He is cheap and can't become a free agent until 2025. You would not trade him unless you were blown away big time.

Of course that won't be a straight up trade (or likely trade at all), but ... I'd listen.
darin617 Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 I don't think I would be interested in Bryant. Only a couple of years left and he would become a free agent. Also the fact of that grievance he filed against the Cubs. He most likely becomes a FA even sooner when he wins it. And his agent is Scott Boras.

Not sure what that would be with something involving Arraez, but, I'd listen.
Major League Ready Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 A trade of Arraez for Yu Darvish take 21.5M off the books for the Cubs who seem very reluctant to exceed the Luxury tax.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 Sano and Arraez for Bryant and Darvish????? Now that would be a blockbuster!

prouster Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 If Darvish is on the table, color me intrigued. Arraez ran a pretty high BABIP last year...

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 The question I always ask for these types of things is who do we have to replace Arraez... That would be Nick Gordon or Adrianza... I'm not ready to crown either as the 2020 starting 2B... and I'm guessing most wouldn't be too excited about bringing back Schoop on a 1 year make good deal. Now that said, Arraez should be a pretty vaulable asset, and if he brought back high end pitching, I'd certainly listen.

We have a lot of infield depth so it's much easier to cover the trade for Arraez than it is to come up with good SPs.
dex8425 Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 I like Arraez but there's several guys on the Cubs I'd take if they really want Arraez. Contreras? Done. Darvish? Done. Bryant? Done. Do they want to shed Lester's salary? I don't really want Lester but if they throw in someone else... I'm sure it involves multiple pieces.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 For either Darvish or Bryant without hesitation. I'd have to think about others.

That would be get Polanco out of SS and move him to 2nd and find a good defensive SS. That would improve the team. It would also depend if Darvish is the target how much of the remaining 81M for 4 years could we get the Cubs to eat? It would be nice to get them to eat 25-30M.
Major League Ready Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 For either Darvish or Bryant without hesitation. I'd have to think about others. I right with you. Why give up Arreaz unless it's a great fit. As I understand it, Bryant's grievance could mean that it would only be 1 year of team control. No way would I give up Arraez for 1 year of Bryant so I doubt they consider Bryant until that grievance is settled.

If Arraez was traded...Twins would improve at 3rd and 1st (sano) and downgrade a bit at second. I take that, not sure i wan't Schoop to be that 2B, but if he is willing to so the same next with Gordon as he did with Arraez, I would be fine with that.

It will weaken 2B....but they will have added Darvish or Bryant....not sure the team is weaker overall. I think Gordon will be ready this summer. If Lewis is the stud everyone believes, he might be ready to come up this year at some point. If they have to downgrade at 2B (offensively) to add Darvish, I'm all in.

Bryant would be great if he loses his grievance. I certainly wouldn't complain.

He is cheap and can't become a free agent until 2025. You would not trade him unless you were blown away big time. I would expect the Cubs are not dangling any pitcher save maybe Lester (who can be bought out for 10M after this year). Most likely this would be a trade involving Contreras or Bryant. And there is no way Arraez would be all the Cubs would command in return for either of those guys. To the extent the Twins want to shed any salary in this deal to absorb the cost of Bryant (he's probably going to get 18.5 this year and 22 or so next year) that could take the cost in prospects and players like Arraez even a bit higher. Contreras will make 4.5M this year and has three years of control left. Bryant has two years of control as all the talking heads expect him to lose his grievance.
gcg2016 Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 I wouldn't be against it personally, but it's worth noting that this will weaken the team unless you believe Schoop's performance decline was injury related. How does adding Kris Bryant weaken any team? The Cubs are going to want multiple players who are young and cost controlled in return - perhaps some already with a bit of service time and perhaps some prospects. Keep in mind that Bryant is very capable OF and can play 1B too. And he's good on the bases too. The Cubs biggest issue is that Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, Schwarber, Almora (no biggie) and Contreras all become UFAs in 2021 and 2022. No way they can extend them all. So they have choices to make. I would not expect them to deal a frontline starter as they still have a team they think can contend. This is all about retooling the core so it isn't all coming due at once for them. And the Twins are definitely the type of team that could get over the top with a few added pieces. Also could see the Cubs dangling Kimbrel perhaps.

He had negative WAR last year and costs $16M/year. Not so attractive.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 I have to say I don’t believe these rumors. Not sure why Chicago would target Arraez. I would only be interested in getting MLB pitching for him. I don’t see any reason to trade away one of our best cheap hitters unless I’m getting wowed by the return.
In My La Z boy Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 Painful as it sounds, selling Arraez now is selling high. This is how you do it. Think of all the can't miss guys we held on to, that ended up missing? That being said, I see Arraez as a future batting champion and an excellent lead off table setter, and I like his chances to be an all-star. If it isn't a haul (Contreras or Baez or Darvish) then move on.I could see the Cubs partnering with us on a blockbuster.
gcg2016 Verified Member Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 Dangling suggests he is an attractive addition. He had negative WAR last year and costs $16M/year. Not so attractive. He also didn't start playing until what was it, July? I hear you, but there is the longer term track record.Looking at the Twins roster they have a window similar to that of the Cubs - lots of UFA's in 2022 and 2023. So the time for them to go all in is right now given they won 101 last year. Hard for me to see anyone on the Twins roster they'd want to send to Chicago to eat up some of Bryant's cost with the exception of Marwin Gonzalez who is owed $10.5M a year for two more years while posting an OPS of under .800 and an OPS+ of less than 100. So you could perhaps see the Cubs saying here's Kris Bryant at an average cost of what Gonzalez will cost you over the next two years when you send us Gonzalez. In return thee Cubs also need a haul of other players/prospects. So give the Cubs Gonzalez and Arraez (who helps the Cubs now) and all his years of control as well as something like Kirilloff and Balazovic. There could be other "pieces" in there too going either way. But that is the type of deal I could see getting the Twins a huge piece at an affordable price so they can make other moves to win now. I also could see the Padres, Dodgers or Braves wanting Bryant and they likewise have the types of pieces to get this type of deal done. Minnesota basically would be getting Bryant for the same price (even less) than Gonzalez and can invest elsewhere to get other parts needed this offseason to try and win right now.

I'd note the Cubs 40 man roster is sitting at 35 after yesterday's deadline to add players. That suggests they may be working on some sort of multi-player deal. And their FO has said they want hitters who bring some added discipline to the line up given their lead off guys were awful last year. I bet they had an OBP of less than 32% from that spot. And the team struck out a ton too.
