankees reasons to call the Twins about Gibson.I know it seems unlikely that the Yankees would offer Sheffield for Gibson at this point, but if they did -- should we be worried about Sheffield? He's not some faraway asset, he's right on the doorstep of MLB. Would be a little concerning that the Yankees wouldn't just promote him themselves, you know? They haven't been shy about being aggressive with prospects before -- like Severino and Loaisiga from their current staff.

Yes, when a team seems to be pushing a prospect as trade bait, it always gives me pause.

Major League Ready Verified Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 There are so many things wrong with the idea of trading Gibson to the Yankees right now, I don’t know where to begin. You can start with explaining how you know this without knowing the return. You can add how we are going to compete with several teams that are positioned to be great for the next several years without adding talent that will be here for several years. If you don't look beyond next year, I understand how you can immediately dismiss trading Gibson. Thankfully, our CBO has pledged to build a sustainable winner. If an offer comes along that offers a good probability of achieving that status, Falvey/Lavine will take it. Fan's who don't like it will curse them and claim they don't care about winning just like they did when Cuddyer was not resigned. Of course, the comp pick (Berrios) is to our chances of becoming a contender.
