scottz Verified Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Below is a listing of everyone currently on the 40 man roster, sorted by youngest to oldest. Who do you think will be off this list going into 2019? If you are so inclined, feel free to expand on why you think what you do, or even who might take their place. FYI - I have done no research on who must be added (or risk losing). I think the 2019 40 man roster will not include:John CurtissZack GraniteRobbie GrossmanLogan MorrisonLogan ForsytheErvin SantanaMatt Belisle Question marks:*I think Mauer plays one more year for the hometown 9.*It seems like Duffey might go bye bye.*Astudillo might also say goodbye depending on if they have or add another multi-position IF lined up.)*Depending on what they do with the catcher position in the offseason, I could see Castro, Garver and Wilson remaining (if they do nothing). If they sign a FA, Wilson or Castro goes away, depending on health of Castro. If Castro is healthy, he's back. 71 Lewis Thorpe R/L 6'1" 160lbs 11/23/1995 P52 Zack Littell R/R 6'4" 220lbs 10/5/1995 P58 Gabriel Moya L/L 6'0" 175lbs 1/9/1995 P77 Fernando Romero R/R 6'0" 215lbs 12/24/1994 P53 Kohl Stewart R/R 6'3" 195lbs 10/7/1994 P— Stephen Gonsalves L/L 6'5" 213lbs 7/8/1994 P17 Jose Berrios R/R 6'0" 185lbs 5/27/1994 P— Chase De Jong L/R 6'4" 205lbs 12/29/1993 P25 Byron Buxton R/R 6'2" 190lbs 12/18/1993 OF11 Jorge Polanco S/R 5'11" 200lbs 7/5/1993 IF49 Adalberto Mejia R/L 6'3" 195lbs 6/20/1993 (10-day DL) P22 Miguel Sano R/R 6'4" 260lbs 5/11/1993 IF27 1 John Curtiss R/R 6'4" 200lbs 4/5/1993 P26 Max Kepler L/L 6'4" 205lbs 2/10/1993 OF60 Jake Cave L/L 6'0" 200lbs 12/4/1992 OF8 1 Zack Granite L/L 6'1" 175lbs 9/17/1992 OF50 Aaron Slegers R/R 6'10" 245lbs 9/4/1992 (10-day DL) P51 Johnny Field R/R 5'10" 180lbs 2/20/1992 OF64 1 Willians Astudillo R/R 5'9" 225lbs 10/14/1991 IF20 Eddie Rosario L/R 6'1" 180lbs 9/28/1991 OF31 Tyler Austin R/R 6'2" 220lbs 9/6/1991 IF23 Mitch Garver R/R 6'1" 220lbs 1/15/1991 C21 Tyler Duffey R/R 6'3" 220lbs 12/27/1990 P55 Taylor Rogers L/L 6'3" 170lbs 12/17/1990 P39 Trevor Hildenberger R/R 6'2" 211lbs 12/15/1990 P67 Alan Busenitz R/R 6'1" 180lbs 8/22/1990 P12 Jake Odorizzi R/R 6'2" 190lbs 3/27/1990 P68 Matt Magill R/R 6'3" 210lbs 11/10/1989 P65 Trevor May R/R 6'5" 240lbs 9/23/1989 P36 1 Robbie Grossman S/L 6'0" 215lbs 9/16/1989 OF16 Ehire Adrianza S/R 6'1" 170lbs 8/21/1989 IF35 Michael Pineda R/R 6'7" 260lbs 1/18/1989 (60-day DL) P43 Addison Reed L/R 6'4" 230lbs 12/27/1988 P44 Kyle Gibson R/R 6'6" 215lbs 10/23/1987 P99 1 Logan Morrison L/L 6'3" 245lbs 8/25/1987 (7-day DL) IF15 Jason Castro L/R 6'3" 215lbs 6/18/1987 (60-day DL) C24 1 Logan Forsythe R/R 6'1" 205lbs 1/14/1987 IF32 Oliver Drake R/R 6'4" 215lbs 1/13/1987 P7 Joe Mauer L/R 6'5" 225lbs 4/19/1983 IF46 Bobby Wilson R/R 6'0" 230lbs 4/8/1983 C54 1 Ervin Santana R/R 6'2" 175lbs 12/12/1982 (10-day DL) P38 1 Matt Belisle R/R 6'3" 230lbs 6/6/1980 (10-day DL) P
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 I'd probably try to sign a better C than what they have.....it is an area where there are FAs, and they don't have one they love signed for more than 1 more year.....but I'm not sure that changes the numbers/makeup of the 40 man at all, as someone is gone in that scenario. I agree with your list of "won't includes".
minnesquatcha Verified Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 I think it's pretty safe to say that bobby Wilson won't be coming back, and I'm guessing that they'll target a couple of relievers in free agency, which may mean some combination of Magill, Drake, or Slegers or the like will also get taken off.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Aaron Slegers is unlikely to be back IMO. He hasn’t been impressive at the MLB level and he’s been outpitched by at least 4 guys currently at Rochester or above. Romero, Gonsalves, Thorpe, Littel and Mejia. Even without adding anyone, he’s 9th or 10th on the depth chart going in to 2019. Sure, you probably need that many dependable arms. But, I don’t consider Slegers a dependable arm and I suspect his spot on the 40 man will be needed by someone with a considerably brighter future. He’s not even a gimme for Rochester’s rotation.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Concur on the OP's list (with possible exception of Morrison), Bobby Wilson, and I also expect Drake and Field to be off the 40 man.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Good list, I hope there's quite a bit of turnover due to trades and free agents. I'd think Drake and MaGill have an uphill battle to stay rostered. Along with your list, I'd also bet against Johnny Field, Austudillo and Wilson. If they continue to finish the season on down notes I could see them removing Stewart, Slegers and Granite with their fingers crossed that no one claims them and not being upset if someone does. I'd remove De Jong as well but my money is on the front office keeping one of their mid-season pickups. That's a lot of turnover, but I'm just fine with that.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Unless the Twins really get in a pinch for 40 man spots, I think Stewart sticks.

My question is, can we count on Casto being able to continue to catch after knee surgery? I don't think it was terribly significant but he's already past his physical prime as it is. I'd take Ramos or Grandal, but if we're talking about a starting catcher, I'd rather continue with Garver over the rest.

I'd definitely like to see Grandal in a Twins uniform but he'll be 30 in November, so I wouldn't want to sign him to more than 3 years.

Unless he can't come back from injury, I highly doubt they eat that $$$ to pick someone else. At this point have to assume it will be Castro and Garver behind the plate.

Gold glove catcher who could probably help Garver on the defensive end and I doubt he'd cost that much or require more than 2 years **Depending on if Castro is healthy**

To pry him away it would take a contract like Hosmer got and I do not think the Pohlads would go for that much dead money at the end of a contract. Molina might be the only catcher over 30 that catches 60% of their team's games. The Pohlads might go for an overpay contract for Ramos but he has seemed to be injured more than playing

They have other options. Why would anyone think a catcher is getting that long a deal? No way, imo, that happens.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Well, for starters, the Twins will have to find a space from Pineda returning in September. Castro will be back fer sure because of his $8 million in 2019. The Twins may have the option of putting Morrison on the 60-day to end the season. But they also need to make decisions on Belisle and Santana, both of whom will not be back at this point in 2019. Forsythe should also be allowed to be a free agent. Mauer will also be allowed to be a free agent and explore offers, or the Twins to see how little they might have to pay him. There is no reason to 40-man Bobby Wilson in the off-season. So that is six guys going off with four real spots opening up. You only need to keep guys out of the Rule 5 draft if YOU THINK another team will roster then for the season. Pretty much everyone playing today at Chattanooga and below falls into the category of NOT being able to hold a major league roster spot for another team, let alone the Twins...and those that are promising don't need to be protected (Rooker, most of the guys acquired in trades and such). The only candidate would be Brian Navaretto, but he isn't a hitter and is still an AA catcher. But the Twins might JUST protect him if they feel he has any promise of working his way up to the majors. Stewart was already added, and by being added in August means he can be cut from the 40-man anytime if the need would arise (40-man adds before the deadline have to go to spring training, unless traded). So, there is not a lot of MUST HAVE guys. Luke Bard is a consideration, but might be too old to gamble. Jake Reed is a lock. Lamonte Wade should be added. I'm unsure if Nick Gordon really needs to be added thos season. But I still think the Twins NEED to look at him for the month of September to see what they have and what needs work to decide a direction in 2019 (if they retain a free agent). There's fringe guys to consider like Baxendale and Nick Anderson. But, really, the Twins ONLY need 4-6 open 40-man spots. Of course, we get to the interesting need to keep Drake and Grossman and Magill and Duffey. Has their time come and gone? Is Grossman too expensive in arbitration when you have Cave...and maybe Lamonte Wade? Of course, all can be kept depending on cost. You have Slegers and Granite and Astuliddo and Field and De Jong. Ask the question...how many WOULD make the roster of another team. All can stay, as you need players to drop if you make free agent signings. Addison Reed is the next most expensive player on the team with Castro. If he makes it to the end of August, the Twins may be stuck with him. If not, maybe they have another name (and probably a 40-man guy) taking his place on the roster...a 40-man guy who may not be kept by another team/ The big thing is looking at players that need to be protected. No other catchers, really. A lack on infielders on the cusp. The Twins have a lot of rotation arms (10-11) that they would be rostering. We have Thorpe who hasn't been seen this year. Amazing. The bigger question: How many of the 42 names currently on the roster DO have any worth to ANOTHER team and should be considered locks for 2019 (or 2020). Then you see the quality of players you are holding in your hands!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 Add or no....but eligible for rule 5 next year, I believe: Nick Gordon - yesLaMonte Wade - yesLuke Bard - NoJake Reed - No Luis Arriaz - yesJaylin Davis - yesZander Weil - probably yes, but I'd roll the dieTyler Jay - no Lewin Diaz - no I think that's the list of guys even worth discussing (well, Diaz isn't worth discussing, but he was a big signing) hmmmm.....looks like the roster page has not been updated, so it's missing De Jong and probably others that were traded for. Kind of makes the roster page not all that useful, I guess. I'd have De Jong up here as a RP right now, see what that does to his stuff.

Why would anyone think a catcher is getting that long a deal? No way, imo, that happens. The state of catching on many teams. Russel Martin and Brian McCann signed 80 million dollar contracts 5 years ago for 17 or so million a year. No other comparable catchers really have hit the free agent market. Dodgers are in a win now mode. Any of the touted Dodger minor league catchers will not be ready next year. . Ruiz may be considered a sure thing, but so was Buxton. With Barnes having a down year with the bat, the Dodgers really can't afford to lose Grandal.

A bad catcher that has been in your system and knows your pitchers is kind of the devil you know. If they don't go after a FA, and Castro starts healthy, but then gets hurt, you'd rather have Wilson than some other Wilson. But yeah, he can go on the "not" list.
Lonestar Verified Member Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Nick Anderson and Andrew Vasquez will not fly under anyone's radar (besides possibly the Twins) with their K%-BB% (27.6% and 45.0%) and ability to work more than one inning in an appearance.
Tuba Verified Member Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Agree with 3 differences. Forsythe's contract runs out, but I think the Twins will re-sign him if they can and he starts at 2B. There is no one else and if Escobar comes back, he'll be part of the 1B/3B/DH group with Sano, Mauer and Austin. Escobar isn't a good enough fielder to play 2B every day. I also think there's at least a good chance that at least one of Magill and Drake will stay on the 40 man. Yes, if they pitch well the next 6 weeks. Also, I think they'll keep Nick Anderson and De Jong since they just traded for him. I would add three to your list, eliminate the Rule 5 pickup, and say we pick up 3-4 FAs. Other than that, I like it. I agree with a lot of your points. Between Forsythe/Escobar its a little hard to tell who is coming back so I just lumped them into generic FA signings. It was hard to put Drake on the list when he hasn't given up a run yet, but I am leaning on his 4 years of mediocre service time and my ingrained sports pessimism. I know they just traded for De Jong but he strikes me as kind of a throw in for that trade. Nick Anderson is a tough call, but actually on second look Andrew Vasquez is dominating and left handed, seems like an easy thing to stash on a major league roster, we may need to protect him. Surprised he doesn't appear on any prospect lists?

Then I'd want them to go hard after a C and a SP better than Berrios/Gibson. I want Escobar back too. I'd also want Machado, but I don't see it ever happening.
ThejacKmp Provisional Member Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 One year of Castro is infinitely preferable to three years of Grandahl. Castro and Garver are fine and you have Rortvedt a possibility for 2020. I imagine the Twins third catcher will be a guy they don't need to add to the 40 - he only gets added if there's an injury.
Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Tuba's take might be closer to reality than I would expect from the Twins. Falvine want their guys, not leftovers. They've been pretty brutal letting the previous regimes players go so far.
