Anticipating an Arraez move today as well. That will be interesting...would the Twins option Wade again and if so is he eligible for the postseason without anyone getting injured?

All optioned players are automatically "recalled" as soon as the MLB regular season ends -- I think optional assignment status ceases to exist at that point, so I don't think the 10-day minimum applies anymore (although you are right that in a normal season, it's not an issue anyway, since the minor league seasons generally end at least 10 days earlier).

So Wade or anyone else could still be included on a postseason roster next week, even if they are optioned this week.

7. All players on Optional Assignment to the minors must be recalled no later than the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season.

FWIW, the Phillies and Rays have both announced their 40-man postseason player pools, and both include players that have been optioned in recent days (and would not normally be eligible to be recalled from option assignment when the playoffs begin on Sep. 29).

Bailey activated, will start tonight vs Detroit.

The 40-man roster is full again.

Poppen optioned to make room on the 28-man active roster.

Why? Are we going for the division or not? Start Maeda tonight and Hill tomorrow. I don't think one extra day of rest will hurt him for game 1. And if you insist on pushing him back, I'd rather bring Dobnak back over than have Bailley pitch for the first time 2 months.

Dobnak is not eligible to return until Friday Sep. 25 unless someone goes on the IL.

But I don't think Bailey is a bad option tonight either -- don't forget, he was solid for the A's down the stretch last year including 2 good starts vs NYY. If he is healthy now, a 2 month absence up until now doesn't disqualify him from potentially being useful in long relief in the postseason.

Can a player from the 60 man pool be included in the 40 man playoff bubble pool even if he is not on the 40 man roster? Eg Kirilloff.

Yes. The Rays included their top prospect Wander Franco, and the Phillies included 4 guys who aren't on their 40-man roster.

You'll just have to clear a spot and add them to the 40-man roster if you want to actually use them in a game.

Do you suppose Poppen drives himself on all these trips between St Paul and Minneapolis, or does the team spring for an Uber? Does he get mileage reimbursement on his own car?

I would certainly love to see Bailey have a good game tonight. I think I would bet the under but I would hope to be wrong.

If so, what are the odds Dobnak is his driver today? :)

There is light rail between the two downtowns. Maybe Metro Transit could rebrand it as the "AAA shuttle".

Our top 9 guys in the bullpen are pretty well set and presumably we may add Odorizzi and/or Hill for the WC round. How many pitchers will we carry? Is the roster 28 for the play-offs? Even if so, I can't see more than 14 pitchers.

The other issue with starting Bailey tonight: The next 3 games will be Maeada, Berrios, Pineda in some order. That means either Hill or Odorizzi will pitch Sunday. The other won't get another start. Pitching Maeda tonight and Hill tomorrow would have allowed Odo to pitch Sunday.

Yes, 28 man roster, no limit on pitchers vs position players.

Keep in mind, round 2 is potentially 5 games in a row with zero off days. Round 3 is potentially 7 games in a row with zero off days. We may want 5 SP for those series -- even if Bailey isn't in our top 5, it's a good idea to have him ready in case of emergency (and he might be in our top 5 depending on Odorizzi's status). You may want a relief option who can give you more length for those series too -- an early exit could really decimate the bullpen.

I'll take Dobnak in that role of over Homer.

That would have been an option too, but whoever isn't starting in the first round (presumably Hill?) doesn't need to start this weekend, and in fact might benefit more from a relief outing, if that will be their role in the first round.

You will still have that option, even if you give a few innings to Bailey tonight. Why not let them compete, instead of dismissing one without an audition? Dobnak can get some innings yet this weekend too (since he's ineligible to pitch tonight).

And you may need BOTH Dobnak and Bailey, if Odorizzi is unavailable. This playoff format could really test SP depth.

Homer Bailey DFA'd.

Edwar Colina added to the 40-man and active rosters.

So do we know if this is procedural and he can/will/might be added once the season ends, or, is he hurt again and done for the year?

If he was hurt they would have put him on the IL.

I take this as they're waving the white flag on the experiment.

I'm not sure why they are calling it a DFA. All they can do with Bailey at this point is release him, and he won't be eligible for the postseason with any other club, so he is effectively done for 2020.

If he was was placed on the IL, I'm not sure he'd be eligible to be replaced on the postseason roster next week? I know in a normal year, a player has to be eligible to return from the IL (meaning, spent at least 10 days on the 10-day IL, or 45/60 days on the 45/60-day ILs) in order to be replaced on the postseason eligible list. Even with 10 days on the 10-day IL, they'd need to find another way to get Colina on the 40-man roster then since Bailey would still be occupying a spot.

So even if he was hurt, they'd probably rather DFA/release him now.

Surprised about the Bailey move, but with a weekend to go before the postseason, I guess if they don't think they can use him, there is no need to keep him on the roster.

I'm curious about roster manipulation for the playoffs. If, for example, the Front Office decides that Colina can't help them during the playoffs, do they have to option him or just take him off the active roster. If they are going to start Odorizzi in the last game, someone will have to be optioned or DFAed, same for Arraez, if he plays in the last series. Can anyone who is taken off the roster in such a manner simply be added to the active playoff roster?

There are no options after the regular season -- in fact, all optioned players are automatically recalled at the end of the regular season. After that, you're either just on the postseason roster for a particular round, or floating around the alternate training site. :) So I suspect they could option anyone they want on Sunday, but name them to the roster on Tuesday?

Sounds like Rich Hill has been announced as the Sunday starter anyway -- I suspect they'll take him out pretty early (like a tune-up) if the game doesn't mean anything for seeding. But yeah, they'd need to make 28-man spots at least briefly if they want a look at Odorizzi and Arraez too.

Confirmed that Alex Kirilloff is being called up for the Wild Card playoff round.

looking forward to learning why and how he will be used, if at all?

Could Cruz be hurting? Sano?

Posted

Interesting move for Kirillof vs Wade.  Kirillof has more power pop in his bat and not to concerned that it is protection for Cruz or Sano.  I'm thinking Kirillof gives you more pop for late inning lefty batter vs. Avila who doesn't have the pop.  So I could see Avila being left off 28 man if they went 14 pitchers 14 batters.

So there are 10 transitions listed yesterday for twins.  Optioned or Recalled.  Is this tied to end of the year and status changes or playoff pool 40 man allocations tied to regular season over?

Just standard end-of-season stuff. At the end of the regular season, all players on optional assignment are automatically recalled. And 10/15-day IL players are automatically activated.

Basically, options and injured lists cease to exist after the end of the regular season, although 45/60-day IL players don't have to be activated until after the World Series. Twins didn't have anybody left on that IL, though.
