Tonkin Optioned. Who Replaces Him? It's Meyer!

Good move.

The experience these young players are getting while contending is invaluable. I didn't expect it this year. This is also Plouffe and Dozier first go around on a competitive major league team. I haven't looked but I don't think their teams were very successful in the minors either.

The younger players may end up costing them this year. They also have the upside that is hard to acquire. The experience will pay off in the future and maybe this year.

Didn't we have a crazy injury crunch when Polanco was first called up last year?  I think Santana, Nunez, and Plouffe were all hurt, so Escobar was starting at 3B, Florimon was back at SS, and I believe Polanco was the only other healthy infielder (other than Dozier) on the 40-man roster at that moment.

Yep, we had a temporary hole in the roster, as we do now.

This probably means Tonkins done around here for awhile.  Meyer just might stick, so let's see who's next to go down and come up.

and, that is why I don't bet on sports stuff......so much for my "big money".....

One by one, the Twins are (somewhat excruciatingly) showing that they are ready to move the roster-turnover process inexorably forward.  I'll take anything in this direction we can get.

Gotta hand it to TR and the Twins, they certainly appear to be going for it!

I just hope regardless of results this doesn't close the door on Meyer being a starting pitcher again.

It looks to me like any of the bottom half of the bully could be released/optioned--Thompson, Duensing, Meyer.

I doubt they will. They'll give him another shot.

There isnothing wrong with coming up fora spell. He can be the long man. Remember, someone named Santana was in the bullpen. Let's hope he isn't just a weakness. We already have Graham who is shining better than most Rule 5 back-of-the-bullpen guys. But have to say are still on the bubble withDuensing and Thompson for now. If he can throw heat!

I'll boldly forecast Thompson goes down after the Reds series, and Hicks is recalled. Then after the 4th Buxton is sent down to clear the spot for E. Santana, with Milone going to the pen.

I'll still take it

Outside of Perkins, he becomes the best Twins pitcher with shutdown stuff.

Don't see the point of Milone going to the pen. Not the kind of guy who will see his stuff play up enough.

I think Buxton stays no matter what is done, unless he really collapses at the plate.

This is correct. Can't think any team is in the business of calling up guys from A ball for a handful of games unless it is an unforeseen crunch.

Move Perkins to the left-handed setup role and install Meyer as the closer! (Mostly but not totally kidding.)

RHB vs Perkins .422 OPS

LHB vs Perkins .844 OPS

What's our temporary hole?  We have starters and backups at every position.  When Polanco first came up last year, we did not have a healthy backup infielder.

How soon do you think he'll pitch high leverage innings? I assume he is ahead of Boyer, but is he already ahead of Pressly? Won't be ahead of Fien anytime soon.

I don't think this is any indication of giving up on Meyer as a starter. The big club needs help, he can provide it while also giving  him the needed experience facing big league hitters. If anything this will be a good audition for him and hopefully prepares him to start next season. I'd have to think it's the plan in the short term.

It's been pleasant to see the club make necessary moves this season, I haven't agreed with all of them but I can't accuse them of sitting on their hands.

Bravo.

I am very curious to see how they use him. I hope that it is high-leverage situations rather than long-relief work, but I could see them easing him into the role with mop-up work.

A couple other random notes of interest:

-This season Meyer has had some platoon issues, so it will be interesting to see how much confidence they have in his ability to get LHB out.

-He has yet to pitch in back-to-back games, so he might have limited availability for a while.

-Hopefully they continue to use him in multiple innings as necessary (ex. put out a fire in the 6th and then pitch the 7th).

I hope he quickly establishes himself as a reliable, dominant late inning reliever and makes that decision really tough.

I think he'll be used similarly to how Boyer is right now.

I also hope this isn't the end of the bullpen repair, it's an excellent first step though.
