About time to extend Grossman?

So, anyone else concerned we will be hearing about a 3 year $24 million extension for Grossman after reading today's quote from TR :

"Not too long ago, somebody gets in touch with me and our scouting department and said Robbie Grossman would be OK,” Ryan said. “So we signed him and we were rewarded. These are types of things I need to be doing."

Seems like he fits the mold and we'd hate to have to "overpay" at the end of the year, right? I mean he's had like 2 or 3 good games already, he must be a savior.

Sorry, couldn't resist...

This can't be a real quote from Ryan.

Is this from the onion?

I guess his belief in extremely small sample sizes shouldn't be a surprise given some of their other decisions.

Pfft. I have Grossman penciled in as the Twins lone All Star representative.

I had turned to my friend while watching the game and said the same thing.

Seriously though:

No one is expecting an All-Star year from this guy, but ,hey...

I hope Robbie has a career year! So far (in both games) it's been nice to have him.

I hope TR didn't hurt himself patting himself on his back so hard.

I had to go read the entire article in the Trib because anytime you read quotes... you have to take them with a grain of salt because I know first hand that they can end up being presented 180 degrees different than meant and that sort of thing happens a lot.

But...

I'd have to assume that Lavelle and Terry have enough experience with each other that those types of things would have to be corrected by now.

Jeez... I don't know.

The quote sure doesn't build confidence in the man in charge... It leaves more questions than answers... It scares me that more Grossman types are on the way?

Is there one, just one media-type in this town who is willing to take off his sycophant shades, for just one moment, and finally once and for all announce to the world that "The Emperor Has No Clothes."

Expect a few more lackluster TR performances and then the obligatory 'shoulder fatigue' diagnosis

On the way? I can just imagine what his dumpster diver strategic bulletin board must look like right about now... (Big and colorful circles, squiggles and arrows, with "Twins Way Wannabe", "Better than his Numbers" and "Really Gets After It" scribbled alongside his ultimate favorite potential castoffs...)

Hey, I'm sure Terry is just drooling at the prospect that just as soon as we have overall last place secured from the Braves, the Twins will have first dibs on every reject, rehab and reclamation recruit from the 29 other clubs. Then he can really start "sending messages".

I love this thread for a number of reasons:

We're setting records for allowable snark in a thread.

Taking Terry Ryan's comment to the extreme.

The fact we are so fed up with how this team is run, we're all convinced rex grossman will be a starter in 2017 based on 2 games.

I gave up on the forums as anything other than a generic "old man yells at cloud" sports site a long time ago.

I knew you cashed it in, just didn't want to say anything.

Well,

Both LaVelle and Berardino have the same quotes today.

After reading both... I think it's quite possible that Terry Ryan walked into the press box on purpose.

Thanks a lot. I just spit water all over my computer and keyboard. Can we be a little more careful about the threads we start on this site. A person can only take so much. ;)

I would prefer to hear "I screwed up last winter. We'll do what we can to throw a few tourniquets on the multiple gushing wounds for now, but I need to start building the 2017 team. Between now and Opening day, my job is to put a much more talented team on the field."

When you consider that over the last 6 years, with the exception of last May, this team has a 340-486 record it is kind of surprising that there are still any old men around to do any yelling!

To me (and others on this site), it was pretty obvious we were below average in offense, defense and pitching going into the season.  While this record is worst than I imagined, it shouldn't be a surprise we are bad at all three aspects of the game.  Yet Mr. Ryan finds it hard to figure that the Twins have been struggling in all aspects.  I'm curious what aspects of the game he legitimately thought we'd be good at.

Be nice if we didn't have to add lack of fundamentals to the mix as well, but we have.  I didn't see so much of that coming and perhaps that's why it's even worse than expected.

That quote is partway to rectifying this appalling Twins' situation- it needs to be coupled with a renewed ticket sale boycott followed by the proverbial Owner's "Vote of Confidence."

You guys are funny.  I'm not seeing an issue here.  Ryan sends out feelers, get's a response that Grossman would be "OK".  Ryan signs Grossman and for 2 games, produces.  That's better than the superstar, can't miss, savior of the Twins many here have been clamoring for.

It's clear that the signings of Grossman and Mastroianni is a pull back from prospects that just aren't ready yet.  I can understand giving Sano more rope, but his stats over the past 15 games are not good, either.

Or is it we're anti-productive outfielders?     :th_alc:

Maybe its let's wait more than 2 or 3 games before we declare him a productive outfielder?

I would expect this sort of extreme small sample size bias from a fan, but coming from our GM is extremely disturbing.

What bugs me about that comment isn't the back-patting, it's the fact that he feels the move has paid off after two games.

How about: "We heard about Grossman and have kept our eye on him.  We hope he can show us more of what he has the first two games, but we're a long way from where we need to be even if he continues to contribute"

Two solid games doesn't make for a good move, it may still turn out to be one, but we're a long way from being as conclusive as he sounded in that quote.

What it tells me is that the system is screwed up, there IS a system failure, when you can go outside the organization and find some discards who perform better than ANYONE in the current system.

So in the great Minnesota Twins pecking order, Grossman is NOW HIGH UP THERE! Where does he slot...right behind Sano and above Park and Mauer and waaaaay above anyone trying to get a job in the majors from the minors?

When the guy isn't even the 26th man, let alone the 41st man on at least two teams coming out of spring training, you reap praises on him? Shades of Jordon Schafer or Shane Robinson or any other plug that Ryan has found in the past.

Forget about drafting and paying out monies. Just stay home. And every fall go thru the major league slush pile or purchase the discarded players of other organizations. Fine if you are an indy league ball team. But you want to compete, put major league product into a dazzling Target Field, you do have to draft, develop, train.

Something is not right about what this thread is representing to us Twins fans.

Your conclusion concerning Ryan's "conclusiveness" still reeks of an element of back-patting. (In a kind of pathetic and "I feel sorry for him that the game has passed him by" sort of way).

Is this a surprise.  Since TR has come back the prospects have regressed and the replacement level player has thrived (thrived is a relative term on a 11 - 30 team).  TR loves those old vets.  Just like TR, they come in serve a purpose, give us a few shining moments, take the teams money, and leave us in last place.

they needed a spark.  they got that and a badly needed with.  I'll take that.

What about Centeno (sp?)?!?!?! Catcher could be solved long term and there are sharks in the water just waiting to steal him!

I don't mind a mildly positive comment about any player on the team and I'm definitely not going to get out of shape because TR called Grossman "OK." What I can't stand, however, are the constant public call-outs of developing players, like TR's recent comments in Berardino's Twitter about Kepler and Buxton. No player has ever gotten better because he read a snarky comment from management to Berardino, LEN3, Souhan or anyone else. It has a 100% "not-effective" score, but it seems to be a constant part of the Twins' player development culture.
