goulik Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 All along The FO has been saying "Contollable" and yet we did not get that in this week moves. I say yet... Here's what I'm seeing: Gibson has never met his potential and some team is going to think they can fix him. I'm shopping thatWe have 5 catchers on the 40 and someone will want one of them. I'm shopping Murphy, Gimenez, Recker as backups. We have two utility infielders and with Polanco, the 3 are splitting the short stop position Gordon is wanting to claim. I'm talking to teams about all 3 and Dozier. Someone needs to leave and make room for the future.I'm willing to listen to anyone interested in Rosario, Granite, or Grossman. Ok, so most of that is going too bring back anything too exciting but can it get a good controllable relief pitcher? Sure. Prospects gained can also be packaged and flipped. But I also see the FO setting themselves up with the flexibility to do these things. I think it's gonna be a fun weekend waiting too see who blinks and what will be coming our way. Something will happen.
kab21 Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 I also think an infielder should be traded if the deal is right. My thought is Escobar since he has the positional flexibility to fit for many teams as opposed to Dozier only fitting on 2B needy teams. But the big if still belongs to the long term plans for Gordon. Is he trade bait that lands a good starter? Or is he the long term starter at SS?
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Brad Hand falls into the category of a controllable asset. I don't think any of the players you mentioned would be of much interest to the Padres besides Jorge Polanco, and I don't want to give him up. They would probably be wanting a higher upside prospect to go along with the MLB ready guys you listed.

He just hasn't been that amazing defensively or offensively, and obviously he has more potential, but you have to give to get. Escobar would be a good SS started in my opinion.

Escobar would be a good SS started in my opinion.I don't think Escobar can handle SS full time, so it would be a lot of Adrianza. Polanco's value is at it's lowest point, and I don't want to trade what should hopefully be 5 years of a starting middle infielder for 2 years of a relief pitcher.
Shaitan Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 If they trade Escobar, there isn't a remotely capable bat on the bench.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 If they trade Escobar, there isn't a remotely capable bat on the bench. Garver. Garver should be that guy, soon, I hope.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Sure, every guy mentioned in the OP should be shopped. Will they actually get moved? Doubtful. I'd venture to guess Escobar because of the positional flexibility, and Rosario are the most interesting players other teams will call about.

I agree that other teams would be most interested in those two (I think they believe Kepler cost would be too high) and they think Polanco at best is a utility infielder. Maybe the Twins could sell some team on Dozier being a DH/2B but not sure what that would get us in return. And for me we would need a ton in return for Dozier because moving him pretty much means we have 4 holes in our batting lineup, unless of course Buxton comes back on a ball of fire.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Not much value in a hitter at a non-defensive position....as we already saw with the Tigers' trade. Not sure I understand why, when it is a rental....

Something will happen.Kyle Gibson will be 30 in 3 months. If any GM's are looking at him, it is for what he has shown he is at this point. They are no longer looking at unfulfilled potential anymore. I'm not sure I've ever seen another player come through here with a belief of higher potential held onto for this long. Hell, even Delmon Young was only 26 before everyone realized he was who he was. (By the way, Delmon is STILL only 2 years older than Kyle, anyone still holding out hope on him? )
Dman Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Esco and Dozier are both Free Agents in 2019. They don't have to be traded by the deadline but if I was the front office I would try and structure something around those two to get some pitching help. I don;t think anyone will give much of anything for Granite as he profiles as a 4th outfielder right now. I don't see the Twins shopping Grossman or Rossario as they have both for several more years and I don't see other teams being willing to give up enough and or be interested in either one as they both have their flaws. I wish we could unload a catcher or two not named Garver and get anything for them but again I doubt other teams value any of them. We just don't have any\many guys that anything but MLB average to trade right now that I can see. I am with Mike. Unless they are trading prospects I don't see any trading for this team at the deadline.

Oldgoat_MN Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Adrianza is the guy we should be shopping. He has positional flexibility, a reputation as an excellent fielder and is hitting far better than he ever has. If a team wants to keep him he is arb eligible for 2018.He is having a career year. See if we can get something for it.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 I don't see Gibson netting anything. I'm not a fan of trading Esco. I would flip Dozier for pitching help that will be around for a few years or ML ready pitching. I wouldn't be surprised if Giminez could net something, but I doubt it's much. I'm guessing the Recker add is b/c they think they can move someone (hopefully not named Garver).

I think it's gonna be a fun weekend waiting too see who blinks and what will be coming our way. Something will happen. On Gibson I agree. The Twins may be dangling him as a fixer-upper, like Alex Meyer. Is there some relatively simple way to make him a better pitcher? Juggling a soccer ball? Pilates? Ninja training? A different grip on his slider? Some major league coach will say, "Yes, I can fix Kyle Gibson and turn him into an 18-game winner." I have always thought Gibson had the potential to be a front line starter, but never got there, for some reason. Maybe the only way we'll ever find out is if he escapes the Twins system. This team has had a ton of bad results in developing starting pitchers. Would the Rays have done a better job with Gibson? Would they have even picked him? Seems like the Twins have had good luck mostly with pitchers that already knew how to pitch coming into their system, guys like Blyleven, Viola, and lately Berrios. Maybe that's a clue...draft pitchers that already have an advanced approach, not just flamethrowers. That high 90's high school kid may light up the radar, but can he attack the zone with a deceptive mix? Can he adapt during a game? If the Twins were really good at developing pitchers, why is Kohl Stewart treading water in AA? And yet, right beside him is Stephan Gonsalves, a guy that has always been a pitcher. Gonsalves is ready to hit the bigs, while Stewart's future is anybody's guess. I was a fan of Gibson's when he first came up, but at this point I could see him as trade bait. I would still want something significant in return, but it does look like the man could use a fresh start. Like Alex Meyer, maybe some pitching coach can fix him with relative ease. Meanwhile, make room for Gonsalves.

Twins have Vielma and Gordon knocking on the door, so Adrianza doesn't figure into the long term plan. Neither does Dozier, but I doubt the team can do that deal during the season.

Shaitan Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 But they have to carry 3 C if he's the "bench bat," right? Otherwise, Castro can never leave a game when Garver is playing LF, 1B, DH, or PH.
Shaitan Verified Member Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 I'd rather have Esco than Garver for that. I'd rather have Garver than Giminez as backup catcher.

If they carry three catchers, and Garver is one, Garver plays A LOT more than if they carry two catchers. I want Garver playing more this year. It's fairly clear they are setting him up to be not just a catcher, given his playing time this year.

DH to C means the pitcher bats.

Good guy to have around, but I don't he's best suited to have an every day position.
