Richie the Rally Goat Community Moderator Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Is this FO incompetent, that they can’t effectively multitask, to fill gaps in the roster while negotiating with Correa, or are they so hamstrung by budget that they can’t afford to sign Correa and fill other holes adequately? both paint a picture of incompetence as resigning one player you can’t afford is just as bad as not being able to multitask as a basic pre-requisite of management chpettit19, Rigby, howeda7 and 1 other 4

He didn't hit a lot last year, although it was some ~80 OPS points higher than Celestino, but he'd been over .800 every year but one since 2016, and that was .795. He's also probably a better CFer than Gilbert.

I was wondering what he was coming up with next. JT, Gallo, Pollock and Klingenbeck are really winners. Where is he getting his info? If there is any truth to what he's saying then IMO this FO has lost it. LewFordLives 1

chpettit19 Community Moderator Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 If they can move Kepler for anything useful and bring in Gallo for Kepler's salary or lower I wouldn't actually mind that. Replace 1 elite defender with another while bringing in whatever you can get for Kepler. That's a net positive. Certainly wouldn't make the offseason a win, though. And I expect Gallo wouldn't be happy to sign for less than 10 million so he's a no for me. But for less than 10 million I'd be ok with it. What else they going to spend their money on?

HerbieFan Verified Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 The veteran bat that interests me is JD Martinez. That's about it. He can DH. Probably could figure out how to play a little 1B. Look, after losing Correa, it doesn't matter which FA they now add....either way, they HAVE to have a couple of the Larnach, Kiriloff, Miranda, etc., take big steps forward. If they don't, 2023 is going to be a lost season no matte what. I say sign Martinez to fill the DH/Part-time 1B role and let the young guys play the other spots. If some young guys progress, a lineup with Miranda at 3B, Farmer at SS until Lewis is ready, Polanco at 2B, Kiriloff/Arraez at 1B, Larnach in LF, Buck in CF, Kepler in RF, Vazquez at C, Martinez at DH isn't terrible. As long as it's a 1-2 year deal, give him $15 million then. We have nothing else to spend it on anyway. They could take on Aaron Hicks contract and buy prospects from the Yankees instead. I wouldn't be upset with Benintendi, but he's also likely to get a longer term deal than Gallo as Gallo could use a pillow contract to try to gain some value back. The Twins need whatever kind of offense they can get. You can prefer batting average. Nothing wrong with that. I didn't say they should be knocking the door down to get Gallo. I said if they can trade Kepler and replace him with Gallo it's a net positive. Didn't say it should be plan A. Just said it wouldn't be the worst move in the world. He's an elite defender and has elite power. He's a useful player. Just not a huge difference maker. You're allowed to not like him, though. But if Benintendi is your big move I'm not impressed either. sthpstm 1

Yes, they do. The Twins were better, in relation to the rest of the league, at getting on base last year than they were at slugging. So maybe someone with power would actually be the bigger improvement on the offense.

However, they also need more productive outs and better clutch hitting. I think more contact will help that, not less.
