yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 This reminds me of 2001. The Twins traded for a closer and a starter a couple days before the deadline. But getting the starter cost them their leadoff hitter, Matt Lawton. Ortiz and Guzman were already hurt. Doug Mientkiewicz remembered that he was Doug Mientkiewicz after doing an impersonation of Rod Carew for two months. The offense was scuffling, bad. The common wisdom (as I recall, the main messgage board in those days was on espn) was that the Twins were going to trade away some surplus OF prospects for Shannon Stewart or Brian Hunter. Suffice to say, that didn’t happen.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 Angry wouldn't be the right word for me. Disappointed would be appropriate. I have no idea what is happening on those telephone calls but I try to imagine being on the other end of the line. If I'm the GM of the other team and the Twins are calling me about player X. I'm going to ask for the top of the prospects. The Twins have Lewis, Kiriloff, Graterol and I'm going to ask for them. Maybe player X is Larnach value but I'm going to ask for higher because I know the Twins have better. However, other teams that call me, may not have a Lewis or Kiriloff type talent to ask for. So the top of that pile is more in line with the value of player X and I can't hold out for more because there isn't more, besides seeing if the Twins or Astros cave with those really high end guys. In a nutshell, weather I'm right or wrong, I can see a scenario where the Twins can be handicapped in this process because they have better players available to ask and hold out for, when other teams may not. I wouldn't be angry because I can imagine a lot of things at play but yeah... Disappointed for sure. They need to support this team and we had a cannonball roll through the bullpen in July.so...the problem is the Twins minor league system is too good?? Gotta admit, I hadn't thought of that angle. Seems like an easy fix though. In My La Z boy 1
pbrezeasap Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 My wife called me at work to complain about the Twins not having made any trades. She became a fan through marriage and I would consider her a little more than just a casual fan, but she has never really paid attention to the trade deadline very much. If she is past disappointment and into anger territory there better be something in the works. Oldgoat_MN, bird and South Dakota Tom 3

gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 So, in 2017 the FO tried to move Dozier, overplayed their hand, planted obvious rumors in the media to try and drive up his trade value, failed and then in July they traded away talent on a team that made the playoffs. The best return was (checks notes) Zack Littel. In 2018, they made a good trade (Odorizzi) and it looks like the Yankees might have fleeced them in the Jake Cave trade (Gil is #4 prospect in Yankees org). They also traded away a draft pick and $ to the Padres to get out of paying Phil Hughes. They made several deadline deals that are too early to judge fairly but the Pressly trade looks bad while Dozier/Escobar look ok. Maybe the FO just isn't good at trading? Maybe ownership is pushing back more on payroll than we know?
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 I called it. I knew the FO was going to **** the bed. We've played both of them very well this year. A couple meltdowns cost us against the Bronx. I do think Romo will help against the Yankees specifically. But yeah I'm definitely disappointed as well don't get me wrong. bird 1
