I'm not sure what the Yankees will give up for a two month rental. I'm not in the room and have never been in the room.

Based on what typically comes back for higher end rentals like Jeffers. I wouldn't expect any players ranked in the top 5 of any organization. it's more likely you get a couple of players ranked in double digits... 10 or higher.

Maybe 3 if they really really really need a catcher.

Two months of a catcher. He will play about 30 regular season games for his new employer.

Caratini is under contract next year for a very reasonable $7 million. If they trade Caratini and Jeffers walks at the end of the year it would leave Jackson as the only semi-legit catcher on the roster for 2027. Caratini isn't going anywhere.

You can find another Caratini next year.

Here is a question, Matthew. What if Jeffers is traded to the Yankees or Rays. And what if Jeffers, with his insider's knowledge of the Twins' hitters and pitchers. is the catcher for the Twins' opposition in this year's playoffs. I think that gives the opposition a unique advantage over the Twins. Jeffers must be loyal to his current team, be it the dreaded Yankees or the irascible Rays.

Hancock is not a prospect. You may be thinking of Kade Anderson. And, no, he's not available for any realistic package.

Hancock wouldn't be available for the Larnach centered package either, but he's not a prospect. The Mariners want right-handed bats. Jeffers is the piece you're trying to sell there. It'd take more than that, but Jeffers is the best piece they have in a possible Hancock deal.

Good catch and yes I am

Looking back over the last 10 years, in the deadline rental trades the Yankees haven’t given up much more than a replacement level payer. Even in the non rental players it is rare for them to give up much.

I get the impression that the MLB GM's are pretty disciplined. I believe the days of getting the #1 Ranked Prospect Torres and 5th Ranked prospect McKinney for Chapman are over.

Who knows... Maybe I'll be surprised.

I'm fine with one of these power arms for Jeffers. If nothing else maybe we could turn them into a late inning reliever ...

Question for folks: Does Joe Ryan having his start pushed back nearly a full time through the rotation after giving up his annual billion homer game make you more inclined to move Jeffers? Less inclined? No change?

If Ryan goes out Wednesday and doesn't look like himself, knowing he's faded in every 2nd half in his career, does it change your perception on the Twins chances at making the playoffs and thus whether or not we should trade Jeffers?

But if his new employer is rich and under tremendous pressure from its fans and the media to win every year and needs a right handed hitting catcher...then "Show me the money, Jerry"!

Which is why, if I'm the Yankees, I've already talked to Jeffers agent (with Twins permission) and will have a 5 yr $75mm contract ready to sign.

Now we're getting into the weeds! Love it. I'd think he can probably bring a little extra knowledge to one of those teams in a matchup against the Twins, but I don't think it'd be anything significant beyond what the teams already know. I mean, these boards can put together pretty darn impressive scouting reports on the Twins with just publicly available data. It's pretty hard to hide any weaknesses from teams in this day and age of Major League Baseball.

I think this is correct. But I think the Rays and Yankees especially, and the Mariners to a degree, are getting relatively desperate for some playoff success. And they all need a catcher in the worst way. Not suggesting the Twins can get a top 50 prospect for him or anything, but somebody in the 90-150 range? I think it's doable.

Shoot, there's talk of the Rays having checked in on Skubal. And their POBO (Erik Neander) has been out there talking about their willingness to go bigger than usual this deadline. Could certainly be smoke and mirrors there, but I think you can drum up a relatively nice bidding war for Ryan Jeffers and snag a legit, albeit it flawed, prospect for him.

Looking at the trade deadline activity in recent years will be pretty sobering for those expecting elite prospects in return for Jeffers.

Who knows... maybe I'll be surprised.

Who knows... maybe Jeffers remains a Twin.

Ryan Jeffers is going to become a free agent. The bidding will start in November.

Part of the arguments people make for "go for it" sure do seem predicated on havign Joe Ryan as an ace.  Hopefully he turns it around but this is a fairly robust sample size at this point:

None of those excite me. The only guy that may have been decent has a possible career altering injury.

If these are the types of guys you can get for trading Jeffers, you may as well keep him and give him the QO. If he accepts, we'll have a top 5ish C in the league and if he declines, the compensation pick will most likely net a similar or possibly even better prospect

Great point CH. I am looking for any advantage to win, be it past knowledge while on the opponent's team, sign stealing, inches, mental games, or some teams even have resorted to looking  to garbage cans. But I think I will agree with your point about the vast array of information that is already available to all the teams in this information age.

I was reminded listening to the Talking Baseball podcast that the Rays once offered top prospect Junior Caminero to the Angels for rental Shohei Ohtani. I could see them being the most aggressive team this deadline. Of course, the Dodgers could swoop in and send over one or more of their 4 top 25 prospects in all of baseball to Detroit for Skubal.

A bidding war is the only way you can make up the difference between a full year and two months of control.

WIll it be enough?. It's one of those things that we will never know since we wasn't moved in the off-season.

Ryan Jeffers is going to be a very rich man in 6 months. I am happy for him and his family. I met his future wife in a North Carolina fast food restaurant on my way to a North Carolina  beach. I had on my Twins hat and a Twins Ft Myers spring training shirt. An attractive young lady, who was also a customer,  came up to me and told me she had noticed my Twins hat and shirt and that her fiancé' had just been drafted by the Twins.  She told me his name was Ryan Jeffers, who was from Raleigh and had played at UNC-Wilmington. I told her I knew a lot about her fiancé's baseball skills and was glad the Twins drafted him. I wished them both good luck. He became, and has remained, one of my all time favorite players. He appears to be humble, family oriented, polite and a great catcher. When he is traded, I will be sad.

Not my money, but I prefer keep Jeffers and offer him the qualifying offer. Unless they get blown away, they should trade Caratini instead.

Lewis to the Angels for Zeferjahn

Wallner and Adams to Colorado for Vodnik

Caratini to the Rays for prospects

Bell to whoever for prospects

Larnach and ERod to Seattle for Hancock

Who catches when you trade Caratini and Jeffers doesn’t accept the QO?

Jeffers is a rental in theory but if the Yankees trade for him, they'll be able to re-sign him to an extension. The Twins need to approach the trade discussions with that at the forefront.

I agree with this. I think analytics has reduced the amount of human bias that goes into evaluating players / trades. So perhaps they are more “accurate” now.

Jeffers is already a very rich man having made about $14.5 mil in MLB.

So the Twins allegedly have one of the top 5 minor league farm systems in baseball and we are going to trade one of the best catchers in the league for even more prospects when we desperately need major league pitching?  I don't get it.

I agree and the only assumption that I make in regards to trades is that there isn't much point trying to evaluate who won or lost a trade at the moment it happens.

Analytics which I assume every team is utilizing is going to force trades to fairly close to value equal.

Trades will be won and lost after the trade depending on the performance or the development of the players acquired.
