h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Worth noting that Correia and Pelfrey met the expectations of their modest contracts -- the problem was the front office was aiming too low. Failing to make even a competitive offer for Darvish would seem to increase the likelihood of that problem reoccurring (with greater negative effects now given the rest of our roster). I thought the expectation was that they would rebound, and get back to their best year performance, not get worse.....
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 That assumes Cobb and Lynn are willing to move much at this point. If Darvish gets 6 years, Cobb and Lynn probably think they could leverage that into 5 year deals for themselves. With a ton of guys still unsigned, there is not much risk for Cobb and Lynn to continue to wait too. Also, the Yankees talk around Darvish is just that, talk. Same for the Dodgers. There is no way those teams can move the Ellsbury or Kemp contracts at this point, and they need to reset the luxury tax penalties before next offseason. Yep Yep and Yep to everything you are saying. I'm sure the Dodgers are trying to move Kemp and I'm sure the Dodgers are telling Yu's agent that they are trying. I can even believe that the Dodgers would appeal to Yu so I can see him waiting just in case. Basically... According to my math... The Dodgers are at the limit because they need some wiggle room in case they want to do somethings at the trade deadline. They would have to clear similar salary to whatever they offer Darvish. Puig by himself won't do it... They need to move Kemp. Or Half of Kemp plus a Puig or Ryu or Grandal or Forsythe. Or 2 of Puig, Ryu, Grandal or Forsythe. Tight free agent market can also signify a tight trade market as well. Very few seem to be in a hurry to add 20 million to their payroll. Will they get it done... maybe... Darvish seems to be heartened enough to wait... must be a reason for waiting or else someone in the Dodgers org is leading his agent on. I'm guessing... Hopefully logically but it sure seems like time is not our friend.
tvagle Verified Member Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 (edited) It ain't over til it's over...or until the Big Japanese dude sings (darn auto-correct) signs! What's lost if the Twins wait for Darvish to decide? Better to wait it out and miss out on him then to bail while there's still a Lloyd Christmas chance at signing him Have to believe that Levine doesn't have some assurances from the Darvish team that they will give the Twins a chance to match/beat his bestest offer...if there was no chance they would have moved on to the next piece who of course won't commit until Darvish does for fear of signing at too big a discount...which Falvine already know what that will be because of the aforementioned assurances with Team Darvish I choose to be the blind optimist and just wait for the February 6th (Super Bowl will be old news) Twins presser introducing the newest Twin... Richie the Rally Goat Community Moderator Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 https://www.fanragsports.com/inside-baseball-mlb-notes-betts-arb-win-could-affect-others/ According to Heyman Dodgers are ambivalent towards resigning Darvish and the Cubs are low bid. Looks like the Twins and Brewers are highest offers but he isn’t getting the bidding war among the big players he was hoping for. Come on Levine! Make it happen

Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Interesting that every team considered in on Darvish isn't considered to be a favorite.. Of course I have no idea what is happening... I can only assume this: Yu wants the Yankees and Dodgers to enter the arena because it may be a preferred location but at the very least... The Yankees and Dodgers getting involved could raise the bar. The Yankees and Dodgers have stayed in contact because they are trying to move money. The Cubs are hoping to appeal with their championship potential but are probably low balling because everything they have done this off-season suggests budget restraint. Yu would have to take a lesser offer to play for the Cubs. The Brewers and Twins are the non-typical FA Players... They would have to be at or near the top of the discussed parameters. Not saying Contract offer but parameters of a comfort level. The Rangers are out according to Jon Daniels. The Phillies are the other team to watch that very few talk about... They could enter. Then again... I could be completely wrong. But Yu is waiting for something or someone it seems.
AZTwin Verified Member Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Conspiracy theory: He has deal in place with the Twins. Just waiting until Feb 13th so the Twins don’t have to take anyone else off 40 man roster
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 They could announce the signing but not make it official until Feb. 13.
