Wow, Gardy fired and then Ryan. Let's not just make a trade to trade though, cough cough, Bill Smith. I really don't think Molitor is all that safe either, he has no idea how to handle the bullpen.

Is the internet broken yet?

It will be. What's the record for most pages of posts on a thread? We're well on our way to shattering that record with this topic.

Never thought it would happen, I thought before that would ever happen Trump would be nominated for Pres! But like all things Twins, there is the other shoe which dropped! Rob Anthony. Not only don't the Twins go outside the orginization, they don't even go outside the executive bathrooms when looking for replacements. The new GM was likely hired standing at the men's facilities? :(.

Good luck to Mr. Ryan. Getting fired sucks, but he seems like a level headed guy with a good support structure.

I hope we find out from the owners why this was done, at least somewhat....I'm curious on the direction now.

Yeah, it's never ideal, but Ryan was the oldest GM in the game...sort of one of those "forced retirement" type of deals.

I'm certainly intrigued to listen to the inevitable press conference. The timing of this is strange right before the trade deadline. I think diehardtwinsfan is on to something about TR potentially unwilling to sell over the next couple of weeks.

I think Molly is safe until the end of the season, I don't believe Antony will can him. I think they'll end up hiring a replacement for Antony after the season and a new FO will likely move on from Molitor.

At least that's what I'm hoping will happen anyway.

To be fair, Antony has never gotten a chance to call the shots, he deserves his chance, the next(((((((( 17 YEARS))))) are a good audition  period for him to "earn" consideration for the full time role. Ideally he makes some aggressive trades (Sano, Buxton, Berrios untouchable) everyone else? Fair game.

. FTFY. :)

I think a LOT of this has to do with the following two things that have come up in the last couple weeks:

1. Sano has proven to be a damn fine 3rd baseman.

2. Park has proven to be a bust (so far)

Moving Sano to RF ultimately sealed Ryan's fate.

One thing I do see is that should be a pretty clear indication that they need to sell.  This strikes me as an odd time to do this unless TR was pushing back against deadline selling.  Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. What would cause them to make this decision so close to the trade deadline, something that is incredibly important to a GM? There had to be some disagreement there, in my opinion.

I heard Ryan on Inside Twins on Sunday morning... something with his voice and in his delivery made it sound as if he knew this was coming. He seemed more agitated than normal about the lack of Twins' offense the Friday and Saturday games after the All-Star Break, and was short with Atteberry (or maybe it was Provus) when talking about upcoming trade possibilities. He was really harsh on Sano's defense at third base, almost trying to shift blame to Miguel and deflect any criticism about Ryan signing another DH and keeping Plouffe that necessitated Sano's adventures in right.

If Ryan did know ahead of time, I'll say it was classy of the Twins to wait until after the Hall of Fame weekend to do it. Torii Hunter was a fan of Ryan's - even saying he would have possibly resigned in '08 had it been Ryan doing the negotiating, and not Bill Smith. The Twins don't make it a habit of firing management in the middle of a season, so this is a big step.

Regarding Antony - someone had to be named the interim GM, Antony is as good as anyone.  That doesn't mean he's even in consideration for the full time job, let alone a lock for it.  Let's not make assumptions we have no basis for.

Did Ryan want to trade players and the Pohlads wanted to keep things together for next year, or vice versa?

I'm leaning towards vice versa, but we'll see how it plays out over the next couple of weeks.

To be fair, Antony has never gotten a chance to call the shots, he deserves his chance, the next 3 months are a good audition  period for him to "earn" consideration for the full time role. Ideally he makes some aggressive trades (Sano, Buxton, Berrios untouchable) everyone else? Fair game.

Fair point about not knowing exactly how Antony will operate. I just view it as a typical Twins move, which is keeping the status quo and going with the comfortable option. I also kind of nervous to see how the trade deadline plays out now. Maybe it's an old wound from the Bill Smith era, but if Antony starts cleaning out the prospects acquired over the past few years I'm fairly certain I'll pick up my pitchfork and lead the mob.

Holy crap. I did not see this coming.

I won't celebrate, though I think this is the right decision. For whatever you want to say about Ryan, he was a class act and held a life-long dedication to the franchise, serving it for over three decades. That deserves a tip of the cap.

But now it's time to move on. Given how this is a midseason move - a rarity in MLB - I think it's a clear sign ownership plans to clean house. If they wanted to pass the torch to Antony, they could have let Ryan finish out the season and bow out gracefully.

This is a statement move. I expect a top-to-bottom cleaning of the franchise, though I question Molitor's fate, given how he's buddy-buddy with the Pohlads.

You don't think this is just an interim replacement? Who else were they going to hire mid season? I doubt they were conducting an intensive search during the first half.

They did what most of us wanted them to do and probably sooner than we thought, but we still need to complain?

If they keep Antony beyond the end of the season, you can kick me in the nuts when I actually meet you.

Hopefully the next GM is someone who has never been associated with "Twins Baseball" in any way, shape or form.

I saw all I needed to see of Antony during Spring Training of 2014 when the Twins rolled into the season with the most inexplicable 25 man roster I've ever seen.

On reflection, I would guess this has been on ice for a while and wanted to wait until after the hall of fame stuff this weekend.

Agree with you 100%.  Doing it in season more than likely means big changes are coming.

Right but how often is a GM fired midseason with an outside candidate waiting in the wings to step in? There's no reason to assume Antony is more than interim, and it's not like the position can remain vacant for half a season

Definitely thought this was a hoax at first.

Thanks for all of your efforts and dedication, Terry. Best of luck.

I did too.  I checked like 7 sources, including the Twins Twitter feed, before I could believe it.  I avoid Twitter as if it were the plague, but that was my final confirmation.

I too wish Terry the best.  It's never fun to see people get fired.

I'm not sure he's proven that quite yet....

One thing to keep in mind is that the Twins need permission from another team to speak to a potential candidate.

And if you approach say, the Dodgers, midseason and say you want to speak to their assistant GM about a job, it's likely they'll tell you to go **** yourself and call back in November.

I honestly thought the comments would be more explosive...

Everyone is in shock.  Sit tight and hang around a while.

I would have liked this, but the last sentence seemed extreme, even for a Canadien! :).
