Time to send down Thorpe? Maybe for Astudillo or Tellis if Garver is hurt?

Sounds about right. Of course, Garver might go on the injured list, in which case there would be a chance to either keep Thorpe or bring up both a fresh pitcher and backup catcher.

Yes, he's been officially optioned. That's his final option, and will be out next season.

Not necessarily. If Littell spends fewer than 20 days on optional assignment this season, he will get credit for a full year of MLB service time and not burn an option for 2020, thus he would still have an option remaining for 2021.

And it wouldn't surprise me if Littell is back within 20 days.

EDIT: And he's back today, per Seth's tweet below!

So Alcala is coming from the taxi squad, and how exactly does that work? I assume the 3 players (Alcala, Telis, Thielbar) were traveling with the team and not working out with the 60 man pool that aren't on the 30 man roster? And do they choose a new player to join the taxi squad since Alcala has been elevated?

well yes, players on the taxi squad cant necessarily be used as regular roster players at home or on the road. There would have to be a positive test or an injury to make them even eligible to suit up. (or a doubleheader)

Man i was just thinkin last night that no way can Avila play every day if Garver goes down. Catcher will be a a major weak spot if anything like that happens.

Now we wait to see who got DFA'd from the 40 man to make room for Jeffers.

Didn't I read recently that Nick Gordon still wasn't active? If he's not eligible for the special COVID IL, perhaps they could place him to the 60-day (now 45-day) IL to open up a 40-man spot. Gordon would be done for the year then, although it would get some MLB service time.

Buxton on the IL again. What a shocker

We should have traded him during the 1 day he was hitting .300 last week and at peak value! :)

Wow, it's great to see Jeffers get a shot over Tortuga (on 40 man) and Telis (was on the taxi squad, so the original 3rd catcher). Hopefully he can inject some better hitting into this lineup!

You can forget what I said on Littell's option, as he was called right back up, so that final option remains.

I wonder if Wade will actually get used this time around? With Cave taking Buxton's spot for the short term, that means that Wade should be the 4th OF. Or maybe Marwin will play more of LF/RF and less infield.

Why Jeffers over La Tortuga?

Astudillo was sidelined for awhile, so maybe he's not in the best condition for regular duty behind the plate?

Avila is a <50% starter at this point of his career, so whoever replaced Garver was going to get a lot of reps.

JEFFERS!!!! So glad he gets the call over mediocre Astudillio. I will never understand the fascination. Jeffers is part of future. We need a youth spark, not a retread. And when has Astudillio ever been in the best condition for regular duty? At any position.

I was hoping for Duran (on the 40 man - Jeffers was not) too, but instead we get Littell and his 2020 gopher balls back.

I am super excited to see Jeffers in the Majors, too.

Maybe we'll see Duran yet. I could imagine that the Twins would like to give Maeda an extra day of rest after he threw that many pitches. Maybe then, instead of another bullpen game?

Edit: Apparently, Maeda will indeed get an extra day of rest. Could still mean another bullpen game, though.

My guess would be because they need a catcher and Jeffers is the better catcher.

Yes. Gearrin was DFAed to make space for Vargas. There still will have to make room for Jeffers.

Without looking, they must not have needed to because Jeffers has been added and played and nothing was announced.

Edited to add: I also count 41 on their 40 man roster page, so I have inquired and will let you know what I find out. Maybe there is a "COVID exception for Gordon"? I'm confused.

How could you be confused about anything this year, Seth?

After all we've only had two spring trainings, or was one summer? And the 162 game season has been reduced to 60. The National League Central is on our schedule, but not the East or West American League teams and we are using the DH in the National League Parks. We played a couple 7 inning games recently and the other night when we got to the 10th inning it began with some guy on second base. The rules with which the teams must comply are all screwed up and the players are either happy or unhappy with what they are being paid. It is likely that not all the teams will play the same number of games and over half of all the teams will be in the playoffs which are longer than normal this fall.

So what don't you get, Seth? What is confusing?

And I also have been wondering who is the odd man out to create the opening for Jeffers. And they will need another spot in 10 days when Pineda is activated. Looking at the 40, there aren't any obvious choices. With that said, I for one am delighted to have baseball to watch every night!

That would be my guess too, but it would be a little odd that they didn’t use it until now.

They could also put Gordon on the MLB 60-day IL (actually only 45 days for 2020), although that would shut him down for the season. (He’d get a little MLB service time that way, though!)

Just took a look at the 40-man, Seth. There aren't any obvious candidates for the two (2) spots they will need within the next ten days. Am looking at seven names from whom I could see them designating two of for assignment. They are Chalmers, Thorpe, Thielbar, Astudillo, Blankenhorn, Gordon or Wade. [Yes, I agree that a couple of these ain't going anywhere. But there isn't an obvious choice like in prior years. And that's good, real good.]

Maybe they will try to trade one or two of them in the next few days. Heck, maybe they already DFA'd one of them and are talking about a trade as I write this.

A thousand times, yes. Crazy year. Crazier if we didn't have baseball. Unthinkable even. (Now crossing fingers.)

The Gearrin move happened when Vargas was added to the roster. Darren Wolfson said he was told by someone in the front office that it was Gearrin to make room for Jeffers so I am completely lost. Has to be that there is an exception for Gordon or there's a move coming today.

Weird situation, but when Gearrin was added to the 40 man, we didn't learn who was DFA'd until over 24 hours later, at least by the user who posted the update. We should learn soon.

Buxton on the IL again. What a shocker

The yearly "Byron Buxton is in the best shape of his life and won't get hurt this year" article is the new "Joe Mauer adjusts X, feels great in Spring Training".

Posted

Stashak is eligible to come off the IL today if I am not mistaken, so he could be the obvious choice to replace Littell. As far as 40-man space, is it possible that Littell's injury could put him on the 45-day list (ending his season) but creating 40-man space for the promotion of Jeffers?

It is my assumption that someone was DFAed yesterday when Jeffers was promoted. Can that DFA be withdrawn if room has been made by another transaction (45 day for Littell)?

I'm also assuming less than great news for Littell. He's pitched himself to the fringe of the roster and something wrong with the area around the throwing elbow sounds pretty ominous.

A DFA’d player can only be returned to the roster in this manner if his vacated spot hasn’t already been filled. So in most cases, including this one, it isn’t possible.
