Good defensive placement isn't what made that Judge catch or any number of other balls in play. Or when Rosario missed a homer by a foot while the Yankees scrape one over the wall by six inches.

Baseball is a hugely luck-based sport. The best team wins most of the time, but not all the time, not even close.

It's just a bad night for the Twins that has come at the worst possible time.

But also, I'm mad, just like you. But not about tonight, this is just how baseball works.

But I'm furious about games one and two.

The Yankees have played better defense tonight. It’s not really an argument to me. Better placement on a hot past sano saves a run. And that followed cave’s Superman lunge in the outfield. Since we’ve scored zero runs, that right there was enough to lose this game. Heck we aren’t even outhitting them

Joining up late today.

Tear gas near our school last night, most subway stops, including ours, closed. Traffic at a standstill all around the city. Primary section cancelled, lots of extra duties today.

Our base-ball club are not on the plus side, (yet), but by golly it's good to still be in the game in the 7th.

Go Twins.

Good to hear from you. Please try to stay safe.

This ain't over yet.

Cool gif, but there was a split second of terror that I was seeing something I would desperately wish I could unsee.

Sort of...in the short term. I would say that over the course of a 162 game season, baseball is the least luck based sport. Talent differentials are thin, but they are absolutely crucial and absolutely determinative over the long haul. The better teams end up winning in the regular season.

Over the short haul, those thin talent margins lead to some wonky results.

The Yankees have played very good defense but defense doesn't help you when the ball is pushed three inches further than your glove, which is my point. The Twins have drilled the ball and have nothing to show for it. I suspect the catch probability on some of these balls is *extremely* low.

And that's just baseball luck. It's great for the Yankees they made good catches but if a few of those balls drift literally a few inches in a different direction, it's an entirely different game. It's possible to say the Yankees both played good defense while also acknowledging they were put in the position to make that catch on a ball that has an extremely low catch probability, which is just bad luck that happens in baseball.

But I have NO IDEA what the hell Sano was doing on that hard hit ball at him. WTF was he doing that close in on the dirt? I was baffled at the time and after discussing it with a friend who was watching with me, neither of us could figure out WTF a third baseman was doing that close to the plate with two outs.

Pathetic performance. Good thing they hit all those bombas to they'll be able to convince people this year was different than every other year.

I think I agree with that. GIven the sheer size of data samples, baseball probably regulates itself to normalcy more than many other sports.

That's not how baseball works a significant percentage of the time, unfortunately.

There's a reason the best team in baseball loses to the worst team roughly one-third of the time.

I believe the only stat that matters at all once the playoffs starts...... is the score. Is runs. Nothing else matters. Not in the least. Only scoring the most runs in each game. That determines if you out played the other team.

What I’m worried about, if this ends up being a loss to tie the North American sports playoff loss record, is that the twins morph into the Viking levels of choking. I can take one team choking but not two
