If Chacin still stinks, the team has 3M reasons to keep him off of the 26-man roster. Not a fan; I really dislike starters without a change or curveball. Also, two seamers are still a lame pitch.

 

But he supposedly still has a wipeout slider so I’d be interested in an audition for a second career in the pen. FB/Slider works real well for some guys in that roll.

Minor league deal...if he ever sees the 40-man, it will be because more bad happened (failure and injuries) than good (Chachin becomes legitimately mediocre again).

 

FO just bought some Aflac. Supplemental insurance for when you already have insurance...but you don't love it.

Because he is better than anyone in our rotation not named Berrios and Odorizzi.

Something was very wrong with Chacín last year, but he has been a pretty good pitcher in the NL. His lifetime numbers are as good or better than Bailey's for example, and he's a year and a half younger. His lifetime ERA+ is 108, Odorizzi's is 106. Maybe his style is not conducive to everyone trying to lift the ball and hit it out of the park, but there's a chance he'll have a nice comeback year. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he makes the rotation out of Spring Training and I am not sure that would be a bad thing.

I think I’d disagree. Even with Pineda and Hill out, I’d still put him behind Bailey, Dobnak, Thorpe and Graterol.

I certainly like having more pontentially good pitchers entering camp. Is it perhaps premature to order our pitchers before they arrive in spring training?

 

I also wonder if he ends up as the third Red Wing starter, do we give the OP credit for calling it?

I’d like to chat with Greg Maddox if he thinks pumping 85 mph two seamer would be as effective today (if we’re comparing to Chacin, here). Things aren’t quite as they were in the 90s.

 

Who is even known for/relies on a good two-seamer or sinker anymore? Julio Teheran? I can’t think of anyone notable that doesn’t just use it in an ancillary fashion. Nobody you wouldn’t consider a front line starter. Maybe some good relievers are still effectively featuring a two-seamer or sinker....but it seems to me cutters and sliders are king in terms of results.

Here are the base stats of each pitcher's best season in MLB, each happening within the last 2 years. 

 

Berrios 2019 14-8, 3.68 ERA/3.85 FIP (Postseason: 4 IP, 1 ER)
Odorizzi 2019 15-7, 3.51 ERA, 3.36 FIP (Postseason: 5 IP, 2 ER)
Chacin 2018, 15-8, 3.50 ERA, 4.03 FIP (Postseason: 12.1 IP, 2 ER)

 

Chacin's was in the NL, but he played in a division with 4 teams over .500 that year. Berrios and Odorizzi played in the worst division in baseball. 

 

So yes, it's quite possible.

The Twins signed Chacin and this post informed me of that. I wanted to click on it, I see nothing wrong with the post...you can tell it's a been a long winter and a long off-season, I think we're all a bit restless.

 

I think the Twins have several other pitchers better than Chacin. I see nothing wrong with taking a flyer on a veteran. I don't think anyone wants to see a National League junkballer on the tail end of his career taking the mound for the Twins in an important game....but if the guy can eat a few innings and keep us in a couple low-leverage games as we wait for Pineda, then so be it. Reckon he may be a long shot to make the team.
