White Sox 10, Twins 1: Bailey Ober Bends, Bullpen Breaks In Blowout

Here we are again, with the Twins somehow still playing for their playoff lives despite not being able to sustain any level of consistent success. They turned to Bailey Ober Sunday night with the division-leading White Sox relying on a bullpen game.

Ober was in trouble immediately, allowing a leadoff double to Sam Antonocci. But he bore down, striking out the dangerous Miguel Vargas before retiring Munetaka Murakami and Andrew Benintendi to end the threat.

The second inning began with a strikeout to Colson Montgomery, but he would reach on a wild pitch. Braden Montgomery walked, then Ober went to work. He got Tristan Peters on a groundout, then got ahead of Chase Meidroth before getting five consecutive whiffs (one was a foul tip, to be fair) to pitch out of his second jam.

The Twins, meanwhile, were flailing away at opener Bryan Hudson’s Ober impression (He stands 6’8” with minimal velocity). Hudson faced the minimum through 1 ⅔ innings, then gave way to hard-throwing Jordan Hicks, who struck out three of the four hitters he faced.

The Sox got two men on in the third, but again, Ober pitched his best when he needed to, striking out Colson Montgomery on a nasty slider below the zone, moving his total number of stranded runners to five, with the White Sox 0-7 with runners in scoring position.

Sox lefty Hagen Smith took over for the fourth and was nails, striking out four in three perfect innings. He doesn’t throw that hard but has some great ride on his fastball at the top of the zone- you can see why the Sox called him up for the stretch run.

After an uneventful fourth, Ober allowed a second leadoff double to Antonocci in the fifth. This time, Murakami was able to scald a single into right field for the game’s first run, chasing Ober from the game. Kody Funderburk came on and quelled the threat.

He would not be so fortunate in the sixth. Peters, who has killed the Twins, delivered a left-on-left double down the line, prompting Derek Shelton to insert Andrew Morris. Morris walked Meidroth before retiring Teel on a grounder. But Antonocci grounded a ball through the drawn-in infield to score two. He would be credited with his third double, as the ball deflected slowly into center field. The Twins put Murakami on, and lefty-masher Randal Grichuk (who had pinch-hit for Benintendi earlier against Funderburk) managed to rope a single into left field to extend the lead to four.

Brooks Lee did deliver a long home run in the seventh off occasional closer Grant Taylor. Jeffers then walked, but the Twins wouldn’t be able to add any more traffic.

The White Sox had no such issues against Taylor Rogers. They loaded the bases on a single, hit-by-pitch and a walk, then Shelton went to Garrett Acton to clean up the mess. He did not, walking Vargas on four pitches to force in the fifth Sox run.

Acton has decent stuff, but he had no answers for the Sox lineup in the eighth. He allowed a leadoff homer to Grichuk (who went 2-2 with said homer and a walk), then walked both Montgomeries before Peters hit a ground-rule double to truly ice the game. Kyle Teel would later hit a three-run home run, in case anyone had any doubts.

Stuff I’m Tracking:

• Ober’s evolution into the second coming of Paul Byrd is going pretty good. His ability to command the baseball is well known, but being able to frustrate hitters by never throwing what the batter expects is the next level. Pitching against the American League’s best offense in a hitter’s park, I’ll take his performance today.
• Walker Jenkins sure has a lot more swing-and-miss in his game than anticipated. It probably is too soon to bench him, but it sure would be nice if he could make some good contact ahead in the count.
• Morris should be a big part of the bullpen next year. This year, he’s cooked, mentally.
• Eric Hosmer gets to work national TV broadcasts now? I was under the impression that nobody liked him after he wore out his welcome in San Diego.

What’s Next: The Twins head to Detroit for a three-game series with the Tigers. The Twins have not announced a starter, but it would figure to be Connor Prielipp’s turn—although his last start followed an opener with good success. They will have a rematch against the de facto ace of the Tigers, Troy Melton (7-4, 2.20 ERA), who they punished last week for five runs, including two home runs.

Difficult to expect a team that can’t win 50% of its games to suddenly start winning 70% to get into the playoffs.

19 games left and they’re 7 games under .500. They need to go 13-6 just to get back to .500 and that won’t get them in the playoffs. Playoffs will probably require 15-4.

My guess is they go 8-11 to finish 76-86.

This is a great time for Jenkins to fail - in games that seem to matter but actually don’t matter. Keep exposing his flaws to give him something tangible to work on over the winter.

This was also his issue when he first got to AAA last year. The thought that he could come up to the majors and immediately be a star without an adjustment period was always based on hope and not reality. This doesn't mean that he's bad, but it does suggest that keeping him in AAA would have been a good idea.

Kidding. It's been over for weeks. And it's not Bailey's fault. If anything, he gave more than I thought he could give.

Every team has tough decisions to make in an offseason, but the Twins probably have tougher decisions. Does Tom P. still feel he owes some hope to the fans? Does he bring it all back and hope for better health? Or does he tell Zoll to start the demolition process, which would mean selling low on Lopez and Ryan.

And do you even keep Zoll? Is it time for a new executive - one with a fresh vision for building a winner? But would a new person know enough about available free agents and/or trade targets to hit the ground running when the frenetic, post labor dispute transaction period finally begins?

The Twins could have been emerging from the 2026 season with an excellent grasp of their entire system and likely excellent draft position for '27. Instead, they're almost forced to be pretend contenders again - crossing their fingers once more for healthy seasons from an injury-prone roster - when and if next season gets underway.

I don't think it will happen, but if they were somehow in for a penny this year, they ought to be in for a pound come Spring.

He had nothing left to accomplish in AAA. It was time to bring him up. Failure is part of learning.

Abreu is going to be a free agent at the end of the year and adding one good reliever wouldn't change that much... we're still in mostly the same spot with that trade made.

If the trade is made TC is without Larnach, got a good reliever for him, and got rid of one of the many LH outfielders clogging the roster.  I say that is a better spot to be in then where they are with Larnach today.

NO!  YOU DO NOT KEEP ZOLL !!!!

This team has failed for several years now as a result of the bad team management.  We have had many good/great players pass through Target field.  But, to build those players into a complete, competitive team is the management's job.  They scout, they draft, they trade, they hire, they put together all the pieces.  And, hopefully they hired a good staff to train the players in a consistent, modern approach, from low A to MLB.  And, they have to get the right facilities and get the players all the modern tools they need to succeed.  All of this...is up to the GM and his staff. 

Do you think Zoll up to the task?

Well, lets look at it this way:  It is obvious that Falvey was not.  The Twins did not exactly flourish under his administration.  So, he get's canned and his sidekick takes his place.  Could Zoll change the organization for the better?  I don't think so because every move that Zoll has made is right out of the Falvey playbook.  So, Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.....So sad.  

If there is any single change that Mr. Pohlad needs to make, it is to install an experienced, professional management team to run one of his most valuable assets.  Sigh....we can hope!

Ugly terrible horrible loss-twins will have decisions to make this off season for sure. Zoll hasn’t done 💩Jeffers/larnach/bell are good as gone. Buxton injury is worse than what they say especially if he needs surgery. Let’s just hope twins can finish strong and somehow someway make a run for wild card. Next year and beyond will be better as we will have gained valuable experience playing meaningful games in September.

I am, by nature, an "it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings" optimist.  But, I concede that this loss broke my spirit. Has this team had its hot streaks, even against good teams?  Actually, they have.  Just not enough of them to call the Twins a good playoff team.  And, weirdly, some of those hot streaks were, indeed, on the road. 

Weak schedule the rest of the way be damned, I felt a series win in Chicago was essential.  We didn't have the talent to pull that off.  Yes, this is still technically meaningful September baseball, which was not true last year.  But.....please do not take that concession being the same as watching enjoyable baseball.

100% agree, this organization needs a an objective review  and overhaul.  The only way to accomplish this is to bring new faces.

We are going to finish below .500 for the second year in a row, and they need talent upgrades.  They need to reduce reliance on analytics and get back to baseball.  Saw a tweet yesterday that said their minor league affiliates made history by being the first organization to hit 700 plus home runs combined, but yet the combined record of our minor league teams is 244-280.  At some point results have to matter.  This is happening throughout the organization, the process has always been more important than results.

There are no analytics that tell you to punt the SS position and fill the roster with poor defense, LH platoon bats. There are no analytics that tell you to avoid the free agent market for relievers in the offseason. There are no analysts telling people to develop all your minor league pitchers for a 3-inning role that doesn’t exist in the majors or to develop your minor league hitters to play defensive positions they can’t handle in the majors.

The only positive is they might have not traded for Hoffman. They get their reliever and keep Dasan Hill.

I agree that everything that you list are baffling at best decisions.  But I would guess there is data that they will claim supports these decisions.  But we will never know how the exact decisions are made but that is why there needs to be a house cleaning.  They need a fresh review of everything they are doing and figure out how to build a sustainable winning organization and getting rid of Zoll is the start.  And this should happen the day they are officially eliminated.

Avoid the temptation of benching Jenkins.  He MUST play everyday even if he looks bad at times.  I see the Larnach haters are back in full force.  They must be the same people that think Buxton is the savior of the franchise.  The Hoffman trade IMO will godown as one of the worst ever.  Minter has been good.  But this team is a long way away from being a serious contender.  Well we have Detroit for 3.  They are bad.  But so are the Twins
