Absolutely spot on. Take anything Doogie says with a grain of his "self-serving-sources" salt.

As that fictional chemistry genius Walter White once said:

"Name one thing in this world that is not negotiable."

Hmm...quoting a fictional character who committed numerous felonies using firearms about how to negotiate. Interesting rhetorical device.

I like the addition of Dyson to the bullpen ... but not convinced that that getting him and Romo was enough to make the pen a top notch one that is going to get us far in the playoffs. But hey, at least it's something and things could have been much worse. A lot of quality bullpen arms and starters out there who weren't moved, so there's that in the equation too. But my first thought when I saw the details of the trade was one of dismay; giving up 3 quality prospects seemed like a lot to pay for a relief pitcher who isn't even considered a closer. Okay, I know they weren't top 10, or even top 20 prospects, but I liked each one of them and I'm sorry they are gone. But ... we got a live arm, and Dyson isn't just a 2 month rental, but a player who'll be with the team next year, so that's a comfort But please please please, ... don't let this turn into the second coming of Matt Capps.

It will be a tough task for sure, but remember how impossible it seemed in 2002 that the young Twins could compete or even beat the A's star rotation of Mulder, Zito, Hudson? Those three were stars at the time

Of course, as impressive as they were, those A's had yet to win a playoff series (and still haven't, outside of sweeping us in 2006).

In any case, I am not too pessimistic yet about our chances in 2019. Should be fun!

I think we need to move away from calling it a conspiracy theory just for a second. That falls into the labeling category that Carole talked about in that pinned notice up top. I'm saying as a mod that this is not a smart way to argue it and one that will eventually lead down a path that will need to be squelched.

Look, I believe in quite a few conspiracies... because at the end of the day, you can weigh plenty of objective evidence on them and note that what is told doesn't match up to what we know of the evidence... and people in power/influence most definitely use it as a CYA. There are plenty that fall into that range. Like you, I agree that this isn't one of them. I don't, however, think you're doing anyone any benefit by framing it in that way.

All we know is that Greinke didn't want to come here. We know the Twins checked in on it. We don't know WHY Zach didn't want to come here, because he didn't tell us. There isn't much in terms of logical conclusions we can come to, so let's not try to reinforce our point by labeling our opponents.

Your last paragraph is my exact point. We don’t know what's in Grienke’s heart or mind (I don’t always know what’s in my own heart and mind). So it’s really pointless to even ask.

My gripe is that for weeks a number of people (I’m not thinking of anyone specifically) have been automatically doubting any piece of information that explains why move X didn’t happen. It’s paranoid to see an underlying set of shadow reasons (they’re lying to us because they aren’t trying to improve the team and they want my money) when the ordinary explanation is a lot more plausible: it’s hard to complete trades because there are many factors involved.

Does anyone know some of the starting pitchers that are going to be hitting the FA market this winter? If we are playing the long game who are we looking at to have as a potential starting 5 next year? If they are this frugal at this deadline to get someone with team control them must have an idea of who they are targeting to replace 3 if not 4 of the 5.

Here is a good list of upcoming free agent eligibles:

Asking the obvious question: What conspiracies do you believe in? If you say moon landing, that should be warning points.

Leave it to the twins to overpay for someone who will be DFA’d by September.... not a fan of the Sam Dyson deal.. I was really hoping Cody Allen would be back to his old self too... welp I guess there’s always next year.. hopefully we can get some decent pitching this offseason

Baseball is a long season, and Dyson's numbers show a pretty good pitcher, but good grief.

A three run lead with only 3 outs left should be close to impossible to blow against the most feeble offense in baseball.

You only get one chance at a first impression, and fair or not, it's going to be a long time before I have any trust in Dyson.

Pretty neat that the new guy has already had an impact on this baseball team, and he has only played in one game.

There is some irony in a move, intended to strengthen the bullpen, having an immediate result that leaves it in a highly weakened state heading into the next series.

To quote Forest Gump, “it happens.”

You will always say it happens until it happens all the time. Then it's going to be too late.

Duffey might be better. I mean that as a credit to Duffey not a knock on Dyson.

He did the work to make changes this year. Brandon Warne did a nice piece last spring about his work on tunneling. He is a two pitch pitcher now with his increased use of the curveball and dropping the change up.

He has performed well. To go with his solid ERA he also has not allowed an inherited runner to score this year. His strike out rate is 29.1%. It is time to trust Duffey with the 8th inning.

I like Romo as setup.  Duffey has great stuff and I do really think he has the make up to be a shut down reliever, his problem is that damn control.  Once he loses it, he really loses it.  If he could learn to harness it just a little better I really think he could be something special.

Neither Romo or Dyson were what I ultimately hoped to acquire but they were the best relievers that moved at the deadline.

As far as trusting late they need more than 3 or they will overwork those 3. Duffey needs to join that group and right now he needs to be ahead of Dyson.

"Until." Are we presupposing?

Have you looked at his track record, such as his game log this year? He had a bad outing for SF on July 13, quite similar to what we've seen, with 3 runs given up without recording an out. Blew the save. Team lost.

Then he came in to a game two days later and began a string of 7 appearances leading up to the trade, where he pitched an inning each time and gave up an aggregate of 2 hits and 1 walk, for an OPS-against of .212. (Yes, his BABIP was a little low. :) )

I mean, this is the nature of a relief pitcher.

He gave us two truly terrible games. His record doesn't say this is who he is, though.

He's a 31-year old athlete. I don't think it makes sense to throw out his entire recent body of work, and make extrapolations like "until" based on two games.

the bullpen is absolutely improved, and agreed, The Twins got the two best relievers that moved. I was hoping for more, if it were Giles, Romo, Dyson, i’d be very, very happy. Just Romo and Dyson and you’re counting on one of the young guys to take big leap forward.

That can absolutely happen, but tough to count on. Fingers crossed that one of May, Duffey, Littell steps up big.

More likely the 6th or 7th.

In my “perfect world” scenario, Rogers is the “get out of trouble” guy in the 7th or 8th (or 9th in a tie game). Romo should be used to start the 9th with a lead. Duffey would be used if/when the starter runs into trouble in the 6th or 7th. Until he shows he deserves a more critical role, probably use May to relieve the starter before the 6th (most likely when losing). Dyson and the AAA reliever rotation roles to be determined.
