While this is true now, I did compete professionally in another sport, so I do have some personal experience with mental fortitude in athletics. While I never made it to the pinnacle, I can say that in order to be successful, whether its sport or business, mental strength is absolutely necessary and its fair game to call it out for what it is...physical or mental.
-
It seems some of you have misconstrued the message. I certainly wasn't condoning what was said. However, if we're talking about Baseball at the highest level of the profession, its open season to discuss a players ability to handle the mental aspect of the game. It's just as important, if not more, than the physical side of the game. Many players cannot and have not handled playing in major markets like NYC. Why is that? Pressure, scrutiny, fans....all of these factors can weigh on a player who is not mentally up for it. Its absolutely fair game to discuss this. I bet if I dug through post history, many of the same users who flamed me for my comments have probably made some fairly savage comments about a players physical ability. I stand by the statement that he's mentally soft...and that is no different than saying a player is terrible because he can't hit a curveball. Both have the same outcome. If you can't handle the game physically or mentally, then you end of up doing something else. The world is littered with ex athletes that couldn't handle the pressure in one way or another.
-
The whole point is that if your playing in the Major Leagues of any sport, you're going to hear some unsavory things. If you can't block that out, then mentally, your weak. Some might say soft. That doesn't excuse the behavior of the fan, but it does say a lot about the player. Think of what Jackie Robinson had to endure. That's real toughness. Imagine folding at what some loser in the stands says to you.
-
Let me be clear. Duran is SOFT. If you've made it to the pinnacle of your profession, one that pays you millions of dollars to play a game and you can't handle something some lowlife in the stands says, then your probably not going to make it. Mental toughness is something that this younger generation lacks and this is a perfect example. Coddled babies. Again, I wouldn't say it (unless maybe its game 7 of the world series and i'm 6 tallboys deep) but if mean words make you fall apart, then you cooked.
-
Its not right...I wouldn't say it. BUT... god these guys are soft. Oh...a fan said something nasty to you? If that's the worst thing you have to deal with as a professional athlete, then your probably doing fine. Heckling is part of the game and it always has been. Do people cross the line sometimes? Of course. Does he need thicker skin? YES. they used to throw hot pennies at outfielders in new york.

Its really easy at this point to play the "woe is us card" but...do they REALLY need scouts to go watch other MLB teams in person? The article on the athletic says that most teams are doing away with this and just using video. With all the data that is out there for these guys, it really does seem pointless to send somebody in person to scout games.

I was bummed to see they aren't selling, But, what if... It works out? If they have 425M in debt, my guess is the new "partners" are bringing in enough money to offset that amount or more. I think they do know and understand that a winning team puts people in the seats which drives revenue, which drives value. With the debt cleared, my bet is that they spend on free agents. Do I think they'll go crazy? No. Do I think they will spend a reasonable amount to make the team competitive....yes. They have before and I think they'll do it again.

If i'm the front office and I know the new ownership is going to spend out of the gate, i'm creating organizational depth. Relievers break down and are not the most reliable group so trading from that strength is smart. If you add 2-3 bats and maybe a starter under new ownership, all of a sudden you have a very deep system to plug holes with. The Pohlads completely hamstrung the front office this year and I can't blame them for tearing it down before new ownership arrives. People hate that they gave up Varland, but I think Roden looks like he's got a chance to be a player and i'd happily trade a reliever for a potential impact bat everyday every day of the week. I think by this time next year people will look back on how they sold this deadline as a slick move. Maybe i'll be wrong...I dunno.
-
LOL. Grow up.
-
This might be an unpopular opinion but i'm fine with all of it. I'm guessing that regarding Varland, who they know way better than we do, that there was some kind of issue. With Jax...he's in his 30's and thats when guys start breaking down. I think they know that with new ownership coming in that they have a strong minor league system and this creates even more depth. I HIGHLY doubt a new ownership group is going to come in and be cheap...at least not initially. New owners are more likely to come in and spend a bunch of money to bring in high end talent...which when combined with whats coming from the farm (particularly pitching) and you have a recipe for sustained success. I'm not that worried about all this. It might sting the rest of this year and next year, but I'm happy to see what should be a quick rebuild. Hope they don't win a game the rest of the year and hit it in the draft lotto.

At least everybody in the Minor league forum can finally shut up about cleaning house and letting Eeles and Mckusker play everyday. #thankyoujesus

I'm certain that we'll look back on this as one of the greatest days in Twins history.

This "core" was never going to win a world series. Blow it ALL up...new owners then come in...play the prospects for a year and see what you have. Then start spending money on free agents. EZ.
