Gimenez vs Garver

27 plate appearances. OK.

Sure.  Still a fact.  Feel free to check the career numbers as well.

Mauer reached base 7 times today.  Don't those 7 PAs matter, because they are just seven?

Let me throw some cold water on this discussion.  Castro and Giminez are framing Santana, Santiago, and Berrios really well.  Not so well - Hughes, Gibson, and others.   I am fed up with the framing crap.  Santana is doing what he did last year, Santiago is doing what he has done the last few years, and Berrios is doing what we all expected.  The rest of the starters - yuck.  I hope Mejia addresses that.

Bring up Garver.  He deserves the chance.

I agree with the first paragraph.  I would bring Garver up in Sept. unless an injury occurs before.

Because two years from now, no one will remember Giminez.

Au contrere. I'll remember him. Hell, I still remember Bruce Look.

I think with the current situation Garver getting regular at bats in AAA is more beneficial than bringing him up to get into a game or two each week. If he is the Twins future, then he needs to get a lot of PT.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Things are going well so why tinker with success?

And next year? Keep him down again, so he gets regulate at bats?

Garver has two more options after this year. I'm starting to hope he stays down the whole time (getting regular at bats) just for the sake of the reactions.

Right now the Twins aren't pretenders. We'll know a lot more in a month and probably know definitively by the trade deadline. It's not the lineup--it's pitching and depth that concern me.

For me it comes down to the question of who give the Twins a better chance to win games, Garver or Gimenez? I think the answer is Garver.

I think Falvey and Levine are very confident it is Gimenez. Anyone calling for their removal?

I have no idea why wanting to make a roster move to replace the backup catcher would ever be considered as equivalent to wanting to remove Falvey and Levine.

Moderator's note: It's standard for fans to speculate about alternatives. If you don't care for that kind of discussion there are other threads.

Yes. That statement was unnecessary. The back up catcher does not appear to be very critical. However, this is the only roster spot they chose to overhaul in their first winter. They must have a vision of what they need from a catcher that is different from many on this board. That vision appears fundamental to their beliefs about roster construction.

There is a lot of season left. There may be some things they need to see from Garver or Murphy before bringing them up. Gimenez may be a necessary place holder in their minds.

Or, they inherited a roster without any viable catchers to open 2017 in MLB?

Plenty of evidence that they like Castro and Gimenez but let's be careful not to overstate it!

No, next year he starts and hits a buck 90

I would imagine it comes down to this for the Twins as well.

Third year pitchers are young? How long are MLB players lacking experience?

If I'm not mistaken, this is Rogers' second season and the start of Duffey's third, but at this point, he has something approximating less than 2 full season's.

So yeah, still young. And personally, I don't think of second year guys at 26 as being old.

Just saying.

Gimenez is a career 259/356/392 hitter v. LHP. More than capable of mixing and matching with Castro back there. Why would you compare AAA to MLB numbers, anyway?

As long as the Twins are competitive, I would stick with the veteran catchers. There is no way to measure how much Gimenez helped Mejia get through 5 innings today but I don't think Suzuki would have managed it.

Both Gimenez and Castro have better arms, better gloves, better framing, and do a better job trapping bounced curve balls in front of them than Kurt Suzuki. They both also have better pop in their bats.

As for Garver, he is intriguing with that bat, but maybe not enough to risk a drop in defensive quality. If the Twins continue to fall behind in the Central, then it won't matter. At that point, bring up Garver, waive Gimenez, and see what the young man's got.

I think he becomes a trade chip in a package a little later on.  A solid backup with occasional pop- what contender would say no to that for the stretch run?

By all accounts, he's a heck of a teammate and clubhouse presence.  You need that particularly with a bunch of youngsters, when you hit a slide like this.

Not sure I agree with the assessment of Castro's blocking abilities. I've looked at the numbers, he has considerably more wild pitches and passed balls on his watch than Suzuki did. Suzuki was very good at blocking.

You also may recall Castro's two run passed ball earlier this year.

Garver v. Gimenez is a false dilemma. Few thought Garver would be with the team in 2017, and few think Gimenez will be with the team after 2017.

Garver moving around at Rochester is really smart. If he can play a little left and first, he should be up much sooner.

Which makes you wonder why it's just now happening
