And they should have traded for Stanton!?

Hey, I wanted Darvish too, but I don't thinking anyone (maybe beyond yourself) believed they should (much less were going to) sign two of Cobb, Lynn, Arrietta, and Darvish.

I still believe they can address one spot in the rotation, but I also hope that Santana's injury doesn't make them overpay for another starter say via trade.

Darvish and Cole would not have required signing two of Cobb, Lynn, Arrieta, and Darvish.

They needed to add two legit starters, in my book.

And Darvish/Cole was doable. Very doable.

I was hoping they were going to actually be players, for a change. I was foolish, I guess.

Well said Chief.

People seem to act like we are asking them to sign every big free agent ever.

All I’m asking for is a teamthat can contend for a World Series every quarter of a century. Seems more than reasonable IMO

Or in an unprecedented market - be aggressive when everyone else is being cautious.  Give Darvish 6 years and 140 and make the move for Cole.

This team would be a legit contender.  Instead we're trying to rationalize Anibal freaking Sanchez.

Thank god it’s not guaranteed. Levelle Neal just tweeted twins aren’t done looking for help.

Thats good, because they still haven't got any.

Sanchez will be a great spring training pitcher. . . for Sano.

I love how people get so worked up about these low risk signings. I remember the anger over signing Colon last year. They still better get another starter. If they do, I have no issue with this.

I misread your post, evidently, mea culpa.  Cole and Darvish were doable, if very hopeful.   The offseason may technically over, but it's clearly not; I'll wait to pass judgment, but I'm certainly not hopeful for much more than another FA starter.

Well, you can start adding up the Payroll for talent that shan't get you to the playoffs. Suddenly you are at $5 million, then throw in Rodney and you're at $10 while languishing at AAA are some possible top-flight relief arms. Next thing you know, they will sign Napoli, making them lose Vargas (or someone). $5, $10, $15 million can get you a dynamite arm instead of filler.

I do.  As I suspect any one of them would be gobbled up by another club.

For Sanchez? I wouldn't trade one of them for him.

I forgot about Tyler Kinley as well. Or Ehire Adrianza. Even Grossman for that matter. Some of those guys might be useful at some point but most of them will not be. Even the ones that are useful are incredibly unlikely to be worth more than a couple WAR. So potentially useful, but nothing one would regret losing.

Well, if you like xFIP, he was about as good as Berrios and Gibson last year ...

Honestly, he might be a bit better with a better OF defense than he was in Detroit. Not sure that'll be enough to fix the rest but he gets strike outs and limits the walks. He gives up too many home runs (that'll be a problem at TF) but Detroit had some truly bad outfields behind him as well. He had something like a .350 babip last year.

Homeruns are defense-proof

Like most posters on this board, this signing feels like a weird one to me. After all the high hopes and trades ideas for an extra arm ... we get this? But, all things considered, I guess it's not such a horrific signing ... if you look at it simply as an insurance policy for the starting rotation to start the season, and/or if you are hoping that the new pitching coach can work some magic with him. Signing him to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training would have been tolerable. I understand that he's not getting a guaranteed contract, but why do we have to sacrifice a spot on the 40-man roster for this guy? Earlier in the decade I might have been excited about signing Sanchez, but now it just feels desperate.

Kinley, yes, the other two, no. The 40-man is currently at 14 position players and 26 hurlers. I can't quite see making it 13-27.

This is such a "yawn, let's take our time, and see what we've got" collection of pitching. When we have a position-player core poised to contend now.

You're right about the ratio.  Good point. Still, there are plenty of pitchers that could come off with little consequence (or none IMO).
