Okay, a flame-throwing HS pitcher was about the last type of player I expected the Twins to take.

I like it though. Was a bit afraid they would go with a bat first college COF again.

Cleveland got the guy I was hoping would fall to Twins.  Most of the high end pitching was picked over.  Was not looking for a high school pitcher who may end up a reliever per some reports but this is better than a bat IMO.

So ... it says he (Chase) has committed to Florida ... I assume that they wouldn't have drafted him if they didn't know they could sign him, right?

One would hope they have at least had some prelim talks.  Most of the time, they have at least sent out some feelers to see which way the kid is leaning.

It's understandable.  HS kids come with a lot of question marks, even the ones that ooze talent.

Can throw 100+ but is going to need secondary pitches and some health to be a stud. Good high risk high reward pick

That being said... this kid is pretty good.  Should be really fun to watch him progress and grow over the next few years.

I think they go Mack at 36 if still on the board.

I like the thinking on the Petty pick, swinging of the fences so to speak...

And since it was a late 1st round pick, if they can't sign him they don't lose as much with the comp pick next year.

I don't disagree but on the other hand, it's not like they spend a top ten pick on him. And since the Twins have two late first round picks I have no problem with using one of them for a risky high upside player.

Historically, the 10th High School pitcher taken by the Twins in the first round. Jose Berrios and you may not want to look at the balance... It really is a crapshoot with pitchers - just hope they stay healthy and develop.

Chase Petty. Who?? A high school pitcher. There must have been half a dozen of us that specifically told them not to pick a high school pitcher. Not just because of recent draft flubs, but because it takes up to five years to coach up and get guys like this ready for the show.

I would also note that this is a draft by a management team that thinks it has solid job security.  Neither of these players will see MLB for 4-5 years in all likelihood....

As opposed to all the Twins college picks who take 4-5 years.

MLB draft is kind of like opening a new soda because the last one went flat.

We get excited because they managed to manipulate the bonuses and eventually sign Will Holland and Willie Jo Gary, which seemed big at the time, but it has gone stale.

Failures of past front offices should have little to no bearing on the actions of the current front office.
