I didn't read through the whole thread, so apologies if he's been mentioned, but true #OldFriend Nick Anderson is doing pretty awesome in the Miami Marlins bullpen so far:

 

10 K's among his 13 total outs recorded (20.8 K/9IP).

 

4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K's

 

-0.92 FIP (yes, that's a negative FIP)

 

Thought he deserved a shot last year, extremely happy for him. Was arguably the Twins best performing reliever in the system for a few years before being traded this offseason.

Tyler Kinley made the Marlins staff this year too. He pitched 2 scoreless innings with 1 K against the Braves out of the bullpen on Sunday.

So that means 2 years in a row our Rule 5 pick up made the team the next year.   Haley made the Red Sox last season. Impressive scouting. I recall folks weren't real happy we took either one.   

 

Also, maybe I misread or received bad info, but if Burdi clears waivers etc., he has to be returned to us.

Austin has had a decent start with SF: batting 2nd in the lineup, 2 for 5 with a 2 walks and 2 Ks over 2 games.

He might be one now (hit tool), although he did manage 1.9 bWAR / 1.5 fWAR last year while playing in the outfield.

 

I agree. Span was and always has been a quality bat. He's never been a "speed-only" type of player. He's a legit ballplayer with a solid career and has demonstrated success with every team he's played for, period. I have a ton of respect for that guy.

I agree with this. Span likely could be still, a useful big league hitter. A good hitter without much power doesn't seem to be valued much. There maybe other factors in Span's case. It is possible he isn't interested in playing for close to the major league minimum. Since his production, in theory anyway, can be matched by someone making close to the minimum, that could be one factor. He maybe also viewed as a player whose age suggests he is due for drastic decline in productivity.

"Making the team" doesn't necessarily mean much. The Red Sox called up Haley as a mop-up pitcher for 18 days last summer, then cut him after the season. He's now pitching for the Samsung Lions in Korea. Does that information really validate the Twins selecting him in Rule 5 in any way?

 

If Kinley succeeds, that could be a more interesting case, but of course whatever credit you want to give the Twins for selecting him would likely be offset by us cutting him. Not to mention, if these cases represent "impressive scouting", then you'd also have to consider it "unimpressive scouting" when we've let guys go, like Bard, Anderson, etc.

This is correct, but only for the next ~45 days. Rule 5 restrictions end at 1 full season or 90 active days, whichever comes last. Assuming he doesn't go on the DL between now and then, Burdi will have accumulated 90 active days by May 25th or so.

 

And in the unlikely event that the Pirates decided to cut him within the next 45 days, as you mention he'd have to clear waivers (with Rule 5 restrictions still attached) before he could be returned to the Twins. With less than 45 days left on his Rule 5 restrictions, I'm guessing he wouldn't clear waivers either.

Let's see how Bard does on his 2nd try with the Angels. Also, Anderson and I pitched in the same college conference. Obviously it was many years apart and I know nothing about him, except I was told he also played basketball, just like I did.

The Twins selected Haley with the requirement that we had to keep him on the 25-man roster for 1 whole season or 90 active days, whichever came last.

 

It's apples and oranges to compare that to the Red Sox rostering him for 18 days then cutting him.

 

If your bar for Rule 5 success is selecting a player who later makes the major leagues for 18 days, then even us fans could have an excellent "success rate" making Rule 5 picks. Once they're already Rule 5 eligible (meaning 4+ years pro), it's not that hard to identify minor leaguers who might get a cup of coffee later. But that's not what the Rule 5 draft is about.

That's Jared Hughes. Phil was released by the Padres last August and has not played anywhere since. 2019 is the last year of his contract, split between the Twins and Padres.

They had a rebirth about 12-15 years ago. Although, it may be waning. Two relatively new locations in Rochester and LaCrosse have recently closed. Although, neither was in an ideal location. I used to be kitchen manager in Winona, but their business has dropped way off in the last 3 years.
