On April 23, 2014 Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks played a rehab game with the Pawtuckett Red Sox against the Rochester Red Wings. Alex Meyer was the pitcher. Meyer pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits, 3 walks, 0 runs and recorded 11 strikeouts. After the game Middlebrooks, who struck out 3 times, was quoted as saying, "They have 5 guys in Minnesota who are better than that?"

 

I fully expect Meyer to go out and pitch a great game for the Angels someday. And I will really be surprised if it happens more than twice.

I think this is an example of how moderation created an issue (and continues to create an issue) where there was none. Spycake explained himself well and I admitted that I might even give the same analysis of an outing. Good job at creating an issue.

Like clockwork Meyer held the Twins to a single run over 6 innings.

If Meyer could have gone one more scoreless inning against the Twins I believe he would have gotten his ERA for the season under Santiago's.

 

It will be interesting to see how Meyer does with an extended opportunity at the the big league level. I was always a bit frustrated that the Twins were unwilling to give him a long look, especially in the years when the team was terrible.

True, but the Twins had him on the ropes early and most teams would have scored more.  The Twins had runners on the corners with nobody out in the 3rd and came away with zero runs.  Most teams put up a crooked number there.

 

I see you've still got Aaron Hicks' picture up.  What were your other choices?  JJ Hardy or David Ortiz?  Listen man, we all know the Twins have been making awful trades lately.  But at some point we have to let these things go and move on.

I agree I would take Meyer as my 5th starter over a lot of what the team has.  However, if you are going to praise Meyer I think Mejia deserves some praise for putting up basically the same stat line last night.  

 

I would probably like to have Meyer over Santiago in the long run, but that isn't happening anymore.  Meyer was the cost of getting rid of Nolasco unfortunately.  It think the Twins have the beginning of what could be a good #1/#2 in Berrios and #4/#5 in Mejia.  They just need to fill in the blanks now.

I have been praising Mejia! He has looked excellent his last few starts and looks to be a real solid back end piece for us. In fact as of today I would rank our rotation as:

Hopefully the Twins can find another Nunez for Mejia type of trade this year at the deadline. Escobar should have similar or better value and amazingly MI is a Twins strength with a few okay prospects in the minors.

1.  The Meija/Nunez trade should be praised.  If the current regime could cash in say Grossman in the same way this year, I'd be okay with that.  Last night was a good showcase of a great success for the Twins, but also, to an extent, their failure to develop Meyer.

2.  Watching on Gameday, Meyer seemed to have excellent command of his curveball last night, and seemed to throw it a lot.  Not sure what it looked like, but he seemed to have pretty good control.  My impression was that Polanco and Rosario (and of course Buxton) missed out on some opportunities to cash in.

3.  We'd all love if the Twins could acquire a guy like Dyson and turn him around.  If we did, I'm sure the Ranger fans would lament their FO's ineptitude.  Baseball...

4.  The few times MLB TV cut to the game while Meyer was pitching, nothing about his "mound presence" screamed top of the rotation starter.  He looked like a big, goofy guy (nice I'm sure) tinkering in his garage, legs awkwardly sticking out from underneath the '65 Mustang he's trying to convert to solar power.  For now, he's got that puppy running, but I'm not so sure he can keep it running.  I like solar power, though, so I pulling for him.

5.  As some above posters predicted, Sano hit one of his fastballs a long way.  Not having a healthy Sano was a major factor in the team's lack of mojo against Houston, imo.  Big notch in his MVP case, if I was a voter.

I guess I should give props to Rosario for finally coming through, though.  He had his chances, and in a typical day at the baseball office, came through on one of them.  Same for Castro.  Good for them.  Another 15 inning game at the start of a West Coast road trip would have really enhanced the Twins frequent flyer miles.

 

That's what winners do.  Wasn't happening too much last year.

It seemed like every time there was an opening, such as a pitcher going on the DL, Meyer was hurt. Or, when he did pitch, he was just all over the place, too often. Actually, last night when I tuned in to watch, it seemed like he had no command; but apparently he did well enough when I wasn't looking to get batters to swing ineffectively.

 

I would have still hung onto him, when I heard about the trade, but I accepted that the evaluators had concluded they would never be able to tap his potential. If the Angels do tap that potential, then I hope FalVine have been given the history and know whom to let go when they clean house. It's looking like a bad outcome.

Yeah Meyer, Hicks etc shows a real lack of patience with prospects/youngsters. It's bad enough when that happens, but on a rebuilding team? That is inexcusable.

Meyer yesterday in his second start vs. the Tigers in 2017: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 run (unearned), 4 BB, 9 K, 1 HBP.  I think that counts as "fairly effective."

 

MLB career high 101 pitches (59 strikes). Highest pitch total anywhere since May 2015 at Rochester.

 

Still doesn't know how to win, though, as he took the loss while the Angels offense was shut out.

I like the subtle adjustment the Angels found to allow Meyer to control his pitches... pound his glove just before release. Who'd a thunk?

Another shakier outing vs the Yankees: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 5 K. Although only 2 runs charged to Meyer (helped by a reliever who stranded 2 inherited runners to end the 5th). All 5 hits he allowed were singles.

 

Meyer struck out the mighty Aaron Judge twice before walking him in his final inning (Judge later homered off an Angels reliever).
