Tonkin Optioned. Who Replaces Him? It's Meyer!

...and Twins say they'll make the corresponding move before Friday's game in an NL park. I can't imagine it is for a hitter seeing as they're losing the DH. Is it time for Mr. Meyer? Any other guesses?

TWINS OPTION TONKIN
Club to Make Corresponding Move Prior to Friday’s Game

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they optioned right-handed pitcher Michael Tonkin to Triple-A Rochester.  The Twins will announce a corresponding move prior to Friday’s game in Milwaukee.

Tonkin, 25, has made 16 appearances in three stints with the Twins this season, posting a 5.73 ERA (11.0 IP, 7 ER) with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

AM I missing something obvious?

IDK about Meyer.  But I might be changing my mind.  So, IDK about WHAT????

Anyway, sorting out his MiLB stats by Game Log, in 8 games he's averaged 1.9 inning:  2 3 inning games and 1 of 4 innings.  So, relieving AND stretching out??

I still DK.....

I'd put money on any veteran over any rookie.......big money.

Define "veteran" and I'll take that bet.

The other option could be a left-hander, like Taylor Rogers. But all the left-handers on the 40-man roster are also already on the 25-man roster.

Rogers is scheduled to start tonight, so I guess we'll soon know if he's an option, but based on Ryan's history, that's not going to happen.

I guess it won't be Hicks, the Twins website says he is going to Rochester for rehab. I really would like the team to add another hitter. Something that seems to work against Tonkin is that he doesn't go more than an inning, while Pressly (and Graham for that matter) have gone multiple innings. The LH portion of the bullpen, not counting Perkins, is the weak link of the bullpen.

T-Bar is definitely one "veteran" who must be on the short list.  Phil Coke is another.

I believe that Logan Darnell and Caleb Thielbar are still on the 40 man roster.  That being said, my guess is either A.J. Achter or Alex Meyer.

I don't think inclusion on the 49-man should be a prerequisite, I see some spots that could be replaced.

I feel as if Tonkin just won't work in Minnesota, unless the Twins change the size of the leash, can't give him 5 innings and get mad if he struggles.

As for the call-up my guess is Thielbar or Meyer, unless they call up a Sano or a Kepler for a few games? IDK, they'll probably call someone up just to call someone up

Still under 2 years service time, so is that a veteran?

I would be pretty surprised if they rolled with 3 mediocre LHPs (aside from Perkins) but their bullpen roster management has left something to be desired. If they were bringing back Thielbar I would guess they would option Thompson.

Not to speak for Mike, but I'm guessing he was referring to guys awaiting their first call-ups.

Regarding Thompson, replacing him with T-Bar makes the most sense.  I still think they would first look outside the organization, quite a few LHP on the wire at the moment, plus they might pull off a minor trade for someone else's expendable arm.

Arcia isn't in the Red Wings lineup tonight, Santana is back at shortstop. Rogers is starting for Rochester.

Got to admit Arcia would be an unexpected curveball.

I don't think it would be another lefty. They would have moved Thompson or Duensing if that was the case. There isn't enough work for both of them now.

It think it will be a bat. No DH but pinch hitting and doubles switches require more of a bench. Maybe a short term call up for one of the AA guys until either Hicks or Santana is on the roster.

I'm going with a bat because starting pitching has given the Twins sufficient reason to drop a pitcher.

That said, I think there is a pitcher or two that is close to being DFA'd to make room for someone younger.

It looks to me like the Twins are trying to balance win this year with a youth movement.

So far, I think the Twins front office is doing a pretty good job.

I hope it is Arcia and that Arcia is here for the long haul. You need some home run potential in the line-up, both as a pinch hitter, and DH. Twins are very right handed in there line up right now, could use another lefty bat besides Rosario and the Joe.

Have a stretch of National league games but with all of the potential pinch hit situations for pitchers, to me it makes sense to go down to 12 pitchers and 13 position guys at this time.

Acia is sitting on the bench tonight.

Arcia's OPS in Rochester right now is .527.  I can see that getting him benched tonight, but not put on a plane tomorrow.  I sure wish he would get hot.

I'd like to see Oliveros, but he's been scuffling lately.

Pinto is still out.  Maybe Santana?

I am guessing Kepler will come up for the cup of coffee in NL parks, and they will option him to Rochester when the time comes.
