Out of curiosity, how did he qualify as an international signing? Born in Canada and a Canadian citizen.

 

he was raised in the Dominican....still not sure how it works, exactly.

Dominican citizenship, if I recall.

The only reference I could find was an article that stated, although he was born in Canada, he's spent most of his life in the Dominican Republic.

He was born in Canada because his dad was playing there at the time. But I think they later made their permanent home in the Dominican. As long as he didn't go to school in the US or Canada, he wouldn't be subject to the draft. (Not sure if the cutoff is high school or a certain age -- presumably Bryce Harper's parents would know, as undoubtedly they researched the possibility back in the day!)

I'm going to feel old when Vlad Jr. and Fernando Tatis Jr. make their MLB debuts.

Just think how old you'll feel in 25 years when Vlad Guerrero III makes his debut.

Super hazy memory here... Was he the kid that tried running out to grab the bat while there was a close play at home plate?

Nope, that was Dusty Baker's kid. (Who I think was drafted by the Nats but isn't really a prospect).

The only thing that would have made that even better would be if he would've dropped to a knee, and the ball would have bounced before he hit it. That being said, that was no cheap HR.

I remember when I heard Delino DeShields was playing for Texas and my first thought was "Delino DeShields is still playing??" Then I realized it was his son...yes, I did feel old.

At least the father/son DeShields have 24 years separating them in age, and the elder didn't hang on very long (retired at age 33). The elder was mostly an exclusive 2B too, while the younger has been an exclusive OF in MLB. Played with different franchises as well.

 

On the other hand, the father/son Eric Young's were/are maddening to me -- only 18 years difference in age, and the elder played to age 39. Exact same positions (2B/OF), and both played 5 years with the Rockies too. Their pro careers actually overlapped by 3 years, although it was another 3 years until the younger made the majors. Not to mention, the word "young" is right there in their names! :)

It's lame we'll have to wait 2-3 weeks to see him in Toronto. Steamer, Depth Charts, etc. project him to be a 4-5 WAR player... As a 19 year old!

Yeah, team manipulating service time should be addressed in the next CBA. Toronto visits MN in April and he probably won't be on the roster at that time.

The Blue Jays can keep him under 1 year service time by calling him up as early as April 12. (There are 171 days from April 12 through their final scheduled game of 2019 on Sep. 29. And a player needs 172 days for a full year of service time.)

 

The Blue Jays don't visit Target Field until April 15-18. So we could see Vlad Jr. for that series, barring injury, if the Jays give him the Kris Bryant treatment.

Actually Vlad Jr. turns 20 before the season starts in March. (Although he probably could have performed pretty well last year too.)

Very high potential there for sure. Only drawback I can see in him is that he seems to be developing a body like Sano.  Hope he doesn't get to big so he can still play 3rd.

I hope he debuts in Minneapolis, but at this point, with that team, I'm guessing they don't rush him back to debut on the road in the cold. The Jays next series after that is in Oakland, and then they return home the following week.
