The $2.5MM is actually not guaranteed, per MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger (via Twitter), though Sanchez does receive a 40-man spot.

Thankfully it doesn't look like he's guaranteed a spot on the roster, but $2.5M for Sanchez?!  :banghead:

This had better not be the only move they make for a starting pitcher. Still hoping for one of Cobb/Lynn. I've been defending Falvey/Levine for the past week and they do this? Sanchez's numbers are pretty horrendous the past two seasons and I'd rather have Phil Hughes starting than him. Ugh.

Where's the nauseous smiley when you need it?

40 man roster spot..... Takes up innings.... And makes them think they have more options, meaning they have less need to do something. Plenty of risk.

Exactly. Money isn't the issue. The fact that they signed him isn't really the issue. It's the roster spot.

It doesn't say 25-man roster spot, Mike.  The way the 40-man roster spot thing would work, I'm not clear on, but it indicate he's willing to go to AAA if he needs to.  That the Twins are placing him on the 40 man roster now, doesn't prohibit them from releasing him at any point (esp. considering the salary isn't guaranteed).

He is just taking a spot from a 60 day DL move presumably. That makes no difference, IMO. Who cares about innings in spring training?

I guess I just don't see the big deal here.

If this is their only signing I'll be very upset; but I think this is better than actually having to guarantee someone like Tillman a contract.  I still expect them to sign one of Cobb/Lynn/Arrieta.

Ah. If this is the case, then I agree it isn't a huge deal. But I still don't understand why they'd offer anything more than a minor league deal. If he turns that down, tell him to hit the bricks.

So if they sign an actual pitcher, that dl spot is no longer available.

His ERA and other numbers have been bad for three years. This isn't a guy coming off one fluke bad year.

It's basically a spring invite with a deal in place if he earns his spot. Zero risk.

The money not being guaranteed is an indication even the Twins don’t think much of his chances to help.

Zero risk??

The 2018 season is at risk.

Awful. I have not t been impressed with Falvine, and this is another data point in my opinion, which continues to drop.

Awful.

Sure.  But we all know there would be one or two guys like this brought in.  It's only awful if it precludes them from signing a legitimate starter.

How many times are we going to hear that.

And they needed 2 legit starters.

Say...Darvish and Cole.

Word is that new pitching Guru Garvin Alston has spotted a major flaw with Sanchez' mechanics over the past three seasons.  The belief is that if they can get him to breathe through his eyelids and hold the ball like an egg, all will be cured.

Fingers crossed!

He will announce his presence with authority, that I know.

And they should have traded for Stanton!?

Hey, I wanted Darvish too, but I don't thinking anyone (maybe beyond yourself) believed they should (much less were going to) sign two of Cobb, Lynn, Arrietta, and Darvish.

I still believe they can address one spot in the rotation, but I also hope that Santana's injury doesn't make them overpay for another starter say via trade.

I'm not too worried about the 40 man spot. Pineda can move to the 60 day DL and we have a few arms yet that could be removed without much fuss. Hughes probably ends up back on the DL or some sort of agreement and retires.

Given the apparent paralysis the FO experiences when the time comes to make anything other than minor moves I think we're safe.

I get this, and I get that signing him is basically risk free. I just don't get the point of signing him in the first place.

If Sanchez is taking Pineda's 40-man spot, I am not sure there is another signing coming. The next guy on the 40-man bubble would probably be Rule 5'er Kinley, or Enns or Chargois. I don't see them making those kind of cuts very quickly.

I'd imagine May is eligible for the 60 DL still?

Been confirmed they’re still looking for pitching help.

Yes, I suppose so. May would need to miss the first 60 days of the season, which was possibly the case anyway. He could rehab during that time in the minors, I suppose.

They could DL May or Hughes.  They could make a trade. There are a bunch of players on the 40 man that project as nothing more than replacement level, too.

The 40 man roster isn't going to stop the Twins from signing any legit player. Lynn/Cobb/Arrieta will be signed or not entirely on their own merits.

Have you looked at the 40-man lately? This isn't quite true anymore, virtually all of the spots are probably guys we want to keep around at least a little longer. There are no more Boshers, Turleys, etc. Most of the fringe guys are very recent additions.

Posted

The only way this makes any sense is if it is a reaction to Phil Hughes bullpen, and it went poorly or he feels far away yet, or he was going to hang it up.

This is not risk free if Sanchez is competent in Spring Training against everyone else's backups and reverts to normal at season start and is given 5 starts to work through it.

I’m in the car and can’t look but off the top of my head I have no problems DFAing Enns, Littel, Moya, Jorge, Slegers, Vargas.

I don't think the Twins would agree, at this point. Enns might be the closest, but it sure seems like they would want a longer look at him.

I do.  As I suspect any one of them would be gobbled up by another club.
